Amazon stores far more than your order list. Its current Privacy Notice, updated June 30, 2026, describes information you provide, data collected automatically from your devices and activity, and information obtained from carriers, merchants, subsidiaries, advertisers, Alexa-linked devices and credit bureaus. You can review many categories of account, order, payment, content and Alexa information. Amazon does not publish one universal retention period: how long data remains depends on its purpose, the system handling it and legal requirements. Deleting Alexa history is narrower than closing your account, while account closure is permanent and can leave some records—such as order history required for tax, accounting or fraud prevention—in Amazon’s systems.
What data does Amazon save about you?
Amazon describes collection in three broad groups: information customers provide, information collected automatically, and information received from other sources. The examples below come from Amazon’s Privacy Notice, last updated June 30, 2026.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Information you provide
When you create and use an account, place orders, contact support or interact with Amazon services, you may provide:
Recommended Free Tools
- Your name, postal addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses and other contact details.
- Payment information and payment-account settings.
- Age, location and IP address.
- Contacts, reviews, emails and other communications.
- Profile photographs and other profile content.
- Alexa voice recordings, images and videos.
- Identity documents, corporate information, financial information and credit history where a service requires them.
- Purchase history, content-use history, searches, reminders, lists, messages and other material you create or submit.
- Customer-service telephone calls and information supplied during support interactions.
- Images or video captured in stores or other Amazon-operated environments where applicable.
Some of these fields are optional or appear only when you use a particular product. For example, Alexa voice recordings require an Alexa interaction, while identity or financial documents may be collected only for a specific verification or financial service.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
The category also includes information you intentionally upload or write. A product review, an Amazon Photos image, a shopping-list entry, a reminder, a message or an email to support can all become part of the account’s content history. If several people use one account, their activity may be represented in the same account records, so check shared use before exporting or closing the account.
Information collected automatically
Amazon says it automatically records technical and usage information when you browse or use its services. Examples include cookies and related technologies, device identifiers, device and time-zone settings, IP address, URL clickstream, browsing activity, product searches, viewed pages, purchase and content-use activity, and interactions with apps or connected devices. This information can help Amazon deliver pages, remember settings, operate security controls, personalize recommendations and measure service use.
Automatic collection is not limited to a desktop browser. A phone, tablet, streaming device, Alexa-enabled Echo speaker or another connected product can generate device and interaction information. The exact fields depend on the product, settings and features you use.
That means a privacy review should include devices as well as the website. A browser visit can create clickstream and cookie records; an Echo interaction can create a recording, transcript and an action record; and a connected app can contribute device or content-use information. Deleting one visible item does not necessarily remove every event generated around it.
Information from other sources
Amazon also says it receives information from outside organizations and services. Its examples include:
- Updated delivery or address information from carriers.
- Merchant account and page-view information.
- Interactions with Amazon subsidiaries.
- Advertising interactions.
- Information from Alexa-linked devices.
- Credit-history information used for fraud prevention and certain financial services.
Information from another company is not necessarily stored in the same place or under the same retention rules as information in your Amazon account. That distinction matters when you request deletion. For example, a carrier may supply an updated address, while a linked device or subsidiary may maintain its own operational record. An Amazon account control cannot automatically erase a copy held by that separate organization.
Can you see what Amazon knows about you?
Amazon’s Privacy Notice says customers can access several categories of account data. The available material specifically identifies:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Recent orders and complete order history.
- Personally identifiable account information and account identifiers.
- Payment settings and notification settings.
- Recommendations and recently viewed products.
- Lists and registries.
- Content and device settings.
- Alexa voice recordings.
- Profile material such as reviews and reminders.
What you see in an account page is a user-facing view, not necessarily every internal copy, security record, derived profile or backup. Amazon’s notice explains the categories customers can access; it does not promise that every internal data element appears in one download or screen.
Use the visible categories as a review checklist. Look at orders and invoices before closure, check payment and notification settings, inspect lists and registries, and review recently viewed products and recommendations if you are concerned about personalization. Profile material, reviews and reminders can be easy to overlook because they are not part of the order list.

