Amazon’s Alexa terms, by contrast, say Alexa interactions are recorded, processed and retained in the cloud. Alexa offers a useful privacy dashboard and deletion controls, but Amazon removed its “Do Not Send Voice Recordings” local-processing option on March 28, 2025.
That does not make either assistant private by default. Transcripts, account activity, personalization and inferred profiles can still be created. The practical choice depends on the exact device, country, account type and software version—especially because Google is moving mobile Assistant users toward Gemini.

Quick answer: which assistant is more private?
If your first priority is minimizing default storage of the actual audio recording, choose a Google Assistant/Nest device whose current settings show audio saving disabled. Google’s Safety Centre says, “By default, your audio recordings are not saved on Google servers.”
Alexa is more transparent in some operational areas: its app exposes a dedicated privacy dashboard where you can review and delete voice recordings, text transcripts and typed requests. However, Amazon’s Alexa Terms of Use state that “Amazon records, processes, and retains Alexa Interactions and other information from your account … in the cloud to provide, personalize, and improve our services.” Amazon also warns that voice requests to delete data may not work in every circumstance.

- Pick neither on autopilot: use the physical microphone mute switch for sensitive moments, enable the shortest available auto-delete period, and review connected services such as shopping, calendars, contacts and smart-home accounts.
What “more private” means in this comparison
Smart-assistant privacy is not one setting. It includes what happens to the audio signal, transcripts, account activity, human-review samples, personalization data and inferred profiles. It also includes whether the assistant named in a product listing is still the software running on that hardware.
| Privacy question | Why it matters | What is documented |
|---|---|---|
| Is raw audio saved by default? | Saved audio is more sensitive than a short-lived command because it can be replayed, reviewed or used in later processing. | Google says audio saving is off by default. Amazon’s terms describe Alexa interactions as recorded, processed and retained in the cloud. |
| Can you inspect and delete activity? | Review and deletion controls let you find accidental activations and remove stored history. | Both vendors provide activity controls. Alexa exposes them in Alexa Privacy; Google provides My Activity controls and a voice command for deletion. |
| Can people review samples? | Human review can expose speech content even when a vendor says it is used for quality improvement. | Google has disclosed limited audio review and human processing of Assistant text. The cited Alexa documents describe improvement uses but do not give a comparable current percentage. |
| Does the service build a profile? | Voice history can contribute to personalization, advertising or inferences about interests and routines. | Independent 2025 studies reported profiling evidence for both Google Assistant and Alexa. |
| Will the privacy behavior stay the same? | Cloud services and assistant software change independently of the speaker’s hardware. | Google announced a transition from mobile Assistant toward Gemini and a planned Gemini experience for speakers, displays and TVs. |
Google Assistant: audio-saving defaults and remaining data
Raw audio is documented as opt-in
Google’s Safety Centre says audio recordings are not saved on Google servers by default. A user can enable audio saving through the Web & App Activity setting. This is the clearest advantage for someone whose main concern is whether the original recording remains available after a command is processed.
“Not saved by default” does not mean that no data exists. Assistant can still create text transcripts and related activity according to your account settings. Those records may include the words recognized from a request, the time of the interaction and information needed to carry out the command.
Human review and the 0.2 percent figure
Google says audio recordings can be used in an audio-review process. Its speech-data explanation states: “Language experts only review around 0.2 percent of all audio snippets.” That figure is a historical Google disclosure from 2019, not a current guarantee for every Assistant or Gemini product. Google also says snippets reviewed for that process are not associated with user accounts during review.
The Google UK Safety Centre explains that human reviewers, including third parties, may read, annotate and process the text of Assistant queries and related information to assess quality and improve Assistant. Therefore, disabling audio saving reduces one category of exposure but does not automatically prevent transcript processing.

