There is no universal replacement for JPM Coin. The credible alternatives are tokenized deposits issued by other banks or shared networks, stablecoins for narrowly defined corridors, wholesale central-bank digital currency (CBDC) platforms, and public-private unified-ledger projects. The right choice depends on the settlement claim, legal finality, currencies and counterparties in your corridor, liquidity, privacy and compliance requirements, and whether the rail is actually available to your institution.
JPM Coin is a single-bank, bank-issued deposit token. It can support cross-border payments, intraday liquidity transfers, on-chain collateral and programmable payment execution, but it represents one commercial bank’s liability. Alternatives can broaden access or change the form of money used for settlement, yet most remain pilots, minimum viable products or experiments rather than generally available replacements.

What JPM Coin is—and what an alternative must change
J.P. Morgan describes JPM Coin as “a bank-issued deposit token—not a cryptocurrency or a stablecoin.” In practical terms, an eligible participant receives a digital representation of a claim on the issuing bank. The token can move on the bank’s network and trigger programmed actions, but it is not central-bank money and it is not an open, privately issued stablecoin.
The bank lists four institutional use cases: cross-border payments, intraday liquidity transfers, on-chain collateral posting and programmable payment execution. Those capabilities make JPM Coin a commercial benchmark for institutions already connected to the issuing bank. They do not make it a neutral, multi-bank settlement layer.

When evaluating an alternative, start with the liability behind the token rather than the blockchain label. Ask who owes the holder money, whether redemption at par is a legal right, when settlement becomes final, which currencies and counterparties are reachable, and which regulator governs the arrangement. A technically fast transfer with uncertain redemption or limited legal finality may be less useful than a slower but established payment rail.
The main alternatives at a glance
| Alternative family | Settlement claim | What it can improve over a single-bank token | Key limitations | Maturity described by official sources |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tokenized deposits on another bank or shared network | Commercial-bank deposit liability, issued by one bank or several participating banks | Potentially wider bank and currency reach, shared governance and interoperability | Still depends on participating banks, legal agreements, liquidity and interoperability; each issuer’s credit and redemption terms matter | Varies by network; no single standard or universal availability |
| Wholesale CBDC and multi-CBDC platforms | Direct or mediated claim on central-bank money for eligible institutions | Central-bank settlement asset, possible atomic payment-versus-payment (PvP) and delivery-versus-payment (DvP), and multi-currency designs | Access is restricted, governance is international, and many projects are pilots or proofs of concept | mBridge reached minimum viable product stage in mid-2024; current access and status require confirmation. Jura is an earlier experiment; Mariana is experimental |
| Stablecoins | Private issuer’s redemption promise, backed by reserves or other assets under the relevant arrangement | Open-network transferability and potential foreign-currency liquidity or composability | Reserve, redemption, licensing, sanctions, chain-governance, liquidity and counterparty risks; not equivalent to deposits or central-bank money | Use is corridor- and jurisdiction-specific; a BIS 2024 survey found only one respondent using stablecoins as a settlement asset |
| Unified-ledger and public-private programmable platforms | Tokenized commercial-bank deposits combined with tokenized wholesale central-bank money | Shared programmable core, broader interoperability and a common venue for payment, settlement and monitoring | Requires new governance, legal frameworks, technical standards, privacy controls and operating responsibilities | Project Agorá and related BIS work are investigations or design work, not a generally available replacement |
No official source in the available material provides a directly comparable cost, speed, transaction-volume or availability figure for all of these families. Do not treat a pilot’s demonstration time or a marketing claim as a cross-platform benchmark.
Wholesale CBDC and multi-CBDC platforms
Project mBridge: a shared multi-CBDC platform
The Bank for International Settlements describes Project mBridge as a distributed-ledger platform shared by participating central banks and commercial banks, designed to enable instant cross-border payments and settlement. Its model addresses a structural limitation of a single-bank token: participating institutions can settle using central-bank liabilities across more than one jurisdiction, subject to the platform’s eligibility rules and governance.
The project reached minimum viable product stage in mid-2024 according to the BIS project description. “MVP” does not mean that any institution can connect on demand or that every currency corridor is live. Before relying on mBridge, confirm the current operator, participating central banks, supported currencies, onboarding criteria, legal treatment of finality, settlement hours, liquidity arrangements and operational-recovery procedures.
Why a wholesale CBDC can be attractive
- Settlement asset: central-bank money can reduce the commercial-bank issuer risk associated with a deposit token, although the exact legal claim depends on the platform and jurisdiction.
- Multi-currency reach: a shared platform can support transactions between participating monetary areas without forcing every participant to hold a token issued by one commercial bank.
- Atomic settlement: a platform can be designed so that both legs of an FX trade settle together, reducing principal risk when payment-versus-payment is implemented.
- Institutional controls: permissioned access can align the network with licensing, AML, sanctions and data-governance requirements.
What it does not solve automatically
A multi-CBDC platform does not remove the need for liquidity in each currency, an agreed FX mechanism, participant credit controls, legal recognition of digital settlement, or reliable connections to existing payment and securities systems. It can also introduce dependencies on several central banks and a shared operating body. A bank that cannot meet the eligibility rules or obtain local regulatory approval may receive no practical benefit from the technology.
Lessons from Project Jura
Project Jura was an earlier public-private experiment involving the Banque de France, the BIS Innovation Hub, the Swiss National Bank and an industry consortium. Its report described tokenized-asset and foreign-exchange trades settling through payment-versus-payment and delivery-versus-payment mechanisms.

