If Gemini is silent in Android Auto, first check that your phone and vehicle meet Google’s requirements and that Gemini is selected as your digital assistant. Then test the car-screen microphone separately from “Hey Google”: each is a different way to start a request, and a failure with one does not establish that the others are broken. Google’s documentation gives setup and activation guidance, but no single fix for every silent response.
1. Check Android Auto and Gemini requirements
Google says Gemini in Android Auto requires an Android phone running Android 11 or newer with at least 2 GB of RAM, Gemini set as the phone’s digital assistant, and an Android Auto-compatible vehicle. - Confirm the phone is running Android 11 or newer and has at least 2 GB of RAM.

- Check that Gemini is selected as the phone’s digital assistant.

2. Test each way to start Gemini
While parked, try the Android Auto screen microphone first. If it responds, but “Hey Google” does not, focus on the wake-word settings rather than treating the assistant as completely unavailable. Google lists the screen microphone, wake phrase, and supported steering-wheel voice-command button as activation options; the steering-wheel button may need to be pressed and held. - Screen microphone: Tap the microphone on the Android Auto display and make a simple request.
- Wake phrase: “Hey Google” requires both Voice Match and the “Hey Google” setting to be enabled.
- Steering-wheel button: If your vehicle supports it, press and hold its voice-command button.
3. Wait for the activation tone
Start Gemini using one of the activation methods, wait for the tone, and only then speak. Google’s Android Auto voice instructions specify this sequence. Speaking before the tone does not by itself show that Gemini is malfunctioning.

4. Check whether only one task is failing
Try a straightforward request, then compare it with the task that failed. Google lists calling, messaging, finding places, navigation, and music controls among supported in-car tasks. For messaging, use a compatible messaging app; for navigation, make the destination request clear. If general questions work but a request involving one app does not, check that the app is compatible and that you are signed in.

5. Consider whether the request needs a Google Assistant feature
Gemini does not support every feature associated with Google Assistant. If Gemini answers other requests but will not carry out a particular feature you rely on, Google recommends switching back to Google Assistant. That can address a feature gap, but it does not prove that every instance of silence is caused by a missing feature. See Google’s guide to what the Gemini mobile app can do.
6. Keep troubleshooting safe
Make these checks while parked. Google warns that Gemini in Android Auto can hallucinate or present inaccurate information as fact, and says not to rely on it for critical information or safety-related matters while operating a vehicle. Read Google’s Gemini-in-car safety guidance.
