Check two separate things before using a crypto payment app: whether it accepts customers who live in your country, and whether the exact company operating it is currently authorized or registered for the services you plan to use. Find the company name in the app’s legal disclosures, confirm country eligibility in its current terms, then verify the company and its permitted activities in the relevant regulator’s official register.
Why app-store availability is not enough
An app appearing in your app store, opening on your device, or being promoted in your country does not establish that its operator may serve you there. Nor does a provider’s authorization automatically cover every feature in its app. Availability depends on the provider’s country coverage and onboarding terms; regulatory status depends on the legal entity, jurisdiction, current status, and activities listed by the regulator.

Check both questions independently, and use official regulator records rather than relying on a badge, an old screenshot, or the provider’s marketing alone.
How to verify an app before you use it
- Find the legal entity. Open the app’s legal notice, terms, general conditions, or account disclosures. Record the exact company name, its registered jurisdiction, and any regulator or authorization details. The company name may differ from the app’s brand. Luxembourg’s CSSF advises consumers to look for the provider’s official name and authorizations in its legal notice or terms: CSSF consumer notice.
- Check whether it serves your country. Review the provider’s current country list, terms, and onboarding disclosures for your country of residence and intended use. Check the restrictions that apply to the specific feature you want—such as payments, transfers, exchange, or custody. Website access or an app-store listing is not proof that you are eligible to open or use an account.
- Search the appropriate official register. Identify the regulator that oversees the service in your country, then search its register using the exact legal entity name. Depending on the country, there may also be a regional register. For example, EU readers should check the ESMA register and the relevant national regulator’s register; CSSF and the Central Bank of Ireland direct consumers to both levels of verification. Use the official register for your jurisdiction rather than assuming one country’s result applies elsewhere.
- Match the entity and the activity. Confirm that the register entry refers to the same legal company—not merely a similarly named brand, group company, or parent—and check which services it is authorized to provide. Permissions can distinguish among activities such as transfer, exchange, trading, or custody. Pakistan’s PVARA says a licence authorizes only the service categories specified in it: PVARA licensing information.
- Read the status, not just the listing. Establish whether the record shows a current full authorization, a registration, an application, or a preliminary approval. These statuses are not interchangeable. A listing by itself does not necessarily mean the provider may already serve customers.
- Check the record close to use. Authorization and country terms can change. Use the live register near the time you plan to sign up or fund the account, rather than relying on an old claim or saved image.
- Resolve a mismatch before funding. If the company is hard to identify, the register entry does not match, the service category is absent, or the status is unclear, ask the provider for its legal entity, regulator, authorization or registration number, and permitted services. Verify the answer directly with the regulator before sending money or crypto.
What to check in official registers
European Union
For EU crypto-asset services, check the ESMA register and the relevant national regulator’s register. The CSSF’s July 2026 notice says the MiCA transition period ended on 1 July 2026 and providers may no longer offer crypto-asset services in the EU without CASP authorization: CSSF: MiCA transition period ended. The Central Bank of Ireland also directs consumers to verify MiCAR authorization through ESMA and warns that unauthorized providers do not confer MiCAR safeguards: Central Bank of Ireland consumer warning. These are EU rules and examples; they do not establish availability or authorization elsewhere.

Australia
AUSTRAC’s public VASP register is intended to let the public check whether a virtual asset service provider is registered with AUSTRAC. Its notice, published 30 June 2026, describes covered activities including exchange, safekeeping, and certain transfers: AUSTRAC VASP register announcement. AUSTRAC says registrations can be suspended or cancelled, so check the current entry. Registration with AUSTRAC should not be described as a broader prudential or consumer-protection licence.
Pakistan
PVARA says it maintains an up-to-date public register and requires licensees to publish their legal name, licence number, and authorized service categories. Its 2026 licensing FAQ distinguishes a no-objection certificate (NOC), which is preliminary approval, from a subsequent VASP licence. Check that the provider holds the relevant licence and that the activity you want appears in its permitted categories: PVARA licensing information and FAQ.

Dubai
VARA’s public register includes fully licensed firms as well as entities with in-principle approval (IPA). VARA says an IPA holder cannot begin operations, conduct virtual-asset activities, or serve clients until it receives a full VASP licence: VARA public register. Check that the provider has a full licence for the activity you need. VARA regulates Dubai’s mainland and free zones except the Dubai International Financial Centre, so confirm which jurisdiction applies to the service.

|---|---|
| Legal entity | The exact company named in legal disclosures and the matching register entry. |
| Country and regulator | The country where the service is offered and the regulator or regulators responsible for the relevant framework. |
| Current status | Whether the entry shows full authorization, registration, or a preliminary status such as an IPA or NOC. |
| Permitted activity | Whether the listed permission covers your intended use, such as payments or transfers, exchange, trading, or custody. |
| Country eligibility | Whether current provider terms and onboarding disclosures allow residents of your country to use that feature. |
| Practical account terms | Supported assets and payment methods, fees and limits, withdrawals, account access, and security controls, verified in current provider terms. |
Regulatory status answers a limited question about the provider and specified activities under a particular framework. It does not establish that every token is supported, that a specific payment method works for you, or that fees, withdrawal rules, and account controls suit your needs.

A regulator entry can help establish that a named entity has a particular status for specified activities in a particular jurisdiction. It is not a guarantee that a crypto-asset or service is risk-free, that an investment will perform well, or that you will avoid operational problems. EU supervisory authorities warn that protections may be limited depending on the crypto-asset and service, and advise consumers to understand the service and secure their wallets: EU supervisory authorities’ consumer warning.
