Microsoft is the provisional winner on the cleanest single operating test: Azure and other cloud services grew 40% year over year in Microsoft fiscal Q3 2026, versus 37% growth for Amazon Web Services (AWS) in Amazon Q2 2026. That gives Microsoft the edge for investors prioritizing current cloud-demand momentum, but it is a directional comparison rather than a perfectly synchronized quarterly contest. Amazon still offers exceptional AWS profitability, custom-chip exposure and accelerating AI demand, while its heavy infrastructure spending and negative trailing free cash flow raise a different set of risks.
The one-metric verdict
Year-over-year cloud revenue growth is the most useful single metric for comparing these companies because both disclose it clearly and it captures customer demand plus the ability to turn that demand into sales. On the latest reported figures, Azure grew faster than AWS:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Cloud platform | Latest reported period | Year-over-year growth | Period end |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Azure and other cloud services | Microsoft fiscal Q3 2026 | 40% | March 31, 2026 |
| Amazon Web Services | Amazon Q2 2026 | 37% | June 30, 2026 |
Because the fiscal periods end three months apart, the percentages should not be treated as a same-quarter statistical test. They are the latest company-reported snapshots available for each platform. Even with that timing limitation, Microsoft has the stronger reported growth rate, so it is the provisional choice on this one-metric test.

Cloud revenue growth is broader and more observable than an alleged AI-only profit number. Generative-AI workloads are delivered through cloud computing, databases, developer tools, security, applications and support. A platform can therefore monetize AI without labeling every dollar as AI revenue. Comparing total cloud growth captures that ecosystem demand while avoiding a made-up margin or revenue allocation.

Year-over-year measurement also removes most seasonality. A 40% increase means the latest quarter’s Azure and other cloud-services revenue was 40% above the corresponding quarter a year earlier; 37% for AWS has the same basic interpretation. The metric says customers are spending more and the provider is converting usage into reported sales. It does not, by itself, reveal how much of the increase came from AI, price changes, acquisitions, currency movements or non-AI workloads.
What the metric can tell you
- Which platform is currently adding reported cloud revenue faster.
- Whether demand momentum is accelerating or decelerating when you track the same disclosure over successive quarters.
- How quickly a provider is expanding the revenue base that can eventually support AI-related margins and cash generation.
What it cannot tell you
- Whether Azure or AWS will produce the higher total shareholder return.
- Which company has the higher AI profit, because neither cited release provides a fully comparable AI-only income statement.
- Whether the current growth gap will persist after the companies report synchronized future periods.
Azure versus AWS: the latest operating comparison
Microsoft reported that Azure and other cloud services revenue increased 40% year over year in fiscal Q3 2026. Amazon reported that AWS sales increased 37% year over year in Q2 2026, describing it as AWS’s fastest growth in 18 quarters. The three-percentage-point difference is meaningful, but it is not large enough to erase the need for several quarters of confirmation.
The Amazon figure is also reported as 36.7% in management commentary, which rounds to 37% in the headline comparison. Andy Jassy, Amazon’s president and chief executive officer, said AWS was “booming” at 36.7% year-over-year growth in Q2 and called it the fastest pace in 18 quarters. Microsoft has not presented the Azure figure as an AI-only growth rate; it covers Azure and other cloud services.

