Verdict: The Altra Torin 9 is a well-balanced neutral road trainer for runners and walkers who specifically want a zero-drop platform, moderate cushioning and a roomy-but-secure forefoot. Its P35X dual-density midsole, Vibram XS DURA outsole and stable, moderately flexible ride make it suitable for everyday mileage, recovery sessions and many marathon-training plans. The main cautions are the Standard FootShape, which is less spacious than Altra’s Original fit, and the adaptation required when moving from conventional heel-to-toe drops.

What changed from Torin 8
The ninth generation is not simply a color update. Two hardware changes define it: the P35X dual-density midsole and the Vibram XS DURA outsole. Altra says the new rubber is 8.5% grippier than the Torin 8 outsole. That is a manufacturer comparison, so treat it as a directional claim rather than an independently verified percentage. Doctors of Running nevertheless found strong traction on wet roads, which makes the outsole change relevant for commuters and runners who cannot always wait for dry weather.

Runner’s World describes the midsole feel as softer than the previous model and notes a redesigned tongue and collar. Doctors of Running reports a moderately flexible forefoot and a stack that is 2 mm lower than Torin 8. The lower platform does not turn Torin 9 into a minimal shoe: 28 mm remains a substantial layer of cushioning for normal road training. Instead, it gives the shoe a closer-to-the-ground stance than many current high-stack trainers while retaining protection for daily use.

P35X foam and the ride goal
Altra describes P35X as “firmer on the outside and softer on the inside.” In practical terms, that construction aims to keep the shoe from feeling unstable when your foot loads the outside edge while preserving a softer landing under the center of the foot. Independent descriptions characterize the result as resilient and stable rather than mushy. Runners who prefer a highly flexible, low-structure shoe may notice the supportive sidewalls; runners who dislike overly soft foam may find the controlled response easier to manage during ordinary mileage.
Outsole traction versus durability
The XS DURA rubber is the most visible change underfoot. Wet-road grip is a documented strength in Doctors of Running’s assessment, and the tread is appropriate for asphalt, concrete paths and typical park connectors. There is no independent long-term mileage figure establishing how many miles the outsole will last. Rotate the shoe based on tread wear, exposed foam, compression or a change in comfort rather than assuming the 8.5% grip claim predicts a specific lifespan.
How the Torin 9 fits
Torin 9 uses Altra’s Standard FootShape. Altra says the shape leaves “plenty of room to help your toes move freely, with a secure midfoot.” That description is accurate as a starting point, but it does not mean the shoe has the company’s widest possible forefoot. Doctors of Running found the forefoot and lateral midfoot less spacious than earlier, roomier Altra designs. If you previously wore an Original FootShape model, Torin 9 can feel noticeably more fitted even when the toe area still allows natural splay.
Toe box and midfoot
The front of the shoe gives toes more freedom than a tapered conventional running shoe, but the fit narrows toward the midfoot. That combination helps keep the foot from sliding on turns and descents. It also means that a runner with a broad instep or substantial midfoot volume should not assume that every Altra model fits identically. Try the shoe with the socks you use for running, and check that your little toe is not pressing the sidewall when standing.

Altra’s sizing guidance
Altra recommends ordering one-half size larger than your dress-shoe size. Use that as a starting point, not a guarantee: dress-shoe sizing varies, and foot length can change during a long run. Measure both feet late in the day, select the larger measurement, and leave roughly a thumb’s width in front of the longest toe. The heel should stay planted when you walk quickly or climb stairs, while the toes should be able to spread without touching the upper.
- Put on the socks and any insole you will use for training.
- Loosen the laces, slide your heel fully back and stand with your weight evenly distributed.
- Check fore-aft length while standing, then walk downhill or down a staircase to test whether your toes strike the front.
- Use the available 30-day money-back period for an indoor fit check if the seller’s terms match Altra’s stated policy.
- Exchange rather than hoping the upper will stretch if you feel numbness, side pressure or heel movement after several minutes.
Understanding the zero-drop platform
Torin 9 has a 0 mm heel-to-toe drop. The heel is not elevated relative to the forefoot, so your lower leg works from a different starting angle than it would in a shoe with a conventional drop. This can feel natural to experienced zero-drop runners and surprisingly demanding to someone moving directly from a high-drop trainer.
A zero-drop shoe is not automatically better or safer. It is a geometry preference that changes loading through the calf and Achilles area. The practical response is to transition gradually: begin with short, easy outings, alternate with your familiar shoes, and increase duration only when your calves and feet feel normal the following day. Do not use the first week in Torin 9 for a long race, steep hill workout or sudden mileage increase. Persistent pain is a reason to stop and seek professional assessment, not a signal to push through adaptation.
How it runs for daily training and walking
The evidence supports Torin 9 as a neutral daily road trainer for easy mileage, recovery runs, walking and general training. Its 28 mm platform is moderate by current max-cushion standards, while the dual-density foam gives the shoe a stable, resilient character. The forefoot is moderately flexible, so the shoe bends during normal toe-off without collapsing into an unstructured slipper.

Easy and recovery runs
At conversational paces, the blend of cushioning and stability is the shoe’s strongest use case. The platform feels predictable when your stride becomes less precise late in a run, and the zero-drop geometry keeps the transition consistent from heel to toe. Runners wanting a soft, highly rockered sensation may find it less dramatic than a maximal trainer; runners who prefer to feel the road without giving up midsole protection should find the balance more appealing.
Walking and standing
Torin 9’s secure midfoot and moderate flexibility suit walking commutes, errands and extended periods on your feet. The Standard FootShape can reduce pressure on toes that dislike tapered casual footwear, but the zero-drop stance may fatigue calves for people accustomed to elevated heels. Wear it around the house first, then try short walks before an all-day outing.
Long runs and marathon training
T3 says Torin 9 can cover easy recovery runs through marathon training. That does not guarantee that every runner will prefer it for 26.2 miles. Marathon suitability depends on your experience with zero drop, the shoe’s fit after several hours, and whether 28 mm provides enough protection for your stride and surface. Test it on progressively longer training runs, including at least one session near your planned race duration, before using it in competition. A runner already comfortable in zero-drop shoes may use it across a marathon plan; a newcomer should not make race day the first serious test.