For Alexa, Amazon identifies a direct review location: in the Alexa app, open More > Alexa Privacy. Echo Show devices provide Alexa privacy controls as well, and Amazon also provides an Alexa privacy-settings page. Those controls can show recordings, transcripts and typed requests associated with Alexa interactions.
How long does Amazon keep your data?
There is no verified, universal number of days or years for all Amazon data. The official material describes retention according to the purpose for which information is used, the operation of the relevant system and applicable law. A payment setting, an order record, an Alexa transcript and a fraud-prevention record can therefore have different lifecycles.
The Tool Desk

Retention is not presented as a single account-wide timer. Information needed to provide a service can follow one process, while a record needed for accounting, fraud prevention or another legal obligation can follow another. System architecture matters too: a customer-facing history, an operational database and a de-identified analytical copy may not be processed at the same moment.
This is why an item disappearing from a history view should not be read as proof that every related record vanished instantly. Conversely, a retained legal record does not mean the account remains usable after closure. Access and retention are separate questions.
Order history and invoices
Closing an account removes your access to order history and invoices, but Amazon says it may retain information such as order history when required for tax, accounting or fraud-prevention purposes. Account closure is not a guarantee that every legally required record disappears immediately.
Save invoices before closing if you might need them for a warranty, return, tax filing or proof of purchase. Once the account is closed, you cannot rely on signing in later to retrieve a document that you forgot to download.
Alexa recordings and requests
Alexa deletion timing varies by the type of information requested and by Amazon’s internal systems. Amazon says deletion can continue processing for some time; it does not publish one fixed timetable that applies to every recording, transcript or typed request.
The selected recording, transcript or typed request may leave the Alexa history view first, while related action records or information in another system follow a different process. Treat the control as a deletion request for specified Alexa items, not as a real-time purge of every connected record.
Do not confuse the five-day period with retention
When you submit an account-closure request, Amazon requires you to confirm the notification within five days. That is a confirmation deadline for the closure request, not a promise that Amazon retains or deletes data for five days.

What happens when you delete Alexa history?
Amazon states that deleting Alexa voice recordings, text transcripts and typed requests associated with a chat starts secure deletion of those items from Amazon’s cloud. The scope is limited to the items covered by the request; it is not the same as deleting your Amazon account.

How to review and delete Alexa interactions
- Open the Alexa app or use an Echo Show device’s Alexa privacy controls.
- In the Alexa app, select More > Alexa Privacy.
- Review the recordings, transcripts and typed requests shown for your account.
- Choose the interaction or history range you want to remove and use the available delete control.
- For broader account-level controls, use Amazon’s Alexa privacy-settings page while signed in.
Labels and available ranges can change as Amazon updates the app or device software. The important distinction is that the control targets Alexa interaction records, not every record generated by the conversation or by another service.
What Alexa deletion covers
Amazon’s statement specifically covers voice recordings, text transcripts and typed requests associated with a chat. Those items are marked for secure deletion from Amazon’s cloud when you use the deletion control.
What may remain
The same Alexa FAQ identifies related information that may remain, including:
- Attachments.
- Information you provided through interactions.
- Records of actions Alexa took.
- Product searches.
- Reminders, timers and alarms.
- Orders, preferences, shopping lists, tasks and messages.
- Data collected by third parties.
- Data stored outside Amazon’s cloud.
- De-identified data.
Deletion can also take time while Amazon’s systems process the request. A removed recording may therefore disappear from the customer-facing history before every related system has finished processing it. De-identified information may no longer be reasonably linked to you and may not be removed through the same control.

