Amazon says you can play with its own controller, a compatible gaming controller, or a computer’s keyboard and mouse. Buy the Luna Controller if you mainly play Luna and want its Cloud Direct connection. Use a compatible Bluetooth controller if you already own one or want a pad that works with other devices. This advice follows Amazon’s documented connection options. It is not based on hands-on testing.

What Cloud Direct actually gives you
Cloud Direct is the real difference. Amazon’s help page says the connection “reduces latency on Fire TV, Fire Tablets, PC, Mac, Chromebook, iPad, iPhone, and select Android phones.” The Luna Controller sends input over Wi-Fi straight to the cloud servers. A Bluetooth pad sends input to your device first, and the device then relays it.

Amazon’s sources give no measured comparison or millisecond figure against Bluetooth. Treat the benefit as a qualitative claim limited to the listed devices. Don’t assume a specific number.

Amazon’s controller help also says it’s possible to play Luna with an Amazon Luna controller, a compatible gaming controller, or a computer’s keyboard and mouse. The same help area documents a Cloud Direct route for compatible third-party controllers via the Luna Controller app. So the official pad isn’t the only way to get that mode.

When to choose the Luna Controller
- Luna is your main reason for buying a controller.
- You want the connection mode Amazon built and optimized for cloud gaming. Amazon’s overview lists it at $69.99, designed by Amazon and optimized specifically for cloud gaming. That price is time-sensitive, so check the live product page.
- You don’t own a gamepad that’s confirmed to work with Luna.
The official pad also covers Bluetooth and USB-C, so it isn’t Luna-only. Its model number is T28B69, per Amazon’s safety and compliance page. Use that number to confirm you have the right product.
When a Bluetooth controller is the better pick
- You already own a controller. Amazon names Xbox and PlayStation 4 and 5 controllers among alternatives, though support depends on your device and setup.
- You want one pad for Luna and for other compatible devices and services.
- You’d rather spend nothing. Keyboard and mouse work on a computer. The Luna Phone Controller app gives touch controls, and Amazon says some GameNight games need no separate controller.
Before you buy a third-party pad for Luna, check that exact model against Amazon’s controller list for your device. Don’t rely on the word “Bluetooth” alone.

Setup notes for each route
Pairing the Luna Controller over Bluetooth
- Confirm your device supports Bluetooth 5.0, as Amazon’s pairing instructions require.
- Hold the Action and B buttons for about three seconds, until the white light pulses.
- Select the controller in your device’s Bluetooth settings.
- On Windows, install Amazon’s Luna Controller driver first. Bluetooth play on PC requires it.
Reading the lights
Per Amazon’s indicator guide, a pulsing white light means pairing or discovery mode. A solid purple circle means the controller is connected to Wi-Fi and Luna hasn’t launched. A solid purple circle over USB means it’s connected by USB.
Wired and offline play
For wired play, use a data-capable USB cable. A charge-only cable won’t work. Amazon’s connection-options page says offline gameplay is supported on PC, Mac, Android and iOS. It also says offline gameplay over Bluetooth and USB isn’t supported on iOS versions below 16. Help pages change, so check the current versions for your device.

The Bottom Line
Start with what you have. If you own a controller Amazon lists as compatible with your device, try it before spending $69.99. If Luna is your main platform and you want the official Cloud Direct setup, the Luna Controller is the safer buy.