Torin 9 combines a moderately flexible forefoot with a platform independent reviewers describe as stable. Stability here comes from the shape and foam behavior, not from a posted medial post or a corrective device. The shoe should therefore appeal to neutral runners who want a planted feel without the bulk associated with traditional stability trainers.

Wet-road traction is a notable strength in Doctors of Running’s evaluation. That makes the shoe more versatile for variable weather, but no road outsole turns slick paint, leaves or ice into a safe surface. On gravel, packed dirt and smooth paths, the rubber can handle ordinary transitions; technical trails are outside the shoe’s stated road-trainer role.
Torin 9 versus other shoe types
Rather than comparing it with a single rival model, use the following framework to decide whether its design matches your current rotation.
| Decision factor | Torin 9 | Conventional-drop daily trainer | Maximum-cushion trainer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heel-to-toe geometry | 0 mm | Varies by model; heel is usually higher than forefoot | Varies by model; often paired with a higher stack |
| Cushioning level | 28 mm, moderate | Varies | Usually more underfoot material, but exact value varies |
| Toe and midfoot fit | Standard FootShape: toe room with a secure midfoot | Usually varies from tapered to wide options | Varies; softness does not determine width |
| Flexibility | Moderately flexible forefoot | Varies | Often less flexible, though designs differ |
| Traction | Vibram XS DURA; Altra claims 8.5% more grip than Torin 8 | Varies by rubber and tread | Varies by rubber and tread |
| Primary reason to choose | Zero drop, natural toe space and a stable daily ride | Familiar geometry for most runners | Maximum underfoot protection or a softer sensation |
| Main transition issue | Calf and Achilles loading can change when switching to 0 mm | Usually less adaptation for runners already using a drop | Weight, height and flexibility can require adaptation |
This comparison is about design priorities, not a universal ranking. A conventional-drop shoe may be the better choice if you need a familiar heel lift, while a maximum-cushion model may suit you if you prioritize the greatest possible stack. Torin 9 earns its place when zero drop and a broad-but-not-maximal toe shape are central requirements.

At $160 in the United States, Torin 9 sits in the premium daily-trainer range. The value case rests on a specific package: P35X foam, Vibram XS DURA rubber, a zero-drop platform, moderate weight and a fit designed to let the toes move while holding the midfoot. If you would use those features regularly, the price is easier to justify than if you are simply looking for the softest or cheapest road shoe.

The price is less compelling for a runner who does not want zero drop or who needs the room of Altra’s Original FootShape. In that situation, you would be paying for geometry and fit characteristics you may actively avoid. US pricing, color availability and stock can change, and prices in other countries are not established by the US product listing.
Who should buy Torin 9
- Runners already comfortable with zero-drop footwear who want one neutral road shoe for ordinary training.
- Walkers who prefer room for toe splay but still want a held, non-sloppy midfoot.
- Road runners who regularly encounter wet pavement and value the documented traction performance.
- Athletes building toward a marathon who can test the shoe gradually and have no issue with a moderate rather than maximum stack.
- People replacing an older Torin and specifically wanting the updated foam, tongue, collar and outsole.
Who should choose something else
- Runners who rely on a raised heel and do not want to change calf or Achilles loading.
- Anyone needing the roomiest possible Altra fit; Standard FootShape is not the same as Original FootShape.
- Those seeking a maximum-cushion sensation or a highly rockered ride rather than moderate stack and moderate flexibility.
- Buyers who need proven long-term mileage data before purchase; independent durability mileage for Torin 9 has not been established.
- People hoping for a corrective stability shoe with a formal guidance element rather than a neutral platform.
Break-in and troubleshooting checklist
Your calves feel unusually tight
Reduce the distance and alternate with a shoe that matches your previous drop. Keep early runs flat and easy. Tightness that worsens, changes your stride or becomes pain warrants stopping and obtaining medical advice.
Your toes hit the front
Recheck length while standing and walking downhill. Confirm that the laces are not pulling your foot forward. If the issue remains, use the half-size guidance and exchange the pair rather than relying on stretching.
Recommended Free Tools
Your heel slips
Use a runner’s knot if the eyelets and laces allow it, then walk briskly and run a few steps indoors. Persistent lift can indicate the Standard FootShape last does not match your heel or midfoot, even if the toe box feels comfortable.
The shoe feels too firm or too soft
Give yourself several short outings before judging the midsole, but do not force a painful fit. P35X is designed to be firmer around the outside and softer inside, so the sensation will differ from a single-density foam shoe. Compare comfort at your normal pace, not only while standing still.
Bottom line: a focused zero-drop daily trainer
Torin 9 is worth considering when your priorities are a 0 mm platform, room for natural toe movement, moderate cushioning and dependable road grip. The ninth-generation updates make it a meaningful change from Torin 8, but the shoe is not a universal upgrade for every runner: Standard FootShape is less roomy than Altra’s Original option, and zero drop requires a sensible transition. For an experienced zero-drop runner, it can cover easy runs, walking and marathon preparation in one stable, flexible package. For everyone else, confirm the geometry and fit before committing to the $160 price.