Removing the audio alone does not undo the order, preference or task that Alexa carried out.
| Deletion target | What Amazon says happens | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Alexa voice recordings | Secure deletion from Amazon’s cloud begins when you delete them. | Processing can take time; related records, third-party data, outside-cloud data and de-identified copies may remain. |
| Alexa text transcripts | Secure deletion from Amazon’s cloud begins for the selected interaction. | The deletion request does not automatically erase every action or record generated by the interaction. |
| Alexa typed requests | Secure deletion from Amazon’s cloud begins for typed requests associated with a chat. | The same third-party, outside-cloud and de-identification limits apply. |
| Whole Amazon account | Account access and associated account content are permanently closed. | Amazon may retain information required for tax, accounting, fraud prevention or other legal purposes. |
How to delete your Amazon account and personal information
Account closure is the broadest option, but it is also irreversible. Amazon says a closed account can no longer be accessed or restored. The closure affects order history, invoices, linked services, devices and other content associated with the credentials, including linked sites that use the same sign-in.
Before you submit the request
- Download Amazon Photos or other uploaded content you want to keep.
- Save invoices needed for warranties, returns, tax records or proof of purchase.
- Check whether Alexa devices, subscriptions, apps, digital content or other services use the account.
- Make sure you are signed in to the account you actually intend to close; closure applies to that account and its linked services.
Also check for household consequences. A shared Echo, a subscription used by another person or a device registered under the same credentials may stop working for everyone after closure. If you need a record of settings, lists, reminders or digital purchases, preserve it before submitting the request because a new account will not restore the old account’s content.
Account-closure steps
- Open Amazon’s official account-closure and personal-information-deletion page and sign in.
- Review the products and services associated with the account. This is the point to identify content or devices that will lose access.
- Select the confirmation for permanent closure and deletion.
- Choose a reason for closing the account.
- Submit Close my Account.
- Within five days, confirm the email or text notification Amazon sends. Without that confirmation, the request may not complete.
After confirmation, treat the account as permanently closed. Amazon says it cannot be restored, so opening a new account later would not recover the old order history, invoices, digital content or settings.

What closure does not guarantee
Account closure removes your access to the account and its associated content, but it does not override every legal or technical exception. Amazon may keep records such as order history when tax, accounting or fraud-prevention obligations require it. Information held by a third party, stored outside Amazon’s cloud or converted into de-identified form can also fall outside a direct account-deletion operation.
Alexa deletion or full account closure?
Choose the narrowest option that solves your privacy problem. Deleting Alexa history is appropriate when you want to remove voice or text interactions while continuing to use orders, digital content and connected devices. Closing the account is appropriate only when you are ready to give up access to the entire account and have saved everything you may need.
| Consideration | Delete Alexa history | Close Amazon account |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Selected Alexa recordings, transcripts and typed requests. | Whole account, order history access, invoices, linked services, devices and other account content. |
| Reversibility | Removes selected history; your account remains usable. | Permanent; Amazon says the closed account cannot be restored. |
| Timing | Processing time varies by data type and internal system operation. | Closure requires notification confirmation within five days; deletion and legal retention are separate issues. |
| Exceptions | Related actions, attachments, third-party data, outside-cloud data and de-identified information may remain. | Legally required records, including some order history, may be retained. |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming “delete” means every copy disappears instantly
Amazon’s Alexa explanation distinguishes the selected cloud items from related records and other data locations. Allow for processing time and remember that third-party or de-identified data may not be covered.
Closing an account before saving invoices
Once closure is confirmed, you lose access to invoices and order history. Download warranty, return, tax and proof-of-purchase documents first.
Treating account closure as a five-day deletion promise
The five-day figure is the window to confirm the closure notification. It is not a universal retention period and does not describe how long every record takes to disappear.
Deleting recordings but overlooking Alexa-generated records
Product searches, reminders, timers, alarms, orders, preferences, shopping lists, tasks, messages, attachments and records of actions Alexa took can be separate from the voice recording or transcript. Review those categories if your goal is to remove the full context of an interaction.
Forgetting linked services and devices
Account closure affects linked services, devices and sites that use the same credentials. Check every associated product before submitting the request, especially if another household member relies on the account.
Assuming an account page is a complete internal inventory
The categories Amazon lets customers view are useful, but they are not a promise that every backup, security record or derived profile appears on one screen. Use the available pages to understand and manage your account, while recognizing that operational and legally retained records may follow separate processes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA practical privacy-maintenance routine
- Periodically open the Alexa privacy controls and review recordings, transcripts and typed requests.
- Delete Alexa interactions you no longer need rather than waiting until you are considering full account closure.
- Review orders, payment settings, recommendations, recently viewed products, lists, registries, content settings and profile material from the account areas Amazon makes available.
- Keep copies of invoices and important digital content outside the account if you may need them later.
- When selling, recycling or giving away an Alexa-enabled device, remove it from the account and review the device’s stored settings before transfer.
- If you decide to close the account, complete the download and linked-service checklist before submitting the permanent request.
A useful review question is, “What exactly am I trying to remove?” If the answer is a single conversation, Alexa controls are the narrower tool. If it is access to the entire account, plan for permanent closure and its consequences. If the information came from a carrier, merchant, subsidiary, advertiser or third-party device, you may need to consider that organization’s records separately.

