1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe best alternatives to an AI-powered caregiver-training app are a structured evidence-informed course, live or recorded classes, a facilitated peer group, professional counseling or care navigation, and a vetted local program. These options add qualified human judgment, accountability and referral routes that a chatbot cannot provide. Use planning and safety technology as a supplement for coordination or short breaks—not as a replacement for clinical advice.
The right combination depends on the care recipient’s condition, the caregiver’s immediate safety concerns, available time, location, language and budget. Start with the highest-risk skill gap, choose a qualified human or evidence-informed program, add moderated peer support, then add optional technology.

Why caregivers need more than one training format
Family caregiving is often long-term, home-based and physically demanding. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported in 2024 that about 80% of adults with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias receive care at home. More than 11 million U.S. adults provide unpaid care for someone with dementia, and in 2023 they supplied about 18.4 billion hours of care. Nearly one in three family caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias has provided care for four years or more.

Someone newly managing a diagnosis may need a sequenced introduction. A caregiver facing aggression, wandering or medication problems may need a clinician’s guidance quickly. A person working shifts may require recordings, while an isolated caregiver may benefit most from a moderated group and a local referral. No single format is ideal for all of these situations.

AI tools can explain general concepts or generate reminders, but they cannot examine a person, verify a changing symptom, observe a transfer technique or take responsibility for a safety decision. Human-led and evidence-informed options are therefore the foundation; technology can make the foundation easier to use.

1. Take a structured, evidence-informed course
Dementia Dialogues
The CDC describes Dementia Dialogues as “a free, 5-module, evidence-informed nationally registered training course.” It covers signs and symptoms of dementia, communication barriers and strategies, creative problem-solving, and management of behavioral and emotional challenges. The defined sequence is useful when open-ended chatbot answers leave a caregiver unsure what to learn next.
A course works best when the caregiver treats each module as a skill-building session rather than background reading. Keep a short list of situations that are difficult at home, note which lesson addresses each one, and discuss unresolved safety or medical questions with a clinician. A general course can teach communication and problem-solving principles, but it does not replace diagnosis, medication review or an individualized care plan.
How to judge another course
- Look for a named curriculum, learning objectives and an update or review date.
- Check whether instructors have relevant clinical, social-work or dementia-care qualifications.
- Confirm that examples match the care recipient’s condition and the caregiver’s cultural and language needs.
- Find out whether there is a completion record, practice activity, question period or referral path when a problem exceeds the course’s scope.
2. Use live or recorded education
Family Caregiver Alliance says, “Caregiver education is increasingly available through webinars, recorded video, and podcasts you can watch or listen to on your own schedule.” Its resources include webinars, recorded video, the Caregiver College video series and caregiving podcasts.
Choose live sessions when accountability matters
Live webinars let caregivers ask about a general scenario, hear questions from other families and establish a regular learning appointment. They are particularly useful when a caregiver is likely to postpone self-paced study. Before registering, check the presenter’s qualifications, the session’s publication or update date, accessibility features, language availability and whether the content is specific to the diagnosis or care task.

Choose recordings when schedules are unpredictable
Recorded sessions suit shift workers and caregivers whose days change without warning. Pause to write down a question, replay a demonstration and share the relevant segment with another family member. Confirm that the recording is still current; guidance about services, eligibility and technology can change even when the underlying caregiving principle remains useful.
Use podcasts as reinforcement, not triage
Audio can turn a commute or household task into study time. It is poor at handling an urgent, individualized problem because a listener cannot receive an immediate assessment. Pair a podcast with a clinician, social worker or care navigator for symptoms, falls, medication concerns or rapid changes in behavior.
3. Join a facilitated peer-support group
A moderated group supplies something a course cannot: sustained contact with people who understand the daily work. Members can share routines, emotional coping strategies and local knowledge about services. A facilitator can also identify when a discussion has moved beyond peer experience.
Questions to ask before joining
- What is the group’s content and focus: dementia, a particular diagnosis, spouses, adult children or another population?
- What should a new member expect at the first meeting, and how are discussions kept confidential?
- What training does the facilitator have?
- How does the group handle medical questions, crisis situations and disagreements?
- Is there a referral route to a clinician, social worker or local service?
AARP offers free live virtual caregiver support groups and a private Family Caregivers Discussion Group. “Free” describes those AARP offerings; other groups may charge, require membership or be sponsored by a health system. Confirm the terms before sharing personal information.
Set boundaries around advice
Peer stories are useful for generating questions, not for changing a prescription or deciding whether a new symptom is safe to observe. Do not post identifying health information in an open forum. When a member reports an immediate danger, severe distress or a sudden medical change, the appropriate next step is professional or emergency help rather than more discussion.
4. Get professional counseling, care navigation or clinical education
Professional support is the strongest alternative when caregiving involves several services, family conflict, burnout or behavior that is difficult to interpret. The CDC’s public-health strategy includes caregiver education and skills training, telephone counseling by social workers, individual or family counseling and peer support among enhanced services.

