The molecule has an unusual quartet ground state, supported by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and SQUID magnetometry. The result, reported by Phuong M. Tran and colleagues in the Journal of the American Chemical Society in 2024, is a fundamental chemistry advance—not a ready-to-use magnetic material.
What the team made
The reported molecule is an aluminium tris(dithiolene) complex: three redox-non-innocent dithiolene ligands surround an aluminium centre, with each ligand stabilized in radical form. The team described it as the first isolated and characterized example of this specific triradical species. The study is Phuong M. Tran et al., published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society in 2024 (doi:10.1021/jacs.4c05631).

In many metal dithiolene complexes, the ligands’ oxidation states and the metal centre’s electronic structure interact, shaping the molecule’s overall spin state. Here, the notable point is that all three ligands remain radicals in the isolated complex rather than becoming dianionic. The report establishes this particular structure; it does not provide a systematic comparison across other metal dithiolene complexes.
How the aluminium triradical was stabilized
- Prepare a radical ligand. The researchers used sulfonation of an N-heterocyclic dicarbene to generate a lithium dithiolene monoradical.
- Exchange the metal-bound ligands at low temperature. They reacted that material with aluminium triiodide, producing dark-blue crystals of the aluminium tris(dithiolene) complex without converting the radical ligands to the dianionic form.
The ligand framework carried bulky 2,6-diisopropylphenyl groups. James Donahue, a synthetic inorganic chemist at Tulane University, suggested that this steric bulk may have helped the molecule remain stable enough to characterize. That is an expert interpretation, not a demonstrated causal mechanism; the accessible account does not establish how much the substituents contributed.

- FOR BASIC TEACHING TO ADVANCED SCIENCE: 444 pieces molecular model kit, including 136 atoms, 158 bonds and 150 parts for Carbon-60(Fullerene), provides to students from Grade 7 to Graduate level.
- TWO CHEMICAL STRUCTURE MODELS: The ball-and-stick models use spheres to represent atoms and sticks to represent chemical bonds. In the space-filling model, the spheres are drawn to scale and are next to one another as atoms are in real molecules.
- CHEMISTRY EDUCATIONAL MOLECULE MODEL IN 3D: It can display chemical structure, molecular bond, and bond angle in all directions. Demonstrate fundamental molecular geometry, chemical molecular structure, stereochemistry with 3D modeling studies.
- EASY TO LEARN: The universal standard adopted for each atom's color makes it easier for you to use and learn. Atoms and chemical bonds combine tightly and firmly and can be easily disassembled by disconnecting tools.

Why the quartet ground state matters
The three radical ligands give the complex an unusual quartet ground state. X-ray analysis found the complex as a pair of enantiomers, while EPR and SQUID magnetometry were reported to support the triradical structure and quartet assignment. These measurements make the spin state a central result, not simply a structural detail.
Donahue described the quartet state as intriguing both for theory and for the practical goal of making single-molecule magnetic materials. The work may therefore inspire research into molecules whose magnetic behavior arises at the single-molecule scale. It does not show that this compound functions as such a material, and superconducting or other advanced-material applications remain possibilities rather than demonstrated outcomes.

What limits practical use
The compound is sensitive to oxygen and heat, which constrains its handling and makes it unsuitable to treat as a robust practical material. The finding is valuable because the radical state could be isolated and characterized despite that sensitivity; it does not establish a durable device, application, or material performance.