The central choice is scope. Alexa controls address specific interaction records; account closure ends access to the entire Amazon account. Neither option should be described as a guarantee that every legally retained, third-party, outside-cloud or de-identified record is erased.
Frequently Asked Questions
What data does Amazon save about me?
Amazon says it collects information you provide, information collected automatically, and information from other sources. Examples include identity and contact details, payment information, age, location, IP address, contacts, reviews, emails, profile photographs, voice recordings, images, videos, purchase and content-use history, searches, cookies, device identifiers, clickstream data, and information from carriers, merchants, subsidiaries, advertisers, Alexa-linked devices and credit bureaus.
How long does Amazon keep my order history?
Amazon does not publish one universal retention period. Its account-closure guidance says information such as order history may be retained when needed for tax, accounting or fraud-prevention purposes. Closing the account removes your access, but it does not guarantee that every legally required record is immediately erased.
How long does Amazon keep Alexa recordings?
Amazon says Alexa deletion timing varies by the type of information and the operation of its internal systems. There is no verified, universal number of days that applies to every recording, transcript or typed request. Deletion can continue processing after you use the control.
Can I see what Amazon knows about me?
Amazon identifies customer access to recent and complete orders, account identifiers, payment and notification settings, recommendations, recently viewed products, lists and registries, content and device settings, Alexa recordings, and profile material such as reviews and reminders. This user-facing view may not include every internal copy, security record or derived profile.
Does deleting Alexa history delete everything?
No. Amazon says deleting voice recordings, text transcripts and typed requests associated with a chat starts secure deletion of those items from Amazon’s cloud. Attachments, information supplied during interactions, records of Alexa’s actions, searches, reminders, timers, alarms, orders, preferences, lists, tasks, messages, third-party data, outside-cloud data and de-identified information may remain.
Where do I delete Alexa recordings and transcripts?
In the Alexa app, open More > Alexa Privacy, review the available recordings, transcripts and typed requests, and use the delete control. Echo Show devices and Amazon’s Alexa privacy-settings page provide additional access. The exact labels and history ranges can change with app or device updates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs deleting Alexa history the same as closing my Amazon account?
No. Alexa deletion targets selected interaction records while leaving the account usable. Account closure permanently removes access to order history, invoices, linked services, devices and other account content. Amazon says a closed account cannot be restored, and some records may still be retained for legal, accounting or fraud-prevention reasons.
What should I save before closing my Amazon account?
Download Amazon Photos and other uploaded content, and save invoices needed for warranties, returns, taxes or proof of purchase. Review subscriptions, apps, digital content, Alexa devices and other linked services. After closure, you cannot sign in to recover the old account’s order history, invoices or settings.
How do I confirm an Amazon account-closure request?
Submit the request while signed in through Amazon’s official account-closure and personal-information-deletion page. Review the associated products and services, select permanent closure and deletion, choose a reason, and submit Close my Account. Confirm the email or text notification within five days; that deadline is not a retention period.
Can Amazon restore a closed account?
Amazon says account closure is permanent: once the account is closed, it is no longer accessible and cannot be restored. Creating a new account later will not recover the old account’s orders, invoices, digital content, devices or settings.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Amazon collects account, purchase, browsing, device and Alexa information, but it does not publish one retention schedule for everything. Review the data categories Amazon makes available, delete Alexa recordings or requests when you need to remove specific interactions, and save invoices and content before any account closure. Alexa deletion is limited and can take time; closing an account is permanent, affects linked services and devices, and may still leave records retained for legal, accounting, fraud-prevention, third-party, outside-cloud or de-identification reasons.