What a counselor or navigator can add
- Individual assessment: A trained professional can ask about the household, caregiver capacity, symptoms and available supports rather than supplying a generic answer.
- Service coordination: A navigator can help organize appointments, benefits, transportation, adult-day services, respite and community resources.
- Family communication: Individual or family counseling can clarify roles, boundaries and decisions when relatives disagree.
- Escalation: A professional can refer the family to medical, mental-health, legal or emergency services when the issue is outside a training program’s scope.
Understand the CMS GUIDE model
AARP’s description of the CMS GUIDE model includes care navigation, access to a 24/7 support line, family caregiver training and education, respite services of up to $2,500 annually, and connections to community resources. The model began in July 2024. Availability depends on eligibility, geography and participating providers, so ask a health plan, clinician or local organization whether a participating provider serves your area and what requirements apply.
The respite amount is a model feature, not a universal benefit for every caregiver. Verify the covered services, approval process, provider network and renewal rules before counting on it in a care budget.
5. Find a local program through a vetted directory
When a caregiver needs a service matched to a ZIP code, diagnosis, schedule or preferred intensity, a directory is often faster than searching the open web. FCA and its partners’ Best Programs for Caregiving is a free directory with details about nearly 50 top-rated dementia-support programs. Caregivers can search by ZIP code for in-person, online or telephone options and review program outcomes and enrollment information.
How to use the directory efficiently
- Write down the care recipient’s condition, the caregiver’s ZIP code and the times when help is possible.
- Decide whether the priority is training, counseling, respite, transportation, support groups or a combination.
- Filter for in-person, online or telephone delivery, then read the program’s outcomes and enrollment details.
- Call the program to confirm current availability, eligibility, language access, fees and wait-list length.
- Ask what happens after enrollment: follow-up contacts, referrals, crisis coverage and respite options.
A directory listing is a starting point, not a guarantee that a program is clinically appropriate or currently open. Reconfirm details directly with the provider.

Coordination tools
A shared schedule can assign meals, transportation, bathing, appointments and overnight checks. A family-locator tool can show who is available without repeated calls. Agree on who may view the schedule, what information belongs in it and how changes are confirmed.
Safety devices
GPS trackers, medical-alert devices and fall-detection watches may support a safety plan, but performance depends on usability, battery life, signal coverage, monitoring arrangements and the wearer’s willingness to use the device. Select a device with the person’s clinician when appropriate. Test it in the actual home and travel areas, verify privacy settings, confirm monitoring coverage and practice the emergency response before relying on it.
Break and connection tools
Online communities can reduce isolation when they are moderated and privacy-protective. Meditation apps, streaming services and audiobook apps can create short, realistic breaks; they do not provide respite if the caregiver must remain continuously responsible for safety. Schedule another person to cover care when a genuine uninterrupted break is needed.

How to choose the right combination
Step 1: Identify the immediate risk
Start with the most urgent issue: a fall, wandering, unsafe transfer, medication concern, severe distress or a sudden change in behavior. Contact a clinician or emergency service for an urgent medical or safety problem. Do not use a course, forum or app as triage.
Step 2: Name the skill gap
Choose a structured course for foundational dementia knowledge; a live demonstration or webinar for a specific task; counseling or navigation for family, service or emotional complexity; and a peer group for ongoing support and practical ideas.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Step 3: Match delivery to real life
Use local meetings when transportation and social contact are realistic. Choose online or telephone services when distance, mobility or privacy makes travel difficult. Select recordings when shifts or unpredictable care make attendance unreliable.
Step 4: Check quality and boundaries
Compare each option on curriculum evidence, facilitator qualifications, delivery mode, cost and eligibility, condition-specific and cultural relevance, accessibility and language, privacy and data handling, and follow-up, respite and referral support. A low-cost option is not a bargain if it cannot answer the caregiver’s actual question or provide a safe escalation route.

Step 5: Build a layered plan
- Enroll in one evidence-informed course or clinician-led education session.
- Schedule a professional or navigator contact if symptoms, services or family decisions are complex.
- Join a moderated peer group for continuing support.
- Use a directory to locate respite, counseling or condition-specific services.
- Add only the technology that solves a defined coordination, safety or break-time problem.
Quality, privacy and accessibility checklist
- Evidence: Is the curriculum identified, reviewed and current?
- Human oversight: Can you see the facilitator’s qualifications and ask a question?
- Scope: Does the provider explain what it cannot diagnose or advise on?
- Fit: Does it address the care recipient’s condition, stage, culture and language?
- Access: Are captions, transcripts, interpreters, screen-reader support, telephone access or recordings available when needed?
- Schedule: Can the caregiver attend reliably, or is an on-demand option better?
- Cost and eligibility: Are fees, insurance requirements, geographic limits and wait lists clear?
- Privacy: What personal or health data are collected, who can see them and how are they deleted?
- Follow-up: Is there a support line, referral process, respite option or check-in after training?
- Safety testing: For a device, have usability, coverage, battery life and emergency response been tested in the real setting?
Practical starting plans for common situations
Newly diagnosed family
Begin with Dementia Dialogues or another sequenced course, then attend a live session where a qualified presenter can answer general questions. Use a directory to locate a local counseling, navigation or support option before a crisis develops.
Behavior or communication challenges
Choose education that specifically covers communication barriers and behavioral or emotional challenges. Keep a record of triggers and questions for a clinician, and use a moderated group for coping ideas without treating peer stories as medical instructions.
Rural or homebound caregiver
Prioritize recorded education, telephone counseling, online groups and directory searches for telephone or online programs. Add a navigator if coordinating distant relatives, transportation or respite becomes difficult.
Several relatives sharing care
Use a structured course so everyone learns the same basic approach, a shared schedule to assign tasks and family counseling or navigation when responsibilities or decisions conflict. Limit schedule access to the people who need it.
Caregiver who is close to burnout
Seek professional counseling or a support line promptly and ask about respite through participating local programs or the CMS GUIDE model where eligible. Add meditation, streaming or audiobooks only as brief supplements after another person is available to cover care.
Bottom line
Replace an AI training app with a layered support plan: a structured, evidence-informed course for fundamentals; live or recorded education for flexible learning; a moderated peer group for sustained connection; professional counseling or navigation for individualized and complex needs; and a vetted directory for local services. Use calendars, alert devices and entertainment apps to coordinate care and create short breaks, while keeping clinical decisions and safety escalation with qualified professionals.
