The right fix depends on whether your other device cannot find the hotspot, rejects its password, connects but has trouble, or cannot use the feature at all.
What iPhone Personal Hotspot does—and does not do
Personal Hotspot lets other devices use the iPhone’s cellular data connection. It does not make the iPhone a Wi-Fi repeater: an iPhone cannot join a Wi-Fi network, such as hotel Wi-Fi, and then share that network through Personal Hotspot. Apple states this limitation in its iPhone User Guide.

There are three ways to connect a device to an iPhone hotspot: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or a USB cable. The best choice depends on the device you are connecting and whether you prefer a wireless or wired setup.
Start by identifying what is going wrong
- The hotspot is missing or Personal Hotspot is unavailable: check cellular data and your carrier plan.
- Another Apple device cannot find or join it: check the Apple Account, Family Sharing, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and proximity requirements.
- A Windows PC or other non-Apple device cannot join over Wi-Fi: check Allow Others to Join, the iPhone’s displayed network name, and its hotspot password.
- The device connects but the connection is unreliable: compare connection methods and try Maximize Compatibility as a troubleshooting test.
Check cellular data and carrier support first
Personal Hotspot uses cellular data, so make sure cellular data is active. If Personal Hotspot is missing from Settings or unavailable, Apple advises contacting your carrier to check whether the feature is included in your plan. Availability, possible additional charges, and the number of devices you can connect depend on your carrier and iPhone model; there is no single limit or price that applies to everyone.

On a dual-SIM iPhone, the hotspot uses the line selected for cellular data. If you have questions about your allowance, tethering fees, or any device limit, check the terms with your carrier rather than assuming they are the same across plans.
Connect another Apple device with Instant Hotspot
Apple devices can use Instant Hotspot when they meet Apple’s account and setup requirements. Devices signed in to the same Apple Account, and Family Sharing members when Family Sharing is configured, can connect without manually entering the hotspot’s Wi-Fi password. Auto-Join may connect an eligible device or prompt it to connect when ordinary Wi-Fi is unavailable.

- Make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on both devices.
- Keep the devices nearby. Apple’s setup guidance gives 30 feet (10 meters) as the proximity requirement; actual wireless conditions can affect whether a connection works.
- Confirm the devices are signed in to the same Apple Account, or that Family Sharing is configured for the family member who needs access.
- On the device that needs internet, choose the iPhone’s hotspot from its Wi-Fi settings if it does not connect or prompt automatically.
A VPN configuration that blocks local networking can interfere with some Continuity features, so it may be relevant if account, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and proximity are all in order.
Connect a Windows PC or other device over Wi-Fi
For a device that cannot use Instant Hotspot, use the regular Wi-Fi join flow. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance recommends keeping the Personal Hotspot settings screen open while the other device starts connecting.

- On the iPhone, open Settings > Personal Hotspot. Depending on your iOS version or settings layout, it may appear under Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot.
- Turn on Allow Others to Join.
- On the joining device, open Wi-Fi settings and select the network whose name matches the iPhone’s device name.
- Enter the Wi-Fi password shown in Personal Hotspot settings. If the password fails, check it on the iPhone rather than relying on an old saved password.
- Leave the Personal Hotspot screen open until the other device has connected.
If the iPhone does not appear, turn Wi-Fi off and back on on the joining device, then look for the network again. Check that Allow Others to Join is enabled and that the device is selecting the iPhone’s current name.

A USB cable is not required for Personal Hotspot, and Apple’s guidance does not establish that buying a cable improves hotspot speed. Use a compatible cable only if you want a wired connection and do not already have one.

Should you turn on Maximize Compatibility?
Try Maximize Compatibility if a device has trouble finding or joining the hotspot. It is a compatibility troubleshooting option, not a general speed setting. Apple warns that internet performance and Wi-Fi security might be reduced for connected devices when it is enabled.
Apple’s Wi-Fi security documentation explains the tradeoff: the setting restricts the hotspot to 2.4 GHz, disables 5 GHz and applicable 6 GHz operation, and enforces WPA2 Personal. If enabling it lets an otherwise incompatible device connect, use it for that purpose; do not assume it will make the connection faster. If you do not need the compatibility change, turn it off again.
Keep an eye on cellular data use
Devices connected to the hotspot use the iPhone’s cellular data. Apple points users to Settings > Cellular to monitor usage. How much data a particular task consumes varies, so there is no universal allowance or usage figure to apply. Apple also says connected devices disconnect automatically when the hotspot is not in use to help save battery.
