The standard Echo (4th Gen) has a larger speaker array and a built-in smart-home hub, making it the better fit if fuller audio hardware or compatible smart-home connectivity matters. They are separate Amazon devices, not two names for the same speaker.
Echo Dot and Echo are different devices
Amazon lists the Echo Dot and Echo as separate product families. The 4th-generation Echo Dot is a compact sphere; the 4th-generation Echo is the standard, larger Echo model. Keep the names distinct when comparing them: “Echo” here means the standard Echo (4th Gen), not the Dot. Amazon’s Echo Dot identification guide and Echo device identification guide identify them separately.
How do their size and speakers compare?
| Feature | Echo Dot (4th Gen) | Echo (4th Gen) |
|---|---|---|
| Form factor | Compact sphere, 3.9 × 3.9 × 3.5 inches, according to Amazon | Larger standard Echo sphere; the cited Amazon announcement does not provide a directly comparable dimension |
| Speaker hardware | One 1.6-inch front-firing speaker | One 3-inch woofer, dual-firing tweeters, and Dolby processing |
The Echo’s larger speaker array is the clearest audio-hardware distinction. Amazon said its 4th-generation Echo uses a 3-inch woofer, dual-firing tweeters, and Dolby processing. Those are manufacturer specifications and descriptions, not the results of an independent listening comparison. Amazon’s 2020 Echo announcement describes the Echo hardware; Amazon’s Dot guide lists the Dot’s dimensions and speaker.
Choose the Echo Dot (4th Gen) if its compact size suits your space and Alexa voice use is the priority. Choose the Echo (4th Gen) if you want the more substantial speaker hardware. The sources cited here do not establish an equivalent official Echo dimension, so check the local product details or manual if its exact footprint matters.

What smart-home features does the standard Echo add?
The standard Echo (4th Gen) includes a built-in smart-home hub supporting Zigbee, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), and Amazon Sidewalk, according to Amazon’s launch announcement. Amazon’s developer materials also list Echo (4th Gen) as a Thread border router. The cited material does not attribute that built-in Zigbee hub to the Echo Dot (4th Gen).
This does not mean every Zigbee, Matter, or Thread product will work with the Echo. Compatibility and setup depend on the particular device and software; check the device maker’s requirements before choosing a hub. Amazon’s Matter update and Thread support documentation describe Amazon’s support and device information.
