Amazon Elastic Transcoder support ended on November 13, 2025. AWS says that after that date customers can no longer access its console or resources. For file-based video processing, AWS recommends AWS Elemental MediaConvert; for live-video encoding, AWS identifies AWS Elemental MediaLive instead. The right replacement depends on what your old jobs actually did, so plan to rebuild and validate the workflow rather than expect a guaranteed one-click migration.
Choose the replacement for the workload
- Processing uploaded files: AWS recommends AWS Elemental MediaConvert as the replacement for Elastic Transcoder’s file-based workflows.
- Encoding live video: AWS says to use AWS Elemental MediaLive. MediaConvert is not the live-video encoding replacement.
AWS’s February 2025 migration article describes MediaConvert as supporting capabilities including resolutions up to 8K and frame rates up to 120 FPS, along with formats and features such as HEVC, Apple ProRes, AV1, Dolby Audio, CMAF outputs, captions, overlays, scaling, and audio normalization. These are AWS’s service capability claims, not a guarantee that a particular old job can be reproduced unchanged. Confirm current support and configuration for your outputs before migrating.

What the shutdown means for existing workflows
The November 13, 2025 end-of-support date has passed. AWS says Elastic Transcoder customers can no longer access its console or resources, so do not plan on opening the service to export old presets or job settings. AWS Samples provides scripts that were designed to call the Elastic Transcoder API to retrieve resources and convert preset or job settings; the sample README warns that those retrieval scripts stop working when the service is discontinued. Since the shutdown has occurred, do not assume they can retrieve your configuration now.
Recommended Free Tools
Start with any job definitions, preset exports, application configuration, logs, infrastructure templates, and backups your team retained. If an important configuration or resource is inaccessible, contact AWS Support about your account-specific recovery options; there is no established universal post-shutdown recovery path.

Plan the migration from the workflow you need
- Inventory inputs, jobs, and outputs. Record source formats, job triggers, presets, output destinations, naming rules, notifications, retries, and downstream consumers. Capture the actual output requirements rather than relying only on preset names.
- Map each job to MediaConvert. Recreate the needed jobs, presets, and templates using MediaConvert’s configuration model. AWS’s February 2025 migration guidance describes a script-based preset-conversion approach, and AWS Samples publishes conversion scripts for preset and job settings. Treat conversion as a starting point: it cannot establish that every setting or workflow dependency has been carried over correctly.
- Rebuild surrounding integrations. Review permissions, storage paths, event handling, and operational automation. AWS’s migration guidance discusses integrations involving Amazon S3, Amazon SNS, Amazon SQS, and Amazon CloudWatch; check which of these your own workflow uses and update the relevant configuration.
- Validate representative jobs before switching production traffic. Compare results with known-good outputs, including video and audio behavior, captions, encryption or DRM, image overlays, packaging, scaling, naming, storage, notifications, and playback by downstream systems. Test failure handling and retries as well as successful jobs.
- Choose a cutover based on measured workload behavior. Run representative files through the new workflow and assess queueing, parallel throughput, and end-to-end turnaround against your operational needs. AWS describes MediaConvert as optimized for processing more files in parallel and offers accelerated transcoding, but actual latency depends on the workload and configuration.
Compare the practical trade-offs before committing
Output compatibility
Check codecs, containers, streaming formats, resolution, frame rate, captions, encryption, audio processing, and image-processing needs against MediaConvert’s current support. A service capability list is not a job-by-job compatibility assessment; validate the exact combination your viewers or downstream systems require.
Throughput and turnaround
MediaConvert may fit workflows that need more files processed in parallel, and AWS describes accelerated transcoding as an option. Model expected arrival patterns, queueing, and turnaround with representative jobs. Do not infer your production performance from a general service description.

Cost model
AWS describes MediaConvert pricing as on-demand pricing based on output duration and characteristics, with Basic and Professional tiers, per-second billing, volume discounts, and reserved pricing. The reserved option described in AWS’s migration article requires a 12-month commitment. Estimate costs using current prices for your region, tier, and representative jobs; a starting rate would not predict an individual workflow’s bill.

Budget for more than changing an encoder endpoint. Recreating job configuration, permissions, storage paths, event handling, retries, and downstream validation can be a substantial part of the work. Teams without the time or expertise to do that internally can investigate AWS-listed migration partners, but should confirm each provider’s current availability, regional coverage, and scope directly.

A separate use case: keeping a YouTube channel live
Continuous playback of uploaded videos on YouTube is different from transcoding files for an application or media pipeline, so StreamNeo is not an Elastic Transcoder or MediaConvert replacement. If your separate goal is to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, so your computer does not have to stay on. You upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Start a StreamNeo free day.