Deletion and automatic expiry
Assistant interactions can be deleted in My Activity. Google also documents the voice command, “Hey Google, delete what I said this week.” Automatic deletion can be set to three or 18 months, or audio storage can be turned off. The available choices can vary with account, product and region, so check the controls shown for your account rather than assuming every setting appears on every device.
Alexa: cloud retention, dashboard controls and the 2025 change
What Amazon’s terms say
Amazon’s current Alexa Terms of Use say that Amazon records, processes and retains Alexa Interactions and other account information in the cloud to provide, personalize and improve its services. When you speak to Alexa, the device records audio and sends it to Amazon’s cloud systems for processing.
Recommended Free Tools
The terms also caution users not to share information they do not want used for those described purposes. That warning is important in shared rooms: anyone within microphone range may be captured if Alexa mishears a wake word or another sound as a command.
Where to review and delete Alexa history
Amazon’s Alexa Device FAQ directs users to More > Alexa Privacy in the Alexa app. Echo Show devices expose the same privacy area on the device. There you can review and delete Alexa voice recordings, text transcripts and typed requests.
Amazon says voice requests to delete data do not work in all circumstances and may not be correctly interpreted or executed. Treat spoken deletion as a convenience, not as proof that a particular recording has been removed. For sensitive history, open Alexa Privacy, verify the item or date range and use the on-screen deletion controls.

Local processing is no longer the strongest Alexa option
On March 28, 2025, Amazon ended the “Do Not Send Voice Recordings” option. The feature had provided limited local processing on three device models for some users speaking US English. The Associated Press reported that Amazon said users could still prevent Alexa from saving voice recordings, but removing the option eliminated a more fundamental choice: keeping supported requests from being sent to the cloud in the first place.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Amazon said, “The Alexa experience is designed to protect our customers’ privacy and keep their data secure, and that’s not changing.” The practical difference is that the available privacy controls now focus more on retention and deletion than on avoiding cloud transmission for supported commands.
Side-by-side privacy comparison
| Area | Google Assistant | Amazon Alexa |
|---|---|---|
| Default raw-audio storage | Google says audio recordings are not saved by default; saving can be enabled in Web & App Activity. | Amazon’s terms describe Alexa interactions as recorded, processed and retained in the cloud. |
| Activity review | Review Assistant interactions in My Activity. | Review recordings, transcripts and typed requests in More > Alexa Privacy. |
| Deletion by voice | Google documents “Hey Google, delete what I said this week.” | Supported in some situations, but Amazon warns that requests may fail or be misinterpreted. |
| Automatic deletion | Google documents three- or 18-month auto-delete choices, subject to account and product availability. | The cited Alexa materials do not state a comparable universal retention period; use the controls displayed in Alexa Privacy. |
| Human-review disclosure | Google’s 2019 explanation says reviewers handled around 0.2% of audio snippets; Google also describes human processing of text queries. | The cited materials describe service improvement and personalization but do not provide a comparable current percentage for human audio review. |
| Local-processing choice | The cited Google materials do not establish a universal offline mode for all Assistant devices. | “Do Not Send Voice Recordings” ended March 28, 2025, after limited availability on three models for some US English users. |
| Platform status | Google announced on March 14, 2025 that mobile users would be upgraded to Gemini; classic Assistant would later be unavailable on most mobile devices, with a Gemini-powered home-device experience planned. | Alexa remains the assistant described in the cited Echo privacy terms, but cloud features and settings can change by device and region. |
How profiling changes the answer
Deleting audio does not necessarily erase every inference made from an interaction. A request about a destination, a medication reminder, a purchase or a recurring household routine can reveal interests, schedules or relationships through transcripts and account activity.
A 2025 Proceedings on Privacy Enhancing Technologies study used persona-based experimentation involving 1,171 and 24,530 voice queries over 20 months. It reported evidence that both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa engage in user profiling based on voice interactions. The study demonstrates observed profiling behavior in its test scenarios; it does not prove that every user receives the same profile or that available controls cannot reduce it.
This is why a comparison based only on “which speaker stores less audio?” is incomplete. A service might avoid saving the original recording while still retaining a transcript or using interaction context for personalization.

