For a visually rich 4K home-cinema watchlist, start with Our Universe on Netflix and nature and science documentaries in Apple TV+’s documentary collection. Treat these as titles to check, not guaranteed 4K picks: catalogs and playback formats can vary by country, device, plan, and time. Before you press play, open the title’s detail page on the device you’ll use and check its quality badges.

4K nature and science titles to check

These selections offer varied subjects—from animal behavior to space and meteorites. Their catalog pages help you find them, but a collection listing alone does not confirm a title’s resolution or HDR format on your device.

Our Universe (Netflix, 2022)

This six-part nature and science documentary, narrated by Morgan Freeman, links the history of the cosmos with life on Earth. Episode descriptions include a green sea turtle and elephants. Netflix’s title page associates Our Universe with its Premium 4K + HDR experience; check the page in your local catalog and the quality label on your device before watching: Netflix: Our Universe.

Netflix also lists Life on Our Planet, Alien Worlds, A Trip to Infinity, The Dinosaurs, Our Oceans, and Unknown: Cosmic Time Machine as related titles. Those recommendations are discovery leads, not confirmation that each is available in 4K or HDR. Check each title separately.

Apple TV+ documentary picks

Apple’s documentary collection is a useful place to browse these titles. It does not establish the format badge for every film or series, so verify the individual listing in your region: Apple TV+: Documentary Films & Series.

  • The Year Earth Changed: David Attenborough narrates this documentary about nature during lockdown.
  • Earth at Night in Color: Tom Hiddleston narrates this series about nocturnal animal life.
  • Tiny World: Paul Rudd narrates a nature series focused on small animals.
  • Fathom: This documentary follows two marine biologists investigating whale sounds.
  • Fireball: Visitors From Darker Worlds: A documentary about meteorites and shooting stars.

How to confirm a stream will play in 4K

A title’s availability and the quality it actually plays at are different questions. Netflix says, “Most (but not all) Netflix titles are available in HD or 4K.” It also says the title page shows the quality that will play on the device you’re using. A device limited to 1080p may show HD even if that title is offered in 4K on other equipment. See Netflix’s video-quality guidance.

  1. Open the title on the viewing device. Check its detail page for the quality label there, rather than relying on a listing or badge seen on a different device.
  2. Check the plan and connection. Your subscription must support the target quality, and slow or unstable internet can reduce resolution. Apple recommends a minimum connection speed of 25 Mbps for 4K streaming; its devices may fall back to a lower-quality version if the connection is too slow.
  3. Check the whole signal chain. For Netflix 4K/HDR playback, the TV, streamer, and audio receiver must support the target quality, and the relevant HDMI ports should support HDCP 2.2 or later. Netflix specifies Premium High Speed or Ultra High Speed HDMI cables for viewing on its Premium plan. A cable upgrade is only relevant if the cable you have cannot carry the required signal.
  4. Read picture and sound labels separately. 4K/UHD describes resolution. HDR affects luminance and color; Dolby Vision is one HDR format. Dolby Atmos describes immersive audio on compatible equipment. A 4K badge does not by itself promise HDR or Atmos.

Understand the format labels

4K UHD is 3840 × 2160 pixels; HD is 1920 × 1080 pixels. These are resolution labels, not guarantees about HDR, sound, or the quality a particular device will receive. Apple’s guide explains how to find titles with 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision, or Dolby Atmos in the Apple TV app: Apple Support: Find films with 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos (published March 5, 2025). Disney+ also defines 4K UHD at 3840 × 2160 pixels in its video-quality help (search result dated March 20, 2026).

For Apple TV app rentals and purchases, icons on a film’s product page show the highest format available. Apple says playback uses the best quality supported by the device in use, so the highest listed format may not be the format your setup plays.

Compare titles against your setup

If you’re choosing between two or more options, compare their title and genre, the resolution shown on your device, any HDR and audio-format labels, how you access the title, and whether your equipment and connection support those formats. Subscription inclusion, rental or purchase access, and local catalog availability depend on the specific listing.