Jura is best used as a design reference, not as a production rail. Its important contribution is the settlement pattern: a currency leg and an asset leg can be coordinated so that one side is not irrevocably delivered while the other remains unpaid. Institutions considering a tokenized-deposit or CBDC network should ask whether the design supports the same atomicity, what happens when one leg fails, and which legal event constitutes final settlement.
Project Mariana: experimental cross-border FX
Project Mariana tested cross-border trading and settlement of hypothetical euro, Singapore-dollar and Swiss-franc wholesale CBDCs using automated-market-maker concepts. The BIS describes the work as experimental. It does not indicate that the participating central banks intend to issue CBDCs, and it does not endorse decentralized finance.
The project is relevant where an institution is considering automated liquidity or pricing for multi-currency settlement. An automated-market-maker design could change how liquidity is quoted and rebalanced, but it also raises questions about pool governance, loss allocation, market quality, oracle or pricing inputs, and the legal status of an automated execution rule. Those questions must be answered in the target jurisdiction before the mechanism is used for real funds.
The final Project Mariana report notes that foreign exchange is the world’s largest financial market, trading about $7.5 trillion a day. That figure describes the scale of the market, not the volume, cost or speed of Mariana itself.
Unified ledgers and tokenized-deposit networks
Project Agorá
In an announcement dated 3 April 2024, the Banque de France said Project Agorá would investigate how tokenized commercial-bank deposits could be integrated with tokenized wholesale central-bank money in a public-private programmable core financial platform. The concept keeps the commercial-bank relationship that institutions understand while adding a shared settlement layer for central-bank money.

For a bank comparing Agorá-style architecture with JPM Coin, the distinction is network scope. JPM Coin represents one bank’s deposit liability. A unified platform aims to let multiple commercial-bank deposits interact with tokenized central-bank money under common rules. That could support broader counterparties and more currencies, but it also creates shared dependencies: governance, data standards, smart-contract controls, legal documentation, cybersecurity, incident response and allocation of operating costs.

The broader BIS unified-ledger model
A 2025 BIS discussion of the monetary system describes a platform combining tokenized central-bank money and commercial-bank money for payment instructions, settlement and post-transaction monitoring. It presents tokenized central-bank reserves, deposits and government securities as possible building blocks of a next-generation financial system.
This model can combine payment, securities and compliance data in one programmable environment. It does not establish that a particular platform is live, that every asset is tokenized, or that a bank can open an account and begin settling immediately. Treat the model as an architectural direction unless an operator publishes production rules, participant terms and regulatory approvals.
Stablecoins: useful in selected corridors, not a like-for-like substitute
Stablecoins are privately issued digital assets intended to maintain a reference value, usually through reserves or other support. They can offer open-network transferability, access to foreign-currency liquidity and composability with other applications. Those features may help in a corridor where banking hours, correspondent access or local market depth are limited.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThey are not equivalent to a bank deposit token or central-bank money. The holder’s protection depends on the issuer’s reserve assets, redemption process, legal terms, licensing, insolvency treatment and operational controls. A stablecoin may also expose an institution to chain governance, validator or infrastructure outages, sanctions-screening obligations, wallet controls and liquidity fragmentation.
The BIS 2024 survey reported that live-issued tokenized assets were mostly bought or sold with tokenized central-bank money, described as wholesale CBDC. Only one respondent indicated that stablecoins were used as a settlement asset. This does not prohibit stablecoin settlement; it shows that official respondents did not identify it as the dominant settlement asset in that survey.
Stablecoin due diligence before a production decision
- Reserve quality and segregation: identify the assets backing the token, where they are held, who audits or attests to them, and what happens in an issuer failure.
- Redemption: establish whether your institution can redeem directly at par, in which currency, during which hours and subject to which minimums or eligibility rules.
- Legal and regulatory status: obtain jurisdiction-specific advice on licensing, custody, settlement finality, insolvency and reporting.
- Compliance: test sanctions screening, transaction monitoring, travel-rule or equivalent data requirements, address screening and freeze or recovery procedures.
- Network resilience: assess chain governance, upgrade authority, congestion, reorganization risk, outages, key management and recovery time.
- Liquidity: verify two-way market depth in the exact corridor and stress the cost of converting back to bank money during a volatile period.
How to compare the options
Use the following questions in order. A network that fails an early legal or access test should not advance merely because it offers attractive programmability.

