It describes a water-jet test condition; immersion is a separate, model-specific claim. Check your exact phone’s instructions, and do not treat any rating as permission for underwater use.
What IP69 does—and does not—tell you
IP69 refers to protection under a specified water-jet test condition, not a general promise that a phone is waterproof in every situation. For example, Motorola describes its edge 70 pro plus as resisting powerful, high-temperature jets for up to 30 seconds, while listing immersion separately as an IP68 condition: still, fresh water up to 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes. Motorola also says the phone is “Not designed to work while submerged underwater.” Motorola’s care guidance is for that particular model; do not apply its limits to another phone.

OPPO likewise gives distinct conditions for the A6 Pro 5G: its product page specifies IP68 immersion in fresh water up to 1.5 metres for 30 minutes, with no more than a 5°C difference between the water and product temperature. Its IP69 water-jet condition specifies water at 80±5°C and 15±1 L/min for two minutes, with up to 30 seconds at each of four jet angles. Why swimming and salt water are different risks
Swimming means intentional, moving-water exposure
A phone’s stated still-water immersion condition does not establish that it can withstand swimming. Movement, pressure, impacts, and conditions outside the stated test can differ from the manufacturer’s specified immersion. Huawei advises users not to purposefully place a phone in water, including while swimming or showering. Salt water is not covered by a fresh-water claim
Do not take an IP69-rated phone into the sea on the assumption that its rating protects it. Motorola says not to expose the cited phone to salt water or liquids other than fresh water. OPPO states that the A6 Pro 5G has no protection against salt water and other liquids. Huawei warns that seawater can corrode components. Motorola, OPPO, Huawei
Pool water needs caution too
Clean, still fresh water is not the same as treated pool water. ASUS explicitly tells users to avoid liquids other than clean water and names swimming-pool water among the exposures to avoid. Check the exact phone before any water exposure
Ratings and terms vary by model and market. Before relying on a water-resistance claim, look up the maker’s guidance for your precise model and check:
- Whether it has a separate immersion rating in addition to IP69.
- The stated water type, depth, duration, and test conditions for immersion.
- Whether the manufacturer warns against swimming, pools, salt water, or other liquids.
- How wear, drops, repairs, or other damage may affect water resistance.
- What the warranty says about liquid or immersion damage in your market.
Water resistance can decline with normal wear. Motorola says its resistance decreases over time and that exposure outside the stated conditions is not covered by warranty. Huawei and OPPO also state in the cited guidance that liquid or immersion damage is not covered. Warranty terms are maker-, model-, and market-specific, so read the documentation supplied for your device rather than assuming coverage.

What to do if your phone gets wet
- Do not charge it while it is wet. Motorola specifically cautions against charging a wet phone.
- Dry the exterior gently. Motorola recommends using a soft, clean cloth. Follow your model’s instructions for any further drying or care.
- Get help if salt water or substantial liquid entered the phone. Huawei advises contacting authorized service promptly in those circumstances.
