Amazon has built its 1,000th Amazon Leo satellite at its Kirkland, Washington factory, according to an Ars Technica report dated October 8, 2026. Amazon executives in the same interview said initial service is planned for 2026, but they did not give a specific public launch date, and the reporting does not say that commercial service is already running. The 1,000th unit is a manufacturing count. At the time of the interview, Amazon reported 396 satellites in orbit.
What the 1,000 figure counts
The milestone measures satellites built, not satellites working in space. Amazon’s Leo vice president of business, Chris Weber, said in the same interview that the company has 396 satellites in orbit, and that some are still being raised into their final positions. A great deal of ground-side work also remains before the network is ready for customers.

Amazon executive Rajeev Badyal described the production ramp this way: it took six months to make the first 27 satellites, and the company can now make 27 a week. That is the executive’s own account of manufacturing pace. It has not been independently audited, and it does not tell you how many satellites will be in orbit on any given date.

When service is expected to start
Amazon’s current public overview says the company began an enterprise preview in November 2025 and plans to expand service in 2026 as coverage and capacity grow. Weber’s wording in the October interview is more specific about intent: “the plan is to launch initial service in 2026.” Neither source gives a day, a month, or a list of initial countries.
Several points are established, and they help explain the timeline:
- The network was renamed from Project Kuiper. Amazon says it adopted the Amazon Leo name on November 13, 2025.
- Amazon’s initial constellation design includes more than 3,000 low Earth orbit satellites. Its broader deployment began in April 2025.
- Amazon says it has secured more than 80 launches from Arianespace, Blue Origin, SpaceX, and ULA.
The sources do not establish consumer pricing, equipment prices, or detailed service terms. Any date beyond “2026” should be treated as unconfirmed until Amazon announces it.

Designed by SpaceX, the Starlink Mini Kit provides dependable connectivity without wired infrastructure, making it ideal for travel, camping, work, off-grid cabins, RV setups, and locations with no traditional broadband options.
- COMPACT AND PORTABLE DESIGN: The Starlink Mini is small enough to carry in a backpack yet powerful enough for daily use. Its portable, all-in-one design includes an integrated Wi-Fi router, DC power input, and rugged housing suitable for on-the-go applications. Whether at a campsite, construction site, or temporary location, Starlink Mini offers quick deployment and reliable performance.
- EASY TWO-STEP SETUP: Get online in minutes—simply plug in the Mini, point it at the sky, and connect. The kit includes everything needed for installation, including a kickstand, pipe adapter, power cable, and power supply. Use the Starlink app to find a clear sky view, check obstructions, explore mounting options, and manage your Starlink account and hardware settings.
- BUILT-IN ROUTER WITH WI-FI 5: The Starlink Mini includes an integrated dual-band Wi-Fi 5 router for strong wireless coverage and stable speeds. A built-in ethernet port provides wired connectivity for routers, mesh systems, gaming devices, or network hardware. Average power consumption of 25–40 watts supports efficient operation in off-grid or mobile power setups.
Where the schedule could slip
Manufacturing and testing
Production director Paul Palcisco said that manufacturing and testing a single satellite takes several weeks, while design changes can be built in one to two weeks. Badyal said the network architecture and hardware needed significant development before the team could confirm that the system would meet its expected performance needs. Both points are company statements about its own process.
Launch vehicles
Badyal said Amazon chose a diverse set of launch providers on purpose. He expected Vulcan flights to resume soon after a nozzle issue was fixed, and he said Amazon expected one Vulcan launch, one Arianespace launch, and at least one more Vulcan mission during 2026. These were plans stated on October 8, 2026, and launch schedules change quickly. He summed up the difficulty this way: “It can be frustrating at times because things move, but at the same time, if this was easy, everybody else would be doing it, as you know.”
How the system is built
Amazon describes three parts. Ground gateway antennas pass data between the satellites and terrestrial networks. Satellites in low Earth orbit relay traffic between gateways and users. Customer terminals at each location provide the connection. Amazon says its satellites operate between 590 and 630 kilometers above Earth and use optical links between spacecraft.

- Easy To Use:With electronic buzzer, easy operation, audio tone and LCD display with backlight to show the satellite signal intensity.
- No External Power or batteries required: power supplied from your satellite receiver.
Amazon also says low Earth orbit can offer lower latency than traditional satellite internet because the satellites are closer to the ground. No independent latency test of the operating commercial service is available in the sources, so treat that as the company’s expectation.

Terminal tiers and published speed ceilings
Amazon sells three customer terminal tiers and publishes maximum speeds for each. These are vendor-published maximums, not independent tests and not typical speeds.
| Terminal | Size | Maximum downlink | Maximum uplink | Intended users |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leo Nano | 7 by 7 inches | Up to 100 Mbps | Not stated | Amazon’s standard tier (per Amazon’s official overview) |
| Leo Pro | 11 by 11 inches | Up to 400 Mbps | Not stated | Amazon’s mid tier (per Amazon’s official overview) |
| Leo Ultra | Not stated | Up to 1 Gbps | Up to 400 Mbps | Enterprise-grade (per Amazon’s official overview) |
Do not read the Ultra ceiling as a guarantee for every plan or user. Maximum figures show what the hardware is designed to reach under good conditions, and the Nano and Pro uplink limits have not been published in the sources reviewed.

- Gen 3 Satellite Dish: Third-generation antenna delivers a stronger, more stable signal and faster performance.
- Wi-Fi 6 Router: Modern router technology supports faster speeds, increased device capacity, and better efficiency.
- Extra 150FT Cable Included: Extended reach for more flexible installation in large spaces or hard-to-access locations.
- High-Speed, Low-Latency Internet: Stream HD content, video conference, or work remotely with confidence.
- Ideal for Rural and Remote Areas: Perfect for homes, cabins, RVs, boats, and off-grid setups where wired internet isn’t available.
Amazon’s competitive claims
Weber cited the maximum Leo Ultra speed and compared it with estimated Starlink speeds. He also pointed to AES-256 encryption and an optional private-networking path as enterprise differentiators. These are Amazon executive claims. They are not independently tested comparisons, and the sources do not establish like-for-like measurements of price, latency, or reliability between the two services.
Who Amazon is targeting
Amazon names households and communities beyond existing networks, businesses, enterprise users, and government customers as its audiences. In February 2026 it also announced ELCOME and MTN as authorized maritime resellers. The announcement cites commercial shipping, yachting, offshore operations, commercial fishing, and ferry service as use cases. It does not describe public referral terms or an affiliate program, so readers should not assume one exists.

- Check Amazon’s official Leo service page for your address. Coverage and the first countries to receive service have not been published in the sources reviewed.
- Ask for typical speeds, not only maximums, and compare them with the terminal tier you would actually buy.
- Confirm the price, installation requirements, and service terms in writing before you commit.
- For maritime or enterprise use, contact an authorized reseller directly and ask what is included in the service.
- Treat any launch-schedule date as provisional, since the 2026 launch plans depend on vehicles that have already had delays.
Amazon’s current position is clear: it is building satellites faster than it is launching them, and it expects to begin initial service in 2026. Whether that happens on a specific date in your region is not yet known.