1. Identify the settlement claim
Classify the asset as a commercial-bank deposit, central-bank money or a private stablecoin claim. Record the issuer, governing law, redemption route, insolvency treatment and whether the claim is direct or mediated through an intermediary.

3. Map corridor and participant coverage
List the origin and destination currencies, settlement accounts, eligible banks, non-bank institutions, central-bank participants, operating hours and local licensing requirements. “Multi-currency” on a slide does not prove that your two currencies and counterparties are supported.
4. Test liquidity and FX execution
Measure available two-way liquidity, conversion venues, cut-off times, collateral rules and the cost of moving between tokenized money and conventional accounts. For an automated-market-maker design, define who supplies liquidity and who bears losses or pricing errors.
5. Review governance and permissioning
Document who can mint, burn, pause, reverse, upgrade or censor transactions; how new participants are admitted; how disputes are handled; and which body can change the protocol. Shared governance can reduce dependence on one bank while adding coordination and accountability requirements.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling every digital dollar or euro a stablecoin: identify the issuer and liability. A bank deposit token, wholesale CBDC and private stablecoin have different protections.
- Confusing an experiment with a product: a successful demonstration does not establish onboarding, support, legal finality or continuous operation.
- Comparing headline speed without settlement conditions: include minting, redemption, FX conversion, compliance holds, cut-offs and reconciliation, not just ledger confirmation time.
- Ignoring the off-chain boundary: a token may settle instantly while the institution’s bank account, securities custodian or local payment system settles later.
- Assuming atomicity: verify that PvP or DvP is enforced by the rulebook and code, including default and outage scenarios.
- Underestimating governance: document who can change balances, contracts, access rights and privacy settings, and how those actions are audited.
- Treating liquidity as a technical feature: a token is not useful for FX settlement if there is no dependable two-way market in your corridor.
What a production pilot should prove
Before moving real institutional value, run a controlled pilot with the exact currencies, counterparties and compliance constraints intended for production. The pilot should demonstrate:
- Onboarding and permissioning for every participant type.
- Minting, transfer, redemption and reconciliation against conventional bank records.
- Legal finality, PvP and DvP behavior during successful, rejected, delayed and failed transactions.
- FX liquidity, collateral and intraday funding under normal and stressed conditions.
- AML, sanctions, privacy and data-retention controls, including a blocked or frozen address scenario where applicable.
- Key rotation, outage recovery, ledger reconciliation and incident communications.
- Operational support, audit evidence, change management and exit or migration procedures.
Use the pilot’s results to decide whether the rail complements JPM Coin, replaces it in a defined corridor, or is unsuitable for production. A multi-rail strategy is often more realistic than forcing one instrument to cover every currency, counterparty and settlement purpose.
Bottom line for institutional treasuries
Choose the settlement claim first, then the network. Tokenized deposits are the closest conceptual alternative to JPM Coin but can reproduce single-issuer and interoperability constraints unless they operate on a genuinely shared network. Wholesale CBDC platforms offer a central-bank settlement foundation and potentially atomic multi-currency settlement, but access and production status remain project-specific. Stablecoins can be valuable for selected corridors and open-network use cases, provided reserve, redemption, compliance and liquidity risks are acceptable. Unified-ledger projects promise broader programmability by combining commercial-bank deposits with wholesale central-bank money, but they are still being investigated and standardized.
For any candidate, require current evidence of participant eligibility, legal finality, liquidity, governance, privacy and operational resilience. On the available official descriptions, JPM Coin is the commercial benchmark; mBridge is an MVP-stage multi-CBDC project whose current access must be checked; Agorá is an investigation into a public-private programmable platform; and Jura and Mariana are experimental projects rather than generally available settlement services.
