If you want a Windows PC to lock when you walk away without relying on Bluetooth, check whether it supports Windows 11 Presence Sensing. If it does not, Windows Dynamic Lock and third-party Bluetooth utilities can help, but they are not instant or guaranteed. Keep ordinary idle auto-lock enabled as your baseline: proximity features are an extra safeguard, not a substitute for locking an active device.
Which automatic locking option should you use?
The right choice depends on what your computer supports and whether you want a proximity trigger or simply a reliable lock after inactivity. These options are not interchangeable: some lock on departure, some wait for inactivity, and Apple’s documented automatic-unlock feature does not lock a device when you leave.

| Option | What it does | Dependencies and limits | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 Presence Sensing | Can turn off the screen when you leave and wake the device when you approach. | Requires a compatible PC and the relevant settings; availability varies by region and hardware. | Windows 11 users whose PC offers the presence-sensing controls. |
| Windows Dynamic Lock | Locks a Windows 10 or 11 PC when the paired phone’s Bluetooth signal weakens and the PC is idle. | Requires Bluetooth pairing and only locks when both conditions are met. Signal behavior varies with the environment. | People who carry a paired phone and want a built-in Bluetooth fallback. |
| Third-party BLE utility, such as SignalLock | Can monitor a trusted Bluetooth Low Energy device and lock Windows after an away condition or delay. | Requires BLE-capable hardware, setup, and testing. SignalLock’s project documentation warns that tracking stock iPhones reliably can be difficult. | Users who want configurable Bluetooth behavior and are willing to assess a third-party app. |
| Standard idle auto-lock | Locks after a configured period without user activity. | Does not detect that you have left, so there may be a delay before it locks. | Everyone, as the basic protection that complements proximity features. |
| Apple automatic unlock | Allows certain supported Apple devices to unlock one another under defined conditions. | Requires eligible device pairings and setup; it is an unlock feature, not a general leave-to-lock option. | Apple users considering ecosystem convenience, not a replacement for automatic locking. |
Compare options by operating-system support, sensor or Bluetooth requirements, whether the trigger locks or unlocks, configuration needs, delay behavior, and what happens if the signal or sensor is unavailable. There is no basis here for ranking lock speed or reliability across the options.
Use Windows 11 Presence Sensing if your PC supports it
Presence Sensing is the main non-Bluetooth alternative for Windows PCs covered here. On compatible hardware, Windows 11 can turn off the screen when you leave and wake the device when you approach. The available behavior depends on the PC; not every Windows 11 computer offers the feature.

Microsoft notes that availability varies by region and that some capabilities require specific hardware. If the controls do not appear, the device may not support the feature; do not assume a software update alone will add compatible presence-sensing hardware. See Microsoft’s Presence Sensing settings guidance.
Understand what Windows Dynamic Lock can and cannot do
Dynamic Lock uses the Bluetooth connection to a paired phone as a sign that you may have left. Microsoft supports the feature on Windows 10 and Windows 11, but it does not lock immediately just because the phone moves away. Microsoft states that “the dynamic lock feature only locks the device if the Bluetooth signal falls and the system is idle.” In other words, if someone reaches an active PC before it becomes idle and the signal drops below the threshold, Dynamic Lock may not have locked it yet.

Set it up by pairing your phone with the PC over Bluetooth, then opening Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and enabling Dynamic Lock (the exact wording can vary by Windows version). Microsoft’s Dynamic Lock policy documentation describes default RSSI policy values of rssiMin="-10" and rssiMaxDelta="-10". These are configuration values, not a distance estimate: Bluetooth signal readings change with environmental conditions. Microsoft recommends using the defaults and testing policy values in the deployment environment rather than treating them as a universal range.

Dynamic Lock is an additional barrier, not a replacement for manual locking or an ordinary idle timeout. Microsoft makes that distinction in its Dynamic Lock guidance.

Consider a third-party BLE utility only if you are comfortable testing it
SignalLock is a Windows utility whose project documentation describes scanning BLE advertisements, smoothing signal-strength readings, applying a configurable away delay, and invoking the Windows workstation-lock function. The project lists Windows 10 version 1809 or newer, Windows 11, and BLE-capable hardware as requirements.
Those are the project’s own claims, not independent test results. Its repository also says that stock iPhones rotate Bluetooth advertising addresses, which can make reliable tracking difficult, and warns that an unsigned executable may trigger a SmartScreen warning. Review the project and assess whether its setup and trust requirements suit your device before relying on it. The documentation is available in the SignalLock repository.

Keep ordinary idle auto-lock as your baseline
An idle timeout does not know that you have walked away, but it provides a fallback when a proximity signal or sensor fails, or when you leave the device without carrying the paired phone. Choose a timeout that balances convenience with the risk of someone reaching an unattended, unlocked device, and confirm the setting is enabled.

NIST identifies unattended unlocked mobile devices as a security and privacy risk and lists maximum-idle-time locking and locking after proximity loss among possible countermeasures. Its catalogue is guidance, not a current measurement of how often attacks occur. See the NIST Mobile Threat Catalogue.
Do not mistake trusted-device unlocking for leave-to-lock
Apple documents automatic unlocking between certain supported Apple devices. For the documented Mac-and-Apple-Watch relationship, both devices must use the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication, the relationship must be enabled, and the watch must be unlocked and nearby—about 2–3 metres or less. This is an ecosystem-specific way to unlock a Mac, not a general method for locking a device when you walk away. Apple’s conditions are described in its platform security documentation.
Trusted Bluetooth or Wi-Fi devices that keep a device unlocked also have a different security model from proximity-triggered locking. NIST’s Android Smart Lock catalogue entry notes a spoofing risk for trusted devices and points to device-management policies and safer pairing practices as mitigations. Do not treat “stay unlocked while a trusted device is nearby” as equivalent protection to locking when you leave; see the NIST Mobile Threat Catalogue.
