Amazon’s 2026 Kindle Colorsoft has a redesigned, flush-front display and a higher U.S. starting price: $289.99 for the 16 GB model, up $40 from the 2025 16 GB Colorsoft’s announced $249.99 starting price. Amazon says the new display is designed to improve color clarity and uniformity, but no independent measurements establish how much better it looks in practice or whether every reported bezel or “yellow banding” concern is resolved.
What changed on the 2026 Kindle Colorsoft?
Amazon says the 2026 Kindle lineup uses a reverse-stack display construction and a flush front, so the reading surface extends to the edges without a raised border interrupting it. That is the most visible design change for Colorsoft. The company also describes a revised display stack intended to make color look clearer and more uniform. These are Amazon’s design claims, not independently measured results. Amazon’s October 1, 2026 announcement sets out the U.S. lineup and design; Amazon Australia’s announcement provides corroborating technical detail, but its market information applies to Australia and New Zealand.

How Amazon says the display works
For Colorsoft, Amazon says the display uses reverse printing for edge-to-edge color, a light-guide with micro-deflectors intended to reduce stray light and improve uniformity, and an ultra-thin optical coating intended to improve clarity. Amazon also cites an oxide backplane and custom waveforms for speed and contrast. The company has not published an independent before-and-after measurement of color performance or uniformity in the sources available here.
This is a redesign of Colorsoft’s display stack, not the first Kindle color screen. When Amazon introduced the original Colorsoft in 2024, it described an oxide backplane, custom waveforms, and a light-guide with nitride LEDs. The original launch announcement provides that earlier design context.

Did Amazon fix the bezel or yellow-banding problem?
The flush-front design directly addresses the raised-border appearance: Amazon says the 2026 display has no raised border interrupting the surface. But that does not establish that every earlier concern has been fixed. Reports used terms such as “yellow band” and “yellow banding issue”; those descriptions are reader reports, not evidence of how common a problem was. Amazon says its new light-guide design is intended to improve uniformity, but the reviewed announcements do not provide independent testing or prove that all devices will be free of uneven color or lighting.
How much more does the new Kindle Colorsoft cost?
In the U.S., Amazon announced a starting price of $289.99 for the 2026 16 GB Colorsoft and $319.99 for the 2026 32 GB Signature Edition. Amazon’s July 2025 announcement listed the 16 GB Colorsoft at $249.99 and the Signature Edition at $279.99. Comparing like-for-like tiers, each 2026 announced starting price is $40 higher than its 2025 counterpart.

These are the announced U.S. starting prices for the stated year and tier; retail prices and availability can change. The comparison is not between different configurations: the 16 GB price is compared with 16 GB, and Signature Edition with Signature Edition.

The 2026 16 GB Colorsoft starts at $289.99, while the 32 GB Signature Edition starts at $319.99. Amazon lists the Signature Edition’s additional features as aluminum housing, an auto-adjusting front light, double-tap page turns, and pogo-pin dock charging. Amazon does not claim that these features give the Signature Edition a better Colorsoft display than the base model.

The Signature Edition’s announced price premium is $30 over the base model. The practical choice is whether its extra storage and listed hardware features matter to you, rather than expecting a separately specified screen upgrade.

Amazon positions Colorsoft for browsing color book covers and images, and for reading travel guides, comics, and graphic novels. Its 2025 announcement also described color highlights and a page-color feature. Those uses make color a meaningful addition for illustrated reading and for readers who organize or annotate with color. Amazon’s 2025 Colorsoft announcement describes the model’s uses and features.

Those use cases do not mean color e-ink matches a tablet’s brightness or color rendering. For a reader choosing between an e-reader and a tablet, the evidence here supports Colorsoft as a Kindle with color for books and illustrations, not as a substitute for a tablet’s display.
What accessories did Amazon announce?
Amazon announced Kindle Click at $34.99 and says it works with all new Kindle devices and Kindle models from 2024 onward. The $79.99 Page-Turn Cover is for Paperwhite Signature Edition and Colorsoft Signature Edition; the $59.99 Charging Dock is for Signature Editions.