How an investor should read the gap
- Credit Microsoft for the current lead. A 40% increase is higher than 37% on the disclosed figures, so Azure has the better present growth momentum.
- Keep the lead in perspective. The quarters ended March 31 and June 30, 2026, so macro conditions and customer purchasing patterns were not identical.
- Look for persistence. The more useful signal will be whether Azure remains ahead, whether AWS closes the gap, or whether both rates change as AI capacity constraints ease.
AI monetization: large numbers, different definitions
Both companies report a fast-growing AI business, but the disclosures are not equivalent accounting categories. Microsoft said its AI business reached a $37 billion annual revenue run rate, up 123% year over year. Amazon said AWS’s AI business exceeded a $25 billion annual revenue run rate and was growing at triple-digit percentages year over year.
| Disclosure | Reported figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft AI business | $37 billion annual revenue run rate; 123% year-over-year growth | Management’s broader AI-business definition; not an audited quarterly segment |
| Amazon AWS AI business | More than $25 billion annual revenue run rate; triple-digit year-over-year growth | Management’s AWS AI scope; “more than” $25 billion is not a precise point estimate |
A run rate annualizes a recent revenue pace; it is not the same as revenue recognized over the past four quarters. The two companies may include different products, consumption patterns and services in their AI definitions. The figures therefore show that AI is becoming material at both platforms, not that Microsoft’s $37 billion is directly comparable with Amazon’s amount above $25 billion.
Microsoft’s Satya Nadella said the AI business had surpassed a $37 billion annual revenue run rate and was up 123% year over year. Amazon’s disclosure that AWS AI exceeded a $25 billion run rate and was growing at triple-digit rates indicates strong acceleration from a smaller stated base. The growth percentages cannot be ranked cleanly because the underlying scopes and starting points differ.

Profitability: AWS supplies a disclosed benchmark
Amazon reported Q2 2026 AWS sales of $42.2 billion and AWS operating income of $16.6 billion. Dividing operating income by sales gives an operating margin of approximately 39.3% ($16.6 billion ÷ $42.2 billion). That calculation uses Amazon’s reported segment figures and is a useful measure of AWS’s operating economics for that quarter.
Microsoft’s cited releases do not provide an Azure-only operating margin. Microsoft reports Microsoft Cloud revenue and company-level or broader segment information, but an Azure-specific margin cannot be derived without allocating shared datacenter, sales, research and corporate costs. Do not treat Microsoft’s lack of a disclosed Azure margin as proof that it is less profitable; it means the two companies do not offer a like-for-like margin disclosure.
Why the AWS margin matters
- A roughly 39.3% quarterly operating margin shows that AWS can convert a large revenue base into substantial operating income even while funding expansion.
- High margins create room to lower prices, add capacity or invest in custom silicon while remaining profitable.
- Margins can move with utilization, depreciation, energy costs, chip mix and the timing of new datacenter investment, so one quarter is not a permanent ceiling.
Investment intensity and cash flow
Amazon’s growth comes with a major capital commitment. Its trailing-twelve-month free cash flow was negative $7.6 billion after property-and-equipment purchases increased by $66.1 billion year over year, primarily reflecting AI investment. Negative free cash flow does not mean AWS is losing money: AWS produced $16.6 billion of operating income in Q2 2026. It means cash consumed by infrastructure purchases exceeded the cash generated after those investments over the trailing period.

For an investor, the key question is whether new GPUs, networking equipment, chips and datacenters earn attractive returns over their useful lives. AI capacity can be sold through model training, inference, storage and related services, but demand forecasts can change quickly. Amazon’s high AWS margin is a strength; the negative cash-flow figure is a reminder that reported operating profit and cash available to shareholders are different measures.
Microsoft is also investing heavily in AI infrastructure, but the cited disclosures do not provide an Azure-only free-cash-flow figure or a directly comparable Azure capital-spending amount. Avoid inferring a Microsoft advantage or disadvantage from Amazon’s cash-flow number alone.

| Cloud revenue disclosed in a latest cited quarter | Microsoft Cloud revenue of $59.3 billion in fiscal Q4 2026, up 27% year over year | AWS sales of $42.2 billion in Q2 2026 |
| Annual platform milestone | Azure revenue surpassed $100 billion for the first time in 2026 | AWS reached a $169 billion annualized revenue run rate in Q2 2026 |
| AI run-rate disclosure | $37 billion, up 123% year over year | More than $25 billion, growing at triple-digit percentages |
The Microsoft Cloud figure is a broader aggregate than Azure alone, while the $59.3 billion value comes from fiscal Q4 2026 and the 40% Azure growth rate comes from fiscal Q3. AWS’s $169 billion figure is an annualized run rate based on its Q2 pace, not a reported full-year revenue total. These distinctions matter when comparing scale.