What independent user research says about control
A peer-reviewed Computers & Security study published in 2025 surveyed 1,103 German participants about smart-speaker privacy requirements. Participants generally wanted more transparency and control. Users of Amazon Echo and Google Home/Nest reported fine-grained privacy settings, yet participants still wanted clearer explanations of what personal information can be derived from audio and a private mode that stores no recordings.
The result is a useful reality check: having a dashboard is not the same as making data practices easy to understand. The interface should show what is retained, for how long, which account it is attached to and whether a linked service receives the information.
How to configure Google Assistant for minimum retention
- Identify the product first. Check whether you are configuring classic Assistant, a Nest speaker or display, a television, or a mobile device that has moved to Gemini. Settings and behavior can differ by product, country and account type.
- Open your Google Account activity controls. Go to Web & App Activity and review the audio-saving setting. Leave audio saving disabled if your priority is not retaining raw recordings.
- Choose an automatic-deletion period. If your account offers auto-delete, select the shortest available period—Google documents three or 18 months—or turn off audio storage where that option is presented.
- Review My Activity. Inspect Assistant interactions for accidental activations, sensitive requests and activity from shared devices.
- Delete specific or recent activity. Use My Activity’s controls, or say “Hey Google, delete what I said this week.” For important deletions, verify the result in the activity page.
- Check connected services. Review calendar, contacts, shopping, smart-home and third-party integrations. Removing an Assistant item does not automatically establish what a separate linked service retains.
- Mute the microphone when needed. Use the device’s physical microphone switch for conversations that should not be heard by the speaker.
How to configure Alexa for minimum retention
- Open Alexa Privacy. In the Alexa app, choose More > Alexa Privacy. Echo Show users can open the privacy controls on the device.
- Review recordings and transcripts. Check voice recordings, text transcripts and typed requests, paying attention to accidental activations and shared-device activity.
- Delete from the dashboard. Use the on-screen controls for individual items or the available date ranges. Do not rely exclusively on a spoken deletion command because Amazon says it may fail or be misinterpreted.
- Inspect personalization settings. Review options related to personalized services, shopping, contacts, calendars and smart-home accounts. Disable a connection that is not necessary for the device’s purpose.
- Check retention choices shown for your account. Amazon’s cited materials do not establish one universal auto-delete period for every user, so use the options actually displayed in Alexa Privacy.
- Remember the cloud requirement. The former “Do Not Send Voice Recordings” option ended on March 28, 2025. Do not assume a supported command can be processed locally merely because the speaker is in your home.
- Use the physical microphone mute switch. Activate it for private conversations, recording-sensitive work or rooms where visitors may discuss confidential information.
Common privacy mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming a muted history means no data was processed
Audio saving, transcript retention and service processing are separate questions. Google’s default audio setting addresses raw recordings, while Assistant text and related activity may still be stored. Alexa’s deletion tools address stored history but do not turn the service into an offline assistant.
Using a voice deletion command as the only proof of deletion
Google documents a deletion command, but verification in My Activity is still prudent. Amazon explicitly warns that Alexa may not correctly interpret or execute deletion requests in all circumstances, so use the dashboard for sensitive records.
Ignoring the account behind the speaker
A household device can be connected to calendars, contacts, shopping accounts and smart-home controls. A privacy review should include those linked services, not just the assistant’s recording list.

Comparing an old Assistant with a current Gemini experience
Google announced on March 14, 2025 that mobile users would be upgraded to Gemini and that classic Assistant would later be unavailable on most mobile devices. A privacy statement about classic Assistant should not automatically be applied to a Gemini feature on another device. Check the current software name and settings before buying or configuring hardware.
Which assistant should different households choose?
Choose Google when raw-audio retention is the top criterion
Google’s documented default—that audio recordings are not saved unless you enable saving—is the strongest evidence for minimizing stored raw audio. You still need to manage transcripts, My Activity and connected services, and you should treat the 0.2 percent review figure as historical rather than a current universal promise.
Choose Alexa when its controls fit your routine—and configure them immediately
Alexa’s dedicated privacy dashboard can make review and deletion practical, particularly for households that want to inspect recordings and typed requests in one place. The trade-off is Amazon’s stated cloud recording, processing and retention model, plus the loss of the former local-processing choice.
Use neither as a confidential-room device
For bedrooms, consultation rooms, legal workspaces or other sensitive areas, the safest operational decision may be leaving the speaker unplugged or keeping its physical microphone switch muted except when needed. No cited source supports calling either ecosystem completely private.
Quick Recap
What the evidence does—and does not—prove
- It supports a difference in documented default audio retention: Google says saving is off by default; Amazon describes cloud retention of Alexa interactions.
- It supports the existence of review and deletion controls on both platforms, with Amazon’s warning that voice deletion can fail in some circumstances.
- It supports Google’s disclosure of limited audio review and text processing by human reviewers, but not a comparable current Alexa percentage.
- It supports observed profiling behavior for both assistants in a 2025 study, not an identical profile for every household.
- It does not support a universal privacy score, a guarantee that either service is offline, or a claim that one vendor retains no interaction data at all.
