If the Documents shortcut disappeared, you can usually restore it without moving or changing your files. Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer, find the Documents folder, then pin it to Quick access or create a desktop shortcut—depending on which one you lost.
First, identify which Documents shortcut is missing
Windows can show Documents in several places. A Quick access pin appears in File Explorer; a desktop shortcut is an icon on the desktop; and Windows 10 also offers Documents from Start. These are separate entry points, so restoring one does not automatically restore the others.

| What disappeared | Where to restore it | Best first step |
|---|---|---|
| Documents in File Explorer | Home or the navigation pane, depending on Windows version | Open File Explorer and pin Documents to Quick access |
| Documents icon on the desktop | Desktop | Create a shortcut from the Documents folder |
| Documents under Start | Start menu in Windows 10 | Open Start and check beneath the user icon |
| The folder or its files | Your user profile or another configured folder location | Search for Documents and check its contents |
Restore Documents in File Explorer
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer. You can also open it from the taskbar or Start menu. Microsoft’s File Explorer guide lists these ways to launch it.
- In Windows 11, check Home and the left navigation pane. On Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, the known folders—including Documents—are available there by default as pinned folders. Microsoft explains Quick access and its pinned folders.
- If Documents is absent, browse to it or search for the Documents folder in File Explorer. Right-click the folder and select Pin to Quick access. In Windows 11, you may need to use Show more options in the context menu to see the command.
This pin restores an entry in File Explorer; it does not create a desktop icon.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCreate a Documents shortcut on the desktop
- Use File Explorer to locate and open the Documents folder.
- Right-click the folder and choose the command to create a shortcut. In Windows 11, the command may be under Show more options; the wording and menu placement can vary by release.
- Place the new shortcut on the desktop if Windows creates it in the folder’s current location. You can then use it to open Documents directly.
Creating a desktop shortcut does not pin Documents to Quick access. Use the Quick access steps above if you want it listed in File Explorer instead.

Find Documents from Start in Windows 10
In Windows 10, open Start and look beneath the user icon for Documents. This is a different route from the Windows 11 Home and navigation-pane pins. Microsoft’s Windows 10 guidance describes accessing Documents from Start.

A missing shortcut alone does not mean the folder or its contents were deleted. Search for Documents in File Explorer or browse to your user profile and check whether the folder is there. If you find the folder but not the files you expect, restoring a shortcut will not recover deleted files; investigate the missing contents separately.
