Possibly, but the strongest cost evidence concerns ceramic membranes and their fabrication—not verified savings in a complete industrial separation plant. Cheaper mineral feedstocks and less energy-intensive manufacturing could lower the membrane’s purchase cost; whether that reduces a plant’s total costs depends on separation performance, operating conditions, cleaning, replacement frequency and scale-up.
What counts as an inorganic membrane?
A membrane is a selective barrier that controls which substances pass through it under a driving force such as pressure, concentration or electrical potential. “Inorganic membrane” covers a broad family of materials. Ceramic membranes are one important class, made from materials that can include alumina, zirconia, titania, silicon carbide, glass and mineral-based compositions.

A typical ceramic membrane combines a porous support with a selective layer; some designs also include an intermediate layer. Much of the cost evidence available for this topic concerns ceramic membranes, particularly water and wastewater treatment, so it should not be assumed to apply equally to every inorganic membrane or industrial separation duty. See the reviews by Issaoui and Limousy (2019) and the 2022 review of ceramic membranes for water treatment.

What do published cost estimates show?
The figures below are estimates reported in a 2019 review, not verified 2026 market prices. They describe different products and cost scopes; they are not a like-for-like comparison of complete membrane modules or plant costs.

| Published estimate | What it covers | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| $130/m² | Fabricated ceramic membrane based on kaolin and other lower-cost materials | Approximate estimate reported by Issaoui and Limousy (2019); not a current quotation. |
| $220/m² | Low-cost membrane for oily-wastewater treatment made with inorganic precursors including kaolin, quartz, feldspar, sodium carbonate, boric acid and sodium metasilicate | Estimate reported by Issaoui and Limousy (2019); a different design and application from the other examples. |
| $25.5/m² | One flat support made from natural clay, kaolin and binding materials | Fabrication-cost estimate, including pressing and sintering, reported by Issaoui and Limousy (2019). It is for a support, not a finished selective membrane module. |
| $500–$1,000/m² | α-alumina porous tubular commercial membrane | Historical estimate from Céramiques Techniques (2007), as cited by Issaoui and Limousy (2019); not a current price. |
The differences in membrane design and what each estimate includes make a simple price ranking misleading. These examples show that lower fabrication costs have been investigated; they do not show that an installed separation system will cost less over its lifetime. The 2022 water-treatment review likewise identifies cost reduction and efficiency at larger scales as unresolved engineering challenges.
How could fabrication costs come down?
Replace expensive feedstocks where suitable
Research has explored natural clay, kaolin and other abundant minerals, along with industrial by-products such as fly ash. Local availability may help the economics, but a cheaper input is useful only if the resulting membrane meets the application’s performance and safety requirements. Reviews cover mineral- and waste-derived ceramic membranes, including a 2020 review of natural minerals and industrial wastes and a 2025 review of ceramic membrane fabrication and applications.

Use less energy in manufacture
Ceramic production commonly requires heating or sintering. A 2021 review identifies sintering energy as a major production-cost component and surveys approaches such as lowering sintering temperatures, using faster or alternative sintering methods, and optimizing membrane structure. Any process change still has to produce a membrane with suitable properties; energy savings alone do not establish equivalent performance or service life. See the 2021 review of lower-energy ceramic membrane fabrication.
Design the membrane and process together
Pore structure, permeability and rejection have to match the separation duty. Reducing material use or changing manufacture may affect selectivity, throughput, strength or durability. A less expensive membrane that needs more area, higher operating pressure, frequent cleaning or early replacement may not reduce the cost of the separation.

Where have lower-cost ceramic membranes been studied?
Reviews discuss applications including industrial wastewater, oil–water separation, textile effluent, food and beverage processing, and selected gas separations. Examples include fly-ash membranes studied for dye-containing textile wash water and ceramic compositions considered for oily wastewater. The 2022 water-treatment review also covers difficult settings such as saline water and wastewater containing refractory or emerging contaminants.
These examples establish areas of research, not routine commercial deployment for every feed, contaminant or plant. Performance on one wastewater does not establish suitability for a different industrial stream.

What can prevent a lower membrane price from lowering plant costs?
- Separation performance: The membrane must deliver the required selectivity or rejection and permeance or flux at the target throughput.
- Operating conditions: Pressure, temperature, pretreatment needs and feed variability affect equipment requirements and operating cost.
- Fouling and cleaning: Fouling can reduce output; chemical tolerance and cleaning requirements influence downtime, labor and consumables.
- Strength and consistency: Ceramic membranes can face brittleness or strength constraints, while controlling pore size and selective-layer quality is technically demanding.
- Scale and module design: A material that performs in a laboratory or small study still has to be manufactured consistently and assembled into reliable, suitably packed modules.
- Lifetime and full-system costs: Equipment and installation, energy, labor, waste handling, replacement frequency and membrane service life all affect lifecycle economics.
A 2019 perspective by Y. S. Lin describes commercialization of inorganic membrane separators and reactors as a continuing challenge, identifying permeance, stability, low-cost high-packing-density supports and scalable selective-layer synthesis as priorities. Lin writes in the article abstract: “In spite of intensive research and significant progress in material development and understanding of fundamentals of membrane properties and membrane processes, commercialization of inorganic membrane separation and reaction processes remains a big challenge.” Read the 2019 perspective in Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research.

- Define the duty: Specify the feed, target separation, required product quality and throughput.
- Compare performance on that duty: Check selectivity or rejection, permeance or flux, operating pressure and temperature, and pretreatment requirements.
- Account for operating realities: Include feed variability, fouling behavior, cleaning needs, chemical tolerance and expected downtime.
- Include installed and lifecycle costs: Compare equipment, installation, energy, labor, waste handling, module packing density and replacement frequency over an explicit service-life assumption.
- State the basis of the comparison: Identify the application, scale and assumptions behind any cost figure, and distinguish a fabrication estimate from a module price or total separation cost.
The reviewed sources discuss many of these engineering and economic factors, but do not establish a standardized cross-industry techno-economic benchmark. A credible savings claim therefore needs a clearly defined application and comparison basis.
