Alucard is Dracula’s dhampir son in the main Castlevania game continuity and the lead character of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. He combines human weapon use and role-playing progression with supernatural mobility and transformations. The name is not one single, unchanging biography, however: the Lords of Shadow games give him different parentage and powers, while the animated series is its own adaptation continuity.
This guide separates those versions so you can tell which Alucard, ability, relationship, or playable appearance a source is describing.

Who is Alucard in Castlevania?
In the classic game continuity, Alucard is Dracula’s son. “Alucard” is Dracula spelled backward, a name that signals his opposition to his father rather than a separate species or unrelated character. He is a dhampir: part human and part vampire. That mixed nature explains the character’s central design idea—he can fight with conventional weapons and equipment while also using supernatural abilities.

That description applies to the classic series, including the Sorrow-era setting in which Alucard operates under another identity. It should not be silently merged with the alternate Lords of Shadow biography or with the television adaptation.
Alucard’s three major continuities

These are parallel interpretations, not stages in one continuous biography. A statement that is correct for one column may be wrong for another.
What powers does Alucard have?
Classic-game abilities
The classic version’s power set is best understood as a system rather than a short, universal list. In Symphony of the Night, Alucard begins after having submerged his vampiric powers, and the adventure gradually gives the player access to equipment and abilities that define his build. Weapons, armor, accessories, consumable items, hidden discoveries, and RPG growth all affect how he fights.
Consequently, two players can use the same character in noticeably different ways. One may favor a particular weapon and defensive equipment; another may optimize statistics, exploit a discovered item, or rely more heavily on supernatural options. The game’s structure makes experimentation part of Alucard’s identity.
Other classic entries do not necessarily provide the same inventory, transformations, or progression rules. Treat claims about a specific spell, form, resistance, or statistic as game-specific unless the source names the individual title.

Lords of Shadow 2: Revelations abilities
Konami’s description of the Revelations downloadable story gives this alternate Alucard a clearly named set of mechanics:
- Glaciem: one of his named supernatural powers.
- Igneas: a second named power, distinct from Glaciem.
- Wolf transformation: he can become a wolf to navigate and fight.
- Bat-swarm transformation: he can turn into a swarm of bats.
- Time reversal: he can turn back time as part of the DLC’s ability set.
- Blood-powered enhancement: blood taken from enemies intensifies his immortal powers.
Those mechanics belong to the Lords of Shadow interpretation. They should not be presented as a complete universal moveset for the Alucard of Symphony of the Night or for the animated series.

Symphony of the Night is the clearest equipment-driven Alucard experience. The game emphasizes hidden weapons, secrets, and a role-playing structure in which the player collects gear and decides how to develop him. His “weapon” is therefore not one signature blade that defines every appearance; it is the entire loadout system.
That design has two practical consequences. First, the best choice depends on the encounter and on the statistics or properties of the item, not simply on a canonical ranking. Second, equipment discovery is part of progression: exploration can change Alucard’s capabilities as much as a conventional level increase.
The Sorrow-era games use similar collection and growth language. The official description of Aria of Sorrow, for example, highlights collecting and wielding multiple weapons and leveling up. Soma Cruz—not Alucard—is the main playable character in that story, so the game is useful context for the era’s design but is not an Alucard campaign.

