Eligible clothing, shoes, handbags, jewelry and watches commonly qualify for a full refund within 30 days of receipt when the listing offers free returns and the item is new, unworn, tagged and in its original packaging; the item page and your order record control the actual rule.
Check the order before you remove tags or send anything back
Amazon applies return rules at item level, not as one blanket rule for every fashion purchase. In Your Orders, open the exact clothing, footwear, handbag, jewelry or watch order and read the displayed return deadline, available reasons and instructions. Also revisit the product-detail page and look for the Free returns statement. Amazon’s current fashion policy says eligible products can generally be returned within 30 days of receipt for a full refund, but eligibility, seller, marketplace and product category can change that outcome.

The order page is more authoritative than a general search result, an old email or a remembered Prime benefit. Save a screenshot of the deadline and the listing’s size, color, material and return wording if you suspect the item does not match what was advertised.
Choose the correct reason: fit problem or listing error
Your selected reason affects the instructions Amazon gives you and helps distinguish a normal change-of-mind return from an item that is defective or materially different from its listing. Describe what actually happened.

Do not call a listing mismatch “didn’t fit” just to use a simpler menu option. A precise reason creates a clearer record if the seller later disputes the return.
How to return clothes that do not fit
- Open the order. Go to Your Orders, find the purchase and select Return or replace items (the exact button wording can vary by marketplace and app version).
- Select the fit reason. Choose the option that matches tightness, looseness, length or another sizing issue. Confirm whether the product page showed free returns.
- Review the condition requirement. Fashion items should be new and unworn, with original tags, packaging and any certificates of authenticity. A brief try-on to check fit is different from wearing the item outside, washing it or altering it.
- Select a return method. Amazon will display the available drop-off or label choices for your address and order. Follow that personalized instruction rather than using a label from another purchase.
- Package the item carefully. Put the garment or footwear back with its tags, accessories, box, dust bag and other supplied materials. Cover or remove old shipping labels if Amazon instructs you to reuse the package.
- Hand it to the specified carrier or location. Ask for a receipt showing the tracking number. Keep it until the refund appears in your account.
If the size chart itself appears wrong, photograph the chart and the garment’s measured dimensions before returning it. That supports a “not as described” explanation when the delivered measurements materially contradict the listing, rather than treating the matter as ordinary personal preference.
Can you exchange an Amazon shirt, dress or shoe?
An exchange is possible only when Amazon presents an exchange option for that particular order. Availability depends on the item, seller, inventory, color and size. Open the order and look for a size or color selector under the replacement or exchange choices.

Return-and-reorder is often safer when a popular size is selling out: place the replacement order first if you can afford the temporary charge, then return the original against its own order. Do not send a different item back under the original order number.
What if the clothes are not like the pictures?
For a wrong color, different fabric, missing embellishment, counterfeit concern, incorrect model, damage or defect, document the discrepancy before packaging the item. Photograph the front and back, the sewn-in and mailing labels, every defect, and the shipping box. Save screenshots showing the listing photos, title, color name, materials and size information as they appeared when you ordered.
Choose Not as described, Damaged or Defective, whichever is most accurate. This is important for third-party purchases because an eligible item that is damaged, defective or materially different from its description can qualify for Amazon’s A-to-z Guarantee if the seller does not provide an approved remedy.

Contact the third-party seller first
Use the order’s seller-contact option and state the defect or mismatch, the order number, the remedy you want and the photographs you have. Keep communication inside Amazon’s messaging system. Give the seller the response period Amazon displays; do not close the case merely because the seller promises an off-platform refund.

If the seller does not resolve an eligible damaged or not-as-described claim, use the A-to-z Guarantee claim route from the order or customer-service area. Submit the listing screenshots, photos, messages, return tracking and receipt. The guarantee is an escalation path for qualifying third-party orders, not a substitute for following the ordinary return instructions first.
Who pays return shipping?
The label you receive depends on how the order was fulfilled and what the listing promises. Fulfilled-by-Amazon orders generally provide an Amazon prepaid label. Seller-fulfilled orders may provide a label generated by Amazon or one supplied by the seller. Amazon’s fashion-return rules state that the seller pays return delivery under the stated eligible conditions, but the exact option and any exceptions appear in your order’s return screen.

Never assume that buying your own postage guarantees reimbursement. If Amazon instructs you to print a label, use that label; if the seller sends a label, retain the message and tracking details.

Amazon’s fashion page requires eligible returns to be in new and unworn condition with all original packaging, tags and certificates of authenticity. For shoes, keep the footwear box clean and avoid testing outdoors. For jewelry and watches, return boxes, manuals, protective films and authenticity documents. Do not remove hygiene seals or protective liners unless you need to verify an apparent defect.

Keep that check limited: do not wash, tailor, perfume, stain or wear the item for an outing. If the item arrived visibly damaged, photograph it before trying it on.
How long does an Amazon fashion refund take?
The refund clock does not necessarily start when you click “Return.” Amazon says the refund is issued after Amazon or the seller receives the package and determines that it meets the eligibility requirements. Its general policy says receiving and processing a return can take up to 30 days. Your bank or card issuer may then need additional time to post the credit.
- Save the carrier receipt and tracking number at drop-off.
- Monitor tracking until delivery is recorded.
- Check the order’s return status and your payment account.
- If tracking shows delivery but the status does not change, contact Amazon with the tracking number and receipt.
- If the item is rejected, read the stated reason and use the seller or A-to-z route when the order qualifies.
Do not discard the receipt when the carrier marks the parcel delivered. It is your strongest evidence if the package is misplaced or the return is later questioned.
Fast decisions for common situations

Common mistakes that delay or jeopardize a return
- Waiting beyond the displayed deadline: a general 30-day rule does not override an item-specific exception.
- Removing tags or discarding packaging: this can make a fashion item fail the new-and-unworn requirement.
- Choosing an inaccurate reason: a material listing error should not be recorded as simple buyer’s remorse.
- Sending the wrong variant: match the return label to the exact order and include only the items listed in that return.
- Paying postage without checking instructions: first verify whether Amazon or the seller supplies a prepaid label.
- Losing proof of handoff: keep the receipt and tracking until the refund is posted.
- Relying on old Prime Try Before You Buy advice: Amazon ended eligible orders on January 31, 2025; do not assume a seven-day try-on period exists.

- Check whether the product page says Free returns.
- Select the most accurate reason.
- Photograph any wrong label, damage or listing mismatch.

- Obtain a receipt with tracking.
- Keep all evidence until the refund or exchange is complete.
Amazon’s current policies are the controlling source for the marketplace, seller and item you bought. When the displayed instructions conflict with a remembered rule, follow the order-specific instructions and ask customer service for clarification before shipping.