Nadella said Azure revenue surpassed $100 billion for the first time and that Microsoft 365 Copilot had more than 30 million paid seats. Copilot seats are an application adoption indicator, not Azure revenue, but they show how Microsoft can distribute AI through an installed productivity base as well as through cloud infrastructure.

If your priority is the fastest current cloud growth
Microsoft has the stronger evidence on the selected metric: 40% Azure growth versus 37% AWS growth. An investor choosing strictly on the latest year-over-year cloud rate would put Microsoft first, while recognizing that the periods are not synchronized and that a single quarter can reverse.
If your priority is disclosed cloud profitability
Amazon offers the clearer data point. AWS’s approximately 39.3% Q2 operating margin demonstrates substantial segment profitability. Microsoft may be highly profitable at the company level, but the cited releases do not isolate Azure’s margin, so a precise platform-to-platform ranking is unavailable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf your priority is AI demand acceleration
Both companies qualify. Microsoft’s AI run rate is $37 billion with 123% year-over-year growth; Amazon’s AWS AI run rate is above $25 billion with triple-digit growth. The definitions differ, so use these figures as evidence of scale and momentum within each company, not as a direct market-share table.
If your priority is near-term free-cash-flow resilience
Amazon’s negative $7.6 billion trailing free cash flow and $66.1 billion year-over-year increase in property-and-equipment purchases make capital intensity a central issue. The available figures do not establish Microsoft’s Azure free-cash-flow profile, so investors should consult each company’s consolidated cash-flow statement rather than assume one platform wins.
A practical framework for tracking the comparison
- Record the exact quarter-end dates. Put Azure and AWS growth rates beside their fiscal period ends before comparing them.
- Track the same metric each quarter. Use reported year-over-year Azure and other cloud-services growth for Microsoft and AWS sales growth for Amazon.
- Separate revenue from run rate. Keep the $37 billion and above-$25 billion AI run-rate disclosures in a separate column from recognized quarterly revenue.
- Check profitability disclosures. Record AWS operating income and sales, and mark Azure margin as “not disclosed” unless Microsoft provides an explicit figure.
- Follow infrastructure spending and cash flow. Compare capital expenditures, depreciation and free cash flow over a trailing period, rather than treating one investment quarter as a trend.
- Require persistence before changing a long-term view. A one-quarter lead identifies current momentum; several periods are needed to judge whether it reflects durable competitive advantage.
Risks that could overturn the provisional ranking
- Timing mismatch: Different quarter ends can make growth rates look closer or farther apart than they would in a synchronized period.
- Capacity constraints: If either provider cannot obtain advanced chips or datacenter power, reported demand may understate customer intent.
- Pricing and mix: Revenue growth can reflect price, product mix or currency, not just additional AI workload volume.
- Run-rate ambiguity: Management-defined AI run rates are not standardized financial segments and may change scope.
- Capital-return risk: Amazon’s large infrastructure purchases must earn returns; negative trailing free cash flow can persist if spending outruns monetization.
- Non-operating income: Amazon’s Q2 2026 net income included $53.4 billion of pre-tax other income, primarily from Anthropic investments. That item is not AWS operating performance and should be excluded when evaluating operating AI economics.
- Valuation: A faster-growing cloud platform can still be a poor stock purchase if its share price already discounts exceptional future growth. The operating comparison does not forecast total shareholder return.
Bottom line for the one-metric test
Microsoft comes out ahead because Azure and other cloud services grew 40% year over year in fiscal Q3 2026, versus 37% AWS growth in Amazon Q2 2026. Treat that result as a provisional operating lead, not a synchronized contest or a complete stock recommendation. Amazon remains compelling for investors who value AWS’s approximately 39.3% reported operating margin, custom silicon and rapidly expanding AI demand. Its negative $7.6 billion trailing free cash flow and $66.1 billion increase in property-and-equipment purchases make execution and return on invested capital essential follow-up tests. The best ongoing process is to keep measuring cloud growth, platform profitability, AI monetization and cash generation separately rather than forcing them into one headline score.
