Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the Apple TV app will not open, sign in, or play a video, first check whether the problem affects one title, one device, or everything on your network. Then work through these 10 checks, starting with service status and ending with platform-specific troubleshooting. Menu names and available features vary by device.
Start by narrowing down the problem
Try to establish the scope before changing settings:

- One title or event fails: the issue may be limited to that video or its content provider.
- Every title fails on one device: check the app, account, and that device’s connection.
- Playback fails on multiple devices on the same network: investigate the network or contact your internet provider.
- The Apple TV app works elsewhere, but the Apple TV box does not: follow the Apple TV hardware network checks below. The app also runs on many non-Apple devices, so its troubleshooting menus are not the same everywhere.
10 quick fixes to try
1. Check Apple’s service status and the content provider
Look at Apple’s streaming troubleshooting guidance for the System Status check, and check the third-party provider’s website if the video is from a channel or provider. If a relevant service is interrupted, wait and try again later; changing your device settings will not resolve a service outage.
2. Confirm that you are signed in to the right Apple Account
If the app reports a sign-in problem, verify the Apple Account shown in the app and complete any sign-in or verification prompts. If you cannot access the account, use Apple’s account recovery or two-factor sign-in help linked from its streaming support page.

3. Try another title
Play a different show or movie. If that works, the problem is more likely confined to the original title, event, or provider than to playback across the app. Retry the original title after each relevant fix.
4. Check the connection you are using
If cellular service is weak, switch to Wi-Fi and try again. Apple says, “Streaming HD content requires 8 Mbit/s or faster.” That is Apple’s stated threshold for HD streaming, not a guarantee against buffering: congestion or an unstable connection can still interrupt playback.
5. Test another device on the same network
Open the Apple TV app on another device connected to the same Wi-Fi and try playback. If it fails there too, Apple’s guidance points to a network or internet-provider issue rather than a fault isolated to the first device. Test another title as well, if possible, to separate a network-wide problem from a single-video issue.

6. Check whether other viewers are using the subscription
If other people are watching through an Apple TV subscription or Apple TV channel, check whether the applicable simultaneous-stream limit has been reached. Limits depend on the relevant subscription or channel terms; there is no single number to assume for every viewer.
7. Temporarily reduce network activity
Ask others on the connection to pause bandwidth-heavy activities, such as large downloads or other video streams, while you test playback again. This can help identify congestion without changing account or device settings.
8. Restart the affected device
Restart the iPhone, iPad, Mac, PC, television, streaming player, or console running the app, as appropriate. For a smart TV or streaming device, a full power cycle may help: turn it off, disconnect power briefly, reconnect it, then reopen the app. Instructions differ by manufacturer.

9. Update the app and the device software
Apple’s update path depends on the platform. Use the route that matches the device:
- iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV box: install available device software updates; the Apple TV app is updated through the Apple platform’s software-update process.
- Windows PC: update Windows and relevant drivers, then check for an Apple TV app update in Microsoft Store.
- Android device: update Android, then check Google Play for an app update.
- Compatible connected TV, streaming device, or console: the app should update automatically where supported. Check the device maker’s update settings if it appears outdated.
Apple’s streaming troubleshooting guidance lists these platform-specific update steps.
10. Use the app’s video tools, or troubleshoot an Apple TV box separately
On supported smart TVs, streaming devices, game consoles, and some cable or satellite services, look in the Apple TV app for Settings > Video Troubleshooting. Availability varies by platform, and not all features or content are available in every region or on every device. Apple’s video troubleshooting guide describes the option.

If the app on a supported television remains unresponsive, resetting it may help. Do not reset casually: Apple says reset removes account and configuration information, as well as personal information and downloaded shows or movies from the smart TV. See Apple’s Apple TV app reset instructions before proceeding.
If the device is an Apple TV box with Wi-Fi trouble
These checks apply to Apple TV hardware, not to every device that runs the Apple TV app. Apple’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide recommends checking that the router and modem are on, and placing the Apple TV and router in the same room if possible. Keep the Apple TV at least 30 cm from the router, with few obstructions and away from metal surfaces.

- Check for an Apple TV software update at Settings > System > Software Updates.
- If the model has an Ethernet port, connect it to the router with an Ethernet cable and test playback over the wired connection. Not every Apple TV model has an Ethernet port.
When to contact support
If a purchased video still will not play after the relevant checks, Apple’s streaming support page directs users to its report-a-problem route. For an app made by another App Store developer, contact that developer. If playback also fails on other devices over the same network, ask your internet provider to help diagnose the connection.
