At extreme pressure, lithium and sodium can stop behaving like the familiar metals they are at ordinary conditions. A 2009 lithium study reported a pressure-induced shift to semiconductor-like electrical behavior near 80 gigapascals (GPa); a separate study reported that sodium becomes a dense, transparent insulator at about 200 GPa. The atoms remain lithium and sodium—their electronic properties and high-pressure phases change.
What does “lose identity” mean?
It is a headline metaphor for a change in material behavior, not a change in chemical identity. Lithium does not become another element under pressure, and sodium remains sodium. What changes is how the material conducts electricity and, in sodium’s reported phase, how it interacts with visible light.

Pressure compresses a solid, bringing its atoms closer together and potentially changing its crystal structure and electronic behavior. The familiar expectation that squeezing a metal simply makes it more metallic does not describe the reported high-pressure results for these two alkali metals.
What happened to lithium near 80 GPa?
In 2009, Takahiro Matsuoka and Katsuya Shimizu measured lithium’s electrical resistance in a diamond-anvil cell at pressures up to 105 GPa. They reported a substantial rise in resistivity and a change in its temperature dependence near 80 GPa, interpreting those transport measurements as evidence of a pressure-induced metal-to-semiconductor transition. The paper describes the result as experimental evidence for that transition.

- High-quality 3 MIL lamination for added durability
- Easy to read, clear font for optimum learning
- Tear Resistant
- 18" x 24"
The key observation was electrical: resistance and its temperature dependence changed under pressure. This is evidence for semiconductor-like behavior, not a claim that lithium ceased to be the element lithium.
What happened to sodium near 200 GPa?
Ma and colleagues reported that sodium at about 200 GPa formed a dense insulating phase that was optically transparent and lacked the metallic sheen normally associated with the element. The report appeared in Nature in 2009.

This sodium result and the lithium result are related examples, but they are not the same experiment or the same measurement. The lithium study focused on electrical resistance and its temperature dependence; the sodium report highlighted an optically transparent insulating phase.

| Element | Reported pressure | Reported evidence | Finding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lithium | Transition reported near 80 GPa; resistance measurements extended to 105 GPa | Electrical resistance and its temperature dependence | Interpreted as a pressure-induced metal-to-semiconductor transition |
| Sodium | About 200 GPa | Optical transparency and absence of metallic sheen | Reported as a dense insulating phase |
These pressures and observations come from the respective 2009 reports; they should not be treated as a universal pressure threshold for metals or as directly interchangeable measurements.

Why is this surprising?
Lithium and sodium are often treated as simple metals. Under extreme compression, however, their electronic behavior does not follow the straightforward expectation that reduced spacing between atoms must improve metallic conduction. A review describes these alkali metals as losing their nearly-free-electron character at high densities. That phrase provides context, but it should not be confused with a complete, experimentally settled microscopic explanation of each reported transition.
The observations establish unusual high-pressure behavior for lithium and sodium. A single simplified mechanism should not be presented as settled solely on the basis of the resistance and optical findings summarized here.

What these results do—and do not—show
- They show that lithium and sodium can exhibit markedly nonmetallic behavior under extreme pressure.
- They do not establish that all metals become semiconductors or insulators when compressed.
- Optical appearance and electrical conductivity are different properties; sodium’s transparency is not itself a direct measurement of electrical resistance.
- The cited reports date to 2009. They establish the findings reported in those studies, not a complete account of every later development in high-pressure research.