In Lords of Shadow 2: Revelations, the emphasis shifts from an open-ended RPG inventory to a more defined action identity built around Glaciem, Igneas, the wolf and bat forms, time manipulation, and blood. Do not compare a weapon drop in Symphony of the Night directly with one of those named powers as if they were the same mechanic.
Is Genya Arikado really Alucard?
Yes. In the Sorrow-era setting, Genya Arikado is an Alucard persona. Konami’s Grimoire of Souls character text describes him as “A persona of Alucard, assigned to a secretive Japanese government agency, his existence known only to a few.”
The identity gives Alucard a way to work through a government role while guiding a newer protagonist and monitoring threats connected to Dracula. Arikado is therefore an alias and operational identity, not a different person who merely resembles Alucard. The disguise also explains why a character with Alucard’s history can appear in a modern institutional setting without openly announcing his true nature.
What is Alucard’s relationship with Dracula?
Classic games
The central classic relationship is son versus father. Alucard’s opposition to Dracula is personal as well as heroic: he rejects the destruction associated with his father and repeatedly stands against Dracula-related threats. Calling him Dracula’s son is accurate for this continuity.
Lords of Shadow
The relationship is reworked. The Lords of Shadow 2: Revelations announcement identifies Alucard as Gabriel’s turned son and frames the DLC around his secrets, his involvement in Dracula’s story, and Gabriel’s return. Gabriel is the relevant father figure in this continuity, not the classic Dracula biography. This is a continuity split, not a missing chapter that needs to be inserted into the older timeline.

Animated series
The television continuity uses Adrian Țepeș/Alucard as a major protagonist and presents him as Dracula’s son within the show’s adaptation. His characterization, scenes, and chronology belong to that series and should not be used as evidence for the game timelines.
Which Castlevania games let you play as Alucard?

“Playable” does not always mean the same thing. In Symphony of the Night, Alucard carries the main campaign. In Revelations, he leads a separate DLC episode. In crossover games, he may be one roster choice among many, with access rules that changed between editions. Verify the exact platform release before relying on a roster or unlock claim.
Is the Netflix Alucard the same as the game version?
No. The animated Alucard is a television adaptation character, even though he shares the Adrian Țepeș name and the broad idea of being Dracula’s son. The show has its own continuity, characterization, chronology, and presentation of his abilities.
The practical rule is simple: use the series for questions about the show’s plot and relationships, and use the individual game for questions about controls, equipment, powers, or progression. A scene or ability in the animation does not automatically establish a mechanic in Symphony of the Night.

Which Alucard experience should you choose?
- For the classic character and deepest player control: choose Symphony of the Night. It puts Alucard at the center and makes equipment, secrets, and RPG growth the main loop.
- For a focused, action-oriented alternate continuity: choose Lords of Shadow 2: Revelations. Its Alucard is defined by Glaciem, Igneas, transformations, time reversal, and blood-powered abilities.
- For the Sorrow-era identity and Arikado connection: choose Grimoire of Souls or the Sorrow-era stories as context, remembering that Alucard is not the main-story player character in Aria of Sorrow.
- For the television interpretation: watch the animated series as a separate adaptation rather than as a direct game recap.
For a straightforward modern console route to the classic experience, Konami’s official Castlevania Requiem: Symphony of the Night & Rondo of Blood compilation is the relevant package; it is listed for PlayStation 4. Availability and storefront access can change by region.

Common Alucard misconceptions
“Every Alucard has Dracula’s exact biography.”
False. Dracula’s dhampir son is the classic version. The Lords of Shadow version is Gabriel’s turned son, and the animated version follows the show’s own adaptation continuity.
“There is one definitive Alucard moveset.”
False. Symphony of the Night expresses him through equipment and progression, while Revelations names a different set of action abilities. A power must be tied to its title and continuity.
“Genya Arikado is a separate successor.”
False. Arikado is an Alucard persona used in the Sorrow-era setting.

Not necessarily. Some appearances are supporting, allied, multiplayer, or roster-based. Only Symphony of the Night and the dedicated Revelations episode clearly place him at the center of the player experience.
Bottom line
Alucard is best understood as a recurring Castlevania concept with several carefully separated versions: Dracula’s dhampir son and equipment-driven hero in the classic games; Gabriel’s turned son with Glaciem, Igneas, transformations, time reversal, and blood-enhanced powers in Lords of Shadow; Genya Arikado in the Sorrow-era identity; and Adrian Țepeș in the animated adaptation. Start with Symphony of the Night if you want the definitive playable Alucard, then treat every other appearance according to its own continuity.
