You do not need Kubernetes to run autonomous AI agents. Choose the runtime according to who should own orchestration and saved state, how much execution isolation the agent needs, whether it requires files and shell tools, and whether its workload needs bursty CPU or GPUs. The main alternatives are an application-run loop with the OpenAI Agents SDK, provider-managed progress with the OpenAI Agents API, hosted or container sandboxes, Modal, HashiCorp Nomad, and Amazon ECS.
First decide whether you need an orchestrator or an execution environment
Autonomous agents usually combine a decision loop, tool calls, working memory, and one or more execution environments. Kubernetes is primarily a container orchestration layer: it schedules workloads, restarts them, exposes services, and coordinates infrastructure. It does not automatically provide an agent’s reasoning loop, tool permissions, workspace, or durable task history.

That distinction explains why several alternatives can be better than Kubernetes for an agent project. An application framework can own the loop; a managed agent API can save progress; a sandbox can supply an isolated shell and filesystem; and a scheduler such as Nomad or ECS can run containers without adopting the Kubernetes control plane.
| Option | Who runs orchestration? | Execution isolation | State and resume | Best fit | Operational burden |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| OpenAI Agents API | Provider-managed | Provider runtime | OpenAI saves progress for long-running tasks | Teams that want managed agent execution | Low infrastructure ownership; less control over orchestration boundaries |
| OpenAI Agents SDK | Your application | Trusted local process, Docker, or hosted execution through sandbox clients | Your application controls lifecycle and persistence | Reusable agents, tools, and handoffs with application-level control | Moderate; you own the service and state design |
| Hosted or container sandbox | Your agent service or a provider | Isolated Unix-like environment | Snapshots and resumable state are available in the sandbox model | Coding agents and tasks that manipulate files, packages, ports, or artifacts | Lower than operating a cluster; exact limits depend on provider configuration |
| Modal | Modal-managed serverless platform | Code-defined containers | Application-managed unless a workflow adds persistence | Bursty jobs, code execution, and GPU-backed agents | Provider-managed infrastructure; no Kubernetes, Docker, or AWS account required according to Modal’s introduction |
| HashiCorp Nomad | You operate the scheduler | Container or other supported workload isolation | Your platform and applications own persistence | Portable scheduling across public cloud, private cloud, and bare metal | Higher; you run and maintain the control plane |
| Amazon ECS | AWS manages the cluster servers; you define services and tasks | AWS container execution | Your application and AWS services own persistence | AWS-centered container scheduling | Managed cluster path, with AWS service coupling |

OpenAI Agents API: provider-managed orchestration
What it does
OpenAI positions the Agents API for long-running tasks in which OpenAI manages the agent and saves progress between tasks. Your application submits work and consumes results instead of implementing every scheduling and continuation mechanism itself.
When it is the right replacement
- You want the provider to own the orchestration boundary.
- Tasks may continue for a long time and need saved progress.
- Your team wants to spend engineering effort on agent behavior and tools rather than cluster operations.
Trade-offs
The convenience comes with less control over the underlying orchestration boundary than an application-run loop. Before adopting it, define which events must be visible to your systems, where audit records must live, how cancellation works, and which data your application must persist independently. The API is an orchestration choice; it does not by itself answer every question about running arbitrary shell commands, packages, files, or network services. Add a sandbox when the agent needs those capabilities.
OpenAI Agents SDK: run the loop inside your application
What it does
The Agents SDK is designed for reusable agents, tools, and handoffs while the SDK runs inside your application. This gives your service direct control over routing, authorization, retries, observability, and persistence.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Isolation choices
Its sandbox clients cover three practical levels:
- Trusted local development: the agent executes in the same environment as the application. This is convenient for development and internal tools, but it provides the least isolation.
- Docker isolation: the agent runs in a container boundary that you configure and operate.
- Hosted execution: a provider runs the sandbox, reducing the infrastructure you maintain.
How to design an SDK-based deployment
- Define the agent contract. List tools, inputs, outputs, handoffs, approval points, and the maximum time a run may consume.
- Separate control state from working state. Keep run identifiers, permissions, and business records in your application database; keep temporary files and generated artifacts in the execution environment.
- Choose the sandbox client. Start locally for trusted development, move to Docker when you need a reproducible boundary, or use hosted execution when you do not want to operate that boundary.
- Make continuation explicit. Persist checkpoints, tool results, and artifact references so a restarted application can continue without repeating unsafe side effects.
- Add operational limits. Enforce timeouts, package and network policy, filesystem scope, concurrency limits, and human approval for irreversible actions.
This approach is the best fit when your product needs custom orchestration logic or must integrate agent runs tightly with existing application workflows.
Hosted and container sandboxes: when an agent needs a computer
Capabilities that distinguish a sandbox
OpenAI describes agent sandboxes as isolated Unix-like environments that can provide files, shell commands, packages, ports, snapshots, and resumable state. These capabilities solve an execution problem rather than a cluster-scheduling problem. Use a sandbox when an agent must inspect or modify a repository, install or invoke tools, create files, run a local service, expose a port, generate an artifact, or continue work later.

