Switch back while the option is available
Google’s general phone instructions are:
- Open the Gemini app on your Android phone.
- Tap Menu, then your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Switch to Google Assistant.
- In the confirmation dialog, tap Switch.
Menu labels can vary by device. If “Switch to Google Assistant” is missing, Google’s instructions do not provide another way to restore mobile Assistant access. The setting is an account-availability issue, not a car-hardware setting. Google’s Gemini instructions

Why the option may disappear
Google announced the transition on August 6, 2026, and said it would start removing Assistant from mobile devices on September 3, 2026. The rollout was expected to take several weeks, so availability may differ between accounts while it is underway; Google has not published an account-by-account schedule. Phone-projected Android Auto and Google built-in are different

A vehicle with Google built-in is a separate case: it has an assistant setting on the car display. What to do if you cannot find the switch
- Check the Gemini app on the phone paired with Android Auto and follow the phone steps above if the option appears.
- If it does not appear, Google’s stated policy is that switching back is unavailable once mobile Assistant access has been removed for your account.
- Do not count on restarting the phone, deleting Gemini, buying an adapter, or changing the head unit to restore Assistant; Google documents this as a phone-assistant availability change, not a hardware fix.
