To block a social media app, use Screen Time on an iPhone or Android’s parental controls; to manage a child’s Android phone remotely, use Family Link. Website blocking is a separate setting: iPhone Screen Time can block chosen sites, while Android’s built-in web filter is limited to explicit content in supported browsers and providers—not a general social-media website blacklist. The right steps depend on whether you are managing your own phone or a supervised child’s device.
Choose the control that matches what you want to block

Block an app or website on an iPhone
For a child in Family Sharing
On a parent or guardian’s Apple device, open Settings → Family → [child’s name] → Apps & Websites. Apple recommends that a child in a family group use an individual Apple Account. Under Restrictions, choose the web-filtering approach that fits: Limit Adult Websites or Approved Websites Only/Ask to Browse. To block a particular item, select the app or website in Apps & Websites, choose Block App or Block Website, then confirm. The app stays installed; Apple says a blocked app appears dimmed on the Home Screen rather than being deleted.

Screen Time also offers schedules and Time Allowances. A schedule can vary by day or routine; a Time Allowance sets a daily budget for app categories and can be adjusted for a category such as social media. Use these when the goal is to reduce time rather than prevent access to one named app or site. Apple announced the updated Screen Time experience on September 14, 2026; its use requires all relevant devices in the Family Sharing group to run the listed releases—iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and/or visionOS 27. If the group cannot update every relevant device, Apple says previous controls remain usable. Features can vary by region, language, age, and model. Details are in Apple’s announcement.

For your own iPhone
Screen Time’s Apps & Websites controls can block an app or website and can be changed later. Apple’s current detailed path is documented for a child’s account; labels and available controls for an adult’s own device can vary by release and setup. If you are setting limits for yourself, look in Settings for Screen Time and its Apps & Websites controls rather than following Family Sharing steps meant for a child.
Block an app or filter websites on Android
Use Android’s built-in parental controls
Open Settings → Parental controls → App limits, select an app, and set its time allowance. To block an app, select it under App limits and switch off Allow app. Google says the blocked app is hidden from All apps. Avoid blocking the Google app unless you understand the effect: Google cautions that Android and other apps may not function as intended. See Google’s Android parental-control instructions.

Understand Android’s web filter limits
Android’s documented web-content filters target explicit websites and search results. They require supported software, including Google app 16.42 or later, Chrome 140.0.7332.0 or later, Android System WebView 139 or later, or another web provider that integrates with the feature. This is not a documented way to block chosen social-media domains across the phone. Google warns that explicit content may still appear in other apps, devices, or browsers; when the explicit-site filter is enabled, Chrome sites are sent to Google for checking.

Manage a child’s Android phone with Family Link
Family Link is for a supervised child account, not the same setup as limits someone places on their own phone. Google lists Android 6.0 or later for the child’s Android device. The parent’s Family Link app can run on Android 6.0 or later, iOS 16 or later, or supported Chromebook devices, and parent and child must live in the same country. Some apps cannot be blocked because supervision or device operation depends on them. Requirements are listed in Google’s Family Link guide.

- In the parent’s Family Link app, select the child.
- Open Screen time → Time limits → App limits.
- Choose the app and change its status to Blocked.
Google says the change usually takes about five minutes or applies when the device reconnects to the internet. The block applies to the child’s Android devices or Chromebooks.

- Blocking an app targets that installed app; it is not the same as blocking the service’s website.
- Blocking a website affects browsing through the controls and browsers covered by that setting. It does not establish that the same service is blocked inside every app.
- Filtering explicit content is not a general social-media blocklist, especially on Android, where Google limits the web filter to supported providers and software versions.
- Parental supervision enables remote family management, but eligibility and app exceptions apply.
- Access controls are not a guarantee that every route to content is blocked or that behavior will change; the platform documentation does not promise either outcome.
Before setting a restriction, check whether the phone is an iPhone or Android, whether you need to block an app or a web address, whether a child account is supervised, and whether the relevant OS and browser/provider are supported.