Hosted sandbox characteristics
The OpenAI-hosted sandbox provides Linux with Python, Node.js, and command-line tools. Its configuration includes container size and network settings, allowing you to match the environment to the workload rather than running every tool inside your main application process.
Sandbox versus Kubernetes
| Question | Sandbox answer | Kubernetes answer |
|---|---|---|
| Does the agent need a shell and filesystem? | Built around that execution model | Requires you to assemble a container image, permissions, volumes, and services |
| Does the task need resumable workspace state? | Snapshots and resumability are part of the described model | Requires your own volume and checkpoint design |
| Who manages the cluster? | Provider or sandbox operator | Your platform team or a managed Kubernetes service |
| What is the primary abstraction? | An isolated work environment | A general-purpose workload scheduler |
A sandbox does not replace a scheduler when you have many independent services, strict placement requirements, or a broader platform fleet. It can, however, remove the need to build those cluster concerns merely to let one agent run tools safely.
Modal: serverless containers for bursty and GPU-backed agents
What Modal provides
Modal describes a serverless cloud for compute-intensive applications. Its documentation includes code-defined container environments, GPU specifications declared in code, and an example of a LangGraph agent sandbox. Modal’s introduction says: “This means you don’t need to mess with Kubernetes, Docker, or even an AWS account.”
Use Modal when
- Agent jobs arrive in bursts and you do not want to keep a cluster sized for peak demand.
- Execution requires GPUs or other specialized compute that should be selected in code.
- You want container-like isolation without operating a Kubernetes control plane or maintaining host infrastructure.
- Your team is comfortable adopting a provider-specific runtime abstraction.
What to verify before committing
Define how your application stores conversation history, checkpoints, uploaded files, and generated artifacts; serverless compute does not automatically make those records durable. Also specify network egress, secrets, startup behavior, maximum run duration, concurrency, and GPU availability for your workload. The cited documentation establishes Modal’s serverless containers and GPU support, but it does not publish a cross-platform cost or latency comparison.
HashiCorp Nomad: portable scheduling you operate
Why teams choose it
HashiCorp describes Nomad as environment-agnostic: “Nomad is agnostic to the environment in which it is run, supporting public and private clouds, as well as bare metal datacenters.” That portability makes Nomad the clearest choice when you need a scheduler but do not want your platform tied to one cloud’s cluster service.

Nomad’s role in an agent platform
Nomad can schedule the agent service, worker containers, tool runners, and supporting APIs. You still need to design the agent loop, authorization, workspace persistence, checkpoints, and observability. A Nomad deployment therefore replaces Kubernetes as the scheduler; it does not replace an agent framework or sandbox policy.

