You can loop Punjabi and Bhangra videos in OBS Studio with its VLC Video source, then send the program to YouTube through Live Control Room using RTMPS. First make sure you have permission to broadcast every recording, then test that your M3U entries play and loop correctly. An M3U media playlist is not the same thing as YouTube’s HLS ingest playlist, and neither OBS nor a playlist grants music rights.
Before you build the stream, clear the music rights
Make sure your permission covers a live YouTube broadcast of each recording, the territories where viewers may watch, and any archive you plan to keep. A public playlist, an M3U link, or a consumer music subscription does not by itself establish rebroadcast rights.

YouTube says it scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you to stop using the content; if the matched material continues, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also end a stream. YouTube’s guidance says that even licensed content may be interrupted if the channel has not been added to the rightsholder’s Content ID allowlist. Ask the relevant rightsholder to allowlist your channel and keep a copy of your agreement.

Decide separately whether to archive the broadcast. YouTube says Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the stream completes when the creator chooses to archive it, so verify that your license covers the archive as well as live use.

Check what your M3U playlist actually contains
An ordinary M3U file is a playlist for a media player: its entries point to media files or media URLs. HLS also uses an M3U-derived playlist format, but YouTube’s HLS ingest is a separate delivery protocol in which an encoder uploads media segments. For the usual OBS setup, treat your M3U as a playback source and use RTMPS to send the encoded program to YouTube.
Verify every entry before opening OBS
- Check that each listed file exists at the path in the playlist and that the account running OBS can access it.
- If entries use relative paths, network locations, authentication, or provider-generated URLs, test them in the installed VLC player. Do not assume every M3U variant or remote link will work in OBS.
- Play the list from beginning to end, including the transition from the last item back to the first. Listen for silence, unexpected gaps, abrupt cuts, or files that fail to open.
- Use only media you are authorized to rebroadcast. A playable URL is not evidence of permission.
Build and test the playlist in OBS
- Install compatible VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source uses VLC libraries and will not appear if the required VLC installation is missing. OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. Restart OBS after installing VLC if the source is still absent.
- Add the playlist source. In your scene, choose Sources → + → VLC Video. Add your media items to the source’s playlist. OBS documents playlist controls, but does not promise universal import support for all external M3U formats; validate the actual file and paths with your installed VLC and OBS versions.
- Choose playback order. Keep the list in sequence for a planned program, or enable shuffle if you want randomized playback. Confirm the order with a test before going live.
- Enable the loop. In the VLC Video source properties, turn on Loop Playlist. OBS documents this option as on by default, but verify its state rather than relying on the default. The basic Media Source is for a single supported file and has a single-file loop option; use VLC Video when you need a playlist.
- Set visibility behavior deliberately. The source can stop when hidden, pause and resume, or continue playing, depending on its visibility settings. For a one-scene continuous stream, keep the source visible and test what happens if you switch scenes or hide it; otherwise playback may stop or resume unexpectedly.
- Make sure the scene has video. If your playlist contains audio-only tracks, add an image or other visual you have rights to use so the broadcast has a video picture. Preview the scene and listen to the audio before streaming.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Create or select a live broadcast. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast you intend to run.
- Copy the stream key. Use the stream key shown for that broadcast in OBS’s stream settings. Treat it like a password: do not share it or publish a screenshot containing it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in Live Control Room before broadcasting.
- Use RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP. Select YouTube as the service in OBS and use its supported connection method; do not choose HLS just because the source playlist has an .m3u extension.
- Start with a format your connection can sustain. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Match the output to your source material and sustained upload capacity.
YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, gives format-specific bitrate ranges rather than one rate for every stream. For H.264, it lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps; for 720p at 30 fps, it lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not guarantees that a particular home connection will remain stable. Choose a rate your upload connection can reliably maintain, and test with representative motion and audio.

Run a full preflight before leaving it unattended
- Preview the stream in OBS and confirm the picture, track transitions, and audio levels are as intended.
- Let the playlist reach its last item and confirm it starts again from the beginning without stopping or leaving an unintended gap.
- Start a test broadcast and check YouTube’s stream health and warnings in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health during an event.
- Confirm that your computer will have power, the network can sustain the selected upload rate, and the playlist files will remain accessible for the whole run.
- Write down how you will restore the stream if OBS, the computer, the network, or YouTube disconnects. The setup does not establish guaranteed uninterrupted 24/7 operation; stability depends on the host, power, network, source media, encoder, and platform.
- Make an explicit live-only or archive decision after checking the archive terms for every track.

When HLS ingestion is actually the intended setup
Use YouTube HLS only when your encoder is deliberately configured to deliver HLS segments. YouTube’s HLS guidance calls for TS segments sent with HTTPS POST/PUT, segment durations of 1–4 seconds, no byte ranges, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube states that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Those are ingest requirements, not settings for an ordinary media playlist in OBS; most creators should use the RTMPS path above.
