Oracle is reported to be using truck-delivered compressed natural gas as a temporary bridge when pipeline gas is not yet available to its data centers. The clearest case is a site near Salt Lake City. Bloomberg reported on October 8, 2026, citing people familiar with the work, that trucked gas kept that facility operating for more than a year while it waited for a gas pipeline to be built and connected. Bloomberg also reported that similar deliveries were being used for initial work at an OpenAI campus in Shackelford County, Texas. The arrangement is a logistics workaround. The reporting does not show that pipelines or grid power have become unnecessary.
How the trucked gas is reported to work
The Next Web describes the deliveries as compressed natural gas (CNG) moved in trailers, a setup it calls a “virtual pipeline.” The process, as the reporting describes it, has four stages:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Compress. Natural gas is compressed into CNG at a supply point.
- Load. The compressed gas is loaded into transport trailers.
- Transport. The trailers are driven to the data center site.
- Decompress. The gas is decompressed on site for use in the facility’s power generation.
The available reporting does not give truck counts, shipment volumes, or the equipment used at either site, so the scale of these deliveries cannot be judged from it.

The Utah and Texas supplier names come from The Next Web. Bloomberg is the primary news report, but the portion of its article available for this piece covers only its opening details, so later specifics are not included here.
Project Jupiter in New Mexico
Project Jupiter is the case where readers most often ask whether trucked gas is already in use. It is not established as in use. Oracle is reported to be weighing truck deliveries there, and nothing in the available reporting confirms a delivery plan.

The power plan has changed
In its own June 16, 2026 post, Oracle said it would use Bloom Energy fuel cells in place of the gas turbines and diesel generators it had initially proposed. Oracle also said natural gas would be filtered to remove sulfur-based odorant before it enters the fuel cells. Senior vice president Josh Pitcock wrote: “Project Jupiter’s power plan has changed significantly over the past few months.”

Oracle vice president Michael Egbert told Axios on September 24, 2026: “Project Jupiter remains on our planned schedule. We are committed to New Mexico and confident in our path forward.” Egbert also said a force-majeure notice does not by itself establish a delay or change delivery expectations. Axios reported that statement; it did not confirm a schedule change, and the schedule claim is Oracle’s position.

What the cost figure does and does not show
The Next Web reported that delivered gas through this method costs roughly four times the price of gas at a major hub, after labor, equipment, and truck fuel are counted. It attributed the estimate to East Daley Analytics, as cited by Bloomberg. This is an analyst estimate relayed by a second outlet. It is not a disclosed Oracle contract price, and it should not be read as a price for all virtual-pipeline projects.
The tradeoff between schedule and cost
The reporting frames trucked gas as a way to trade delivered fuel cost for time. A data center that cannot yet get pipeline gas can run on trucked gas, but at a premium. What the available reporting supports, and what it leaves open, is set out below.
Rank #4
- INVERTER BENEFITS, HOME BACKUP POWER: The Westinghouse iGen8200TFc is a tri fuel generator with all the benefits of an inverter, but also with home backup power and a 50A outlet; Gasoline: 6600 running/8200 peak watts, Propane: 5940 running/7380 peak watts, Natural Gas: 5280 running/6560 peak watts
- SAVE FUEL, SAVE MONEY, LESS NOISE: Inverter technology adjusts engine speed to meet power demand, significantly cutting fuel use compared to traditional generators. That's less refills and fuel runs–saving time, money, and hassle. It's also much quieter than open frames, around 60 dBA at 25% load
- TRANSFER SWITCH OR INTERLOCK KIT READY: One 120/240V 14–50R 50A outlet for home backup can run your air conditioner, refrigerator, sump pump, and more–all at once; One RV ready 120V TT-30R 30A outlet; One GFCI 120V 5–20R 20A standard duplex outlet
- LOW THD AND COPPER WINDINGS: With less than 3% THD, it's safe to power electronics like phones, computers and TVs to stay connected during outages, or on jobsites and campsites. Copper windings help the unit make cleaner power, run cooler and last longer
- DURABLE ENGINE WITH SAFETY BUILT-IN: Powered by a heavy duty 298 cc Westinghouse 4-stroke OHV engine with a cast iron sleeve; up to 17 hours of run time on a 3.9 gallon fuel tank at 25% load with automatic low oil shutdown and carbon monoxide (CO) sensor
| Comparison point | What the reporting supports |
|---|---|
| Speed to deployment | Supported in the Utah case, where trucked gas bridged a wait of more than a year |
| Delivered fuel cost | Reported at roughly four times the major-hub gas price (East Daley Analytics estimate) |
| Logistics capacity and reliability | Not stated |
| Permitting and construction dependencies | Not stated beyond the pipeline construction and integration that the Utah site was waiting on |
| Temporariness | Described as a temporary arrangement by The Next Web |
| Throughput and emissions | Not stated |
What remains unestablished
- Truck counts, shipment volumes, and delivery frequency at any site.
- The duration of the Texas deliveries beyond “initial work.”
- Whether Project Jupiter will receive trucked gas.
- Any industry-wide figure for the number of virtual-pipeline projects or their total cost.
Until Oracle or Bloomberg publishes further specifics, the reporting supports a narrow conclusion: trucked CNG has been used to bridge pipeline waits for at least one Oracle data center, at a reported premium, and it is being considered for at least one other site.
