The main choice is whether you want a managed service that hosts agents or a Kubernetes-based platform you operate and extend. Microsoft Foundry is the clearest hosted-agent alternative in the available documentation; Red Hat OpenShift AI is the clearest hybrid Kubernetes AI platform. Amazon EKS is infrastructure for building an AI/ML stack, not a documented turnkey agent service. These options overlap in purpose but are not feature-for-feature substitutes.
What does Tanzu offer for deploying AI agents?
VMware Tanzu Platform’s AI materials describe an agent harness for deploying agents, alongside centralized governance and access to models and tools. The vendor describes deny-by-default containment, secrets isolation, centralized access control and observability, a curated marketplace, and per-agent action audit metrics in Tanzu Hub. It also says the platform works with any agent framework and is optimized for Spring and Spring AI. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent performance or security test results.

A Tanzu blog dated August 31, 2026, announced additional capabilities, including agent identity, a deny-by-default runtime with separate credential storage, a curated marketplace for services, tools and MCP servers, an enhanced Agent Buildpack with an out-of-the-box harness and persistent memory, configurable human-in-the-loop controls, and AI Gateway audit metrics. An announcement does not establish that each feature is generally available; confirm availability in the relevant product documentation or release notes before treating it as a requirement met.
The distinction matters when comparing alternatives: a platform that can run agent code does not automatically provide Tanzu’s described controls, and a managed endpoint does not by itself establish equivalent governance. Compare each layer separately.

What are the alternatives to VMware Tanzu for deploying AI agents?
| Option | Category | What the cited documentation establishes | What remains to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Foundry Agent Service | Managed hosted-agent service | Deploy an agent from source code or a container image, provision an agent version, identity and endpoint, then invoke that endpoint. | Supported frameworks and protocols, network requirements, identity boundaries, regions, pricing and operational limits. |
| Red Hat OpenShift AI / Red Hat AI Enterprise | Hybrid AI platform on an OpenShift foundation | Red Hat positions its platform for developing and deploying models, agents and applications across hybrid environments; its quickstart demonstrates a multi-agent workflow. | Target-environment support, component versions, GPU and model availability, governance features and licensing. |
| Amazon EKS | Kubernetes infrastructure for AI/ML workloads | AWS documents GPU-accelerated containers, Elastic Fabric Adapter-backed training clusters and Inferentia inference workloads. | The agent runtime, identity, tool governance, audit layer, model serving and operations the team must assemble. |
When is Microsoft Foundry the better fit?
Choose it when you want a hosted agent workflow
Microsoft’s hosted-agent guide describes deployments using Azure Developer CLI, SDKs or REST, and also documents uploading Python or .NET source code. The workflow builds and pushes code or an image, creates an agent version, provisions infrastructure and a dedicated Microsoft Entra agent identity, waits for the version to become active, and then calls its endpoint. The stated prerequisites include a Foundry project and the Foundry Project Manager role.
This is the clearest alternative here if your priority is a documented managed deployment path rather than assembling an agent runtime on Kubernetes. The guide establishes a hosted deployment and endpoint lifecycle; it does not, by itself, settle whether the service fits your framework, network, region, cost, or policy requirements. Test those against your application and Azure environment before selecting it.

When is Red Hat OpenShift AI the better fit?
Choose it when hybrid Kubernetes and the broader AI lifecycle matter
Red Hat’s July 17, 2026 datasheet describes Red Hat AI Enterprise as an integrated platform for developing and deploying models, agents and applications across hybrid environments. Its February 24, 2026 announcement says the platform is built around Red Hat Enterprise Linux and OpenShift and is intended to deploy and manage those workloads across hybrid cloud.
Red Hat’s OpenShift AI quickstart illustrates an agentic software factory: agents handle requirements-to-issues, implementation, pull-request review, pipeline repair and log triage. A gateway mediates agent interaction with models, GitHub actions, logs and Tekton status. Red Hat warns that the quickstart has not been tested on every supported configuration, so treat it as an example deployment recipe—not proof that the workflow is production-ready or supported unchanged in every environment.

Before choosing this route, validate component versions, the support matrix, GPU and model availability, governance controls and licensing in the environment you intend to run. The hybrid positioning is relevant, but does not establish that every component or feature is available in every target location.

EKS can provide Kubernetes infrastructure for AI/ML workloads. AWS’s cited guide covers GPU-accelerated containers, EFA-backed training clusters and Inferentia inference. It does not establish EKS as a complete agent platform with a turnkey runtime, per-agent identity, tool governance or agent-specific audit features.

Consider EKS if your organization already standardizes on AWS and Kubernetes and is prepared to choose and operate the agent stack above the cluster. Account for the team’s ownership of the runtime, model-serving path, permissions, networking, scaling and observability; cluster capability alone does not answer how those agent-level controls will work.

Google Cloud’s official result for “Deploy an agent” surfaced Vertex AI Agent Builder documentation and described Python deployment, but opening it redirected to Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform scaling documentation rather than a usable deployment workflow. The current product naming and deployment procedure are therefore not established here. Confirm the current official documentation before including Google Cloud in a detailed shortlist or comparing its agent lifecycle with the options above.
How do you choose between a managed service and Kubernetes?
Start with the operating model, then test the controls that matter for your workload. A hosted service can reduce the infrastructure your team assembles, while a Kubernetes-centered foundation can align with an existing hybrid or self-managed platform strategy. Neither category alone proves portability, equivalent governance, or a lower total operating burden.
| If your priority is… | Start by evaluating… | Key question |
|---|---|---|
| A documented hosted deployment and agent endpoint | Microsoft Foundry | Do its identity, framework, network, region and cost constraints fit your application? |
| Hybrid AI workloads on an OpenShift-centered platform | Red Hat OpenShift AI / Red Hat AI Enterprise | Are the required components and controls supported in your exact environment? |
| AWS/Kubernetes infrastructure your team can assemble around | Amazon EKS | Who will select and operate the agent runtime, authorization and audit layers? |
| Tanzu’s described combination of harness and centralized controls | VMware Tanzu Platform | Which described or announced capabilities are available in the release you can procure? |
What should a proof of concept test?
Run the same representative agent workflow on each shortlisted platform. This is a buyer evaluation checklist, not a claim that these platforms have been benchmarked against one another.
Quick Recap
- Deploy a version, route traffic to it, roll it back, and confirm what happens to active work.
- Check how the agent receives identity and secrets, and whether model endpoints, tools and external resources can be authorized separately.
- Test runtime and network isolation, policy enforcement, and any human-approval path your workflow requires.
- Trace tool calls, prompts, resource access, errors and usage at the level your operators need.
- Swap models and tools, then assess which code, configuration and state remain portable.
- Measure throughput and cost under your own workload, and identify which networking, runtime, cluster, model-serving and scaling components your team must operate.