Nomad is self-hosted from the perspective of your organization. Plan for control-plane availability, client capacity, upgrades, secrets, service discovery, logging, and recovery procedures. Choose it when portability and control justify that operational ownership. If your priority is avoiding scheduler operations altogether, a managed API, hosted sandbox, Modal, or ECS may be a better fit.
Amazon ECS: the AWS-managed container path
What it is
HashiCorp’s comparison identifies Amazon ECS as a cluster manager and notes that Amazon manages its servers. ECS is therefore the managed AWS route for teams that want container scheduling integrated with AWS services.
When ECS fits an autonomous agent
- Your organization already standardizes on AWS networking, identity, logging, registries, and deployment pipelines.
- The agent is packaged as one or more containers and does not require a specialized sandbox abstraction.
- You want managed server infrastructure rather than operating a scheduler control plane yourself.
Trade-off: convenience versus portability
ECS reduces infrastructure ownership compared with self-hosted Nomad, but it increases dependence on AWS-specific service definitions, permissions, networking, and operational tooling. Keep the agent’s state and tool interfaces portable if you may move clouds later; isolate ECS-specific configuration at the deployment layer.

Use the Agents SDK when
Your application must own the loop, tool policy, handoffs, persistence, and integration with business systems. Pair it with a local, Docker, or hosted sandbox according to your isolation requirements.
Use a hosted sandbox when
The agent behaves like an operator at a computer: it needs files, commands, packages, ports, snapshots, or resumable workspaces. This is often the most direct solution for coding and artifact-producing agents.
Use Modal when
You need code-defined serverless containers, bursty execution, or GPU-backed workloads and prefer not to manage Kubernetes, Docker, or an AWS account.
Use Nomad when
You need a portable scheduler across public cloud, private cloud, and bare metal and are willing to operate the control plane.
Use ECS when
Your infrastructure is already AWS-centered and managed container scheduling is more valuable than cloud neutrality.
Best Value
A practical architecture for running agents without Kubernetes
- Classify the workload. Decide whether the agent is a short API request, a long-running workflow, a tool-using coding task, a recurring worker, or a GPU-intensive job.
- Assign orchestration ownership. Pick provider-managed orchestration, an application-run SDK loop, or a scheduler such as Nomad or ECS.
- Choose the execution boundary. Use a trusted process only for controlled development; use Docker or a hosted sandbox for untrusted or tool-heavy work.
- Design state separately. Store durable business state, run metadata, checkpoints, and artifact references outside ephemeral compute unless the selected runtime explicitly provides the required persistence.
- Define permissions before tools. Limit filesystem paths, package installation, network access, credentials, ports, and destructive operations.
- Plan failure recovery. Decide what happens after a timeout, worker loss, partial tool execution, expired credentials, or a failed external API call. Make retries idempotent where possible.
- Measure your own workload. Record completion time, failure rate, queue delay, compute consumption, and operator effort under representative tasks. No authoritative cross-platform benchmark is established by the cited documentation.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling a sandbox a scheduler
A sandbox gives an agent an isolated workspace; it does not automatically provide fleet-wide placement, service rollout, or cluster autoscaling. Add a scheduler only when those requirements exist.
Assuming managed orchestration means managed data
Provider-managed progress or serverless execution does not eliminate the need to define retention, access control, backups, and deletion for conversations, files, credentials, and artifacts.
Running untrusted tools in the application process
A trusted local process is suitable for controlled development, not for arbitrary code or user-supplied instructions. Move tool execution into Docker or a hosted sandbox and restrict network and filesystem access.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choosing GPUs before proving the workload needs them
GPU support matters for GPU-backed inference and compute-heavy jobs, but many tool-calling agents are primarily waiting on external services. Profile the actual workload before selecting a GPU runtime.
Ignoring portability costs
Nomad emphasizes portability; ECS and other provider-managed services optimize for integration with their surrounding cloud. Keep agent logic, tool schemas, and durable state interfaces separate from deployment-specific configuration.
What the available documentation does—and does not—establish
The cited official documentation establishes architectural capabilities: provider-managed versus application-managed orchestration, sandbox features, Modal’s serverless containers and GPU configuration, Nomad’s environment-agnostic positioning, and ECS’s managed-server model. It does not provide a controlled comparison of price, latency, throughput, reliability, market adoption, or performance across these options. Select a runtime using your security, state, compute, portability, and operations requirements, then validate the choice with measurements from your own agent workloads.
