Its 32-inch 2560×1440 VA panel, 240Hz refresh rate, useful HDMI 2.1 connectivity and strong SDR brightness make it an excellent PC-and-console gaming monitor. The compromises are equally clear: 1440p is relatively soft at 32 inches, HDR has no local dimming, backlight uniformity can be uneven, and the stand has limited adjustment.

What makes the AW3226DM good value
The monitor’s pitch is simple: put a genuinely large, high-refresh panel on a desk without moving into the price territory normally associated with premium OLED or 4K displays. Tom’s Hardware reported a $299.99 launch price, while Club386 cited £269/$299. Expert Reviews showed a £379 reviewed price and a separate £283.98 Amazon listing. Those figures describe different regions, sellers and moments, so treat them as a price range rather than a permanent MSRP. Check the current local price before deciding; the value case is strongest when it is close to the $299/£269 references.
At that level, 240Hz is unusual on a 32-inch screen. A 27-inch 1440p monitor is sharper because the same pixels are packed into a smaller area, while a 32-inch 4K model supplies more detail but demands considerably more graphics performance to sustain high frame rates. The AW3226DM instead targets players who prefer a broad field of view, high frame rates and a lower rendering load.

Panel, curve and image quality
VA contrast and the 1500R curve
VA technology gives the AW3226DM deeper native contrast than a typical IPS gaming monitor. Club386 measured up to 2,800:1, which helps dark scenes look less grey in a dim room. The 1500R curve also keeps the outer parts of the 32-inch panel within a more consistent viewing angle and adds immersion in racing, flight and first-person games. It does not eliminate VA’s angle-dependent shifts, but it reduces the washed-out appearance you can see when viewing a large flat VA screen from the center.
SDR is the panel’s strongest mode
Expert Reviews measured 238cd/m² at the default 75% brightness in Standard mode and 569cd/m² at maximum. That is ample for a bright office or daylight gaming room, particularly with the matte coating reducing reflections. Colour accuracy was also strong for a gaming display: average Delta E was 1.04 in sRGB mode and 1.85 in Display P3. Club386 recorded 1.55 average Delta E. In practical terms, games, web pages and video look saturated without requiring immediate calibration.
For everyday use, start in Standard or sRGB mode, set brightness for your room and leave the monitor at 240Hz. Display P3 can be useful for wide-gamut game content, but sRGB is the safer choice for ordinary desktop work because it avoids excessive saturation in applications that assume the smaller gamut.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy 32-inch 1440p is visibly less sharp
The resolution works out to roughly 92 pixels per inch. Text and fine geometry are therefore softer than on a 27-inch 1440p display and substantially less crisp than on a 32-inch 4K monitor. At a normal gaming distance, the difference is most obvious in small interface text, thin browser fonts, foliage and distant textures. Windows or another desktop operating system can compensate with scaling and font smoothing, but it cannot create detail that is not present.

This is not automatically a flaw. Lower pixel density reduces the GPU workload, making it easier to approach 240 frames per second in competitive games. If you sit close to the screen for coding, photo work or dense spreadsheets, 4K is the better fit. If you sit farther back and prioritize fluidity, the AW3226DM’s size-to-performance balance makes more sense.
Backlight uniformity is the main image-quality risk
Uniformity varies from sample to sample, but it is a documented weakness. Club386 measured luminance deviations of 15–24% across the panel, and Expert Reviews also listed poor backlight uniformity as a con. You may notice brighter or darker patches on a grey test screen, or mild corner variation during dark scenes. This is less distracting in colorful games than on a dark desktop, but buyers who expect a perfectly even panel should use a retailer with a practical return policy.
HDR: supported, but not a reason to buy it
The AW3226DM accepts HDR signals, carries a DisplayHDR 400 specification and supports Dolby Vision. Expert Reviews measured approximately 550cd/m² peak HDR brightness, while Club386 reported 676 nits peak luminance at 100% brightness in its testing. These measurements are not contradictory guarantees: they come from different test methods and conditions.
The limitation is the backlight. There is no local dimming system to independently darken parts of the screen, so a bright object and a black background cannot be controlled separately. Highlights can be brighter than SDR, but shadow areas remain closer to VA’s native black level than to OLED’s pixel-level blacks. Club386 called HDR largely pointless without local dimming, and Expert Reviews often preferred SDR. Use HDR for games mastered with it if you enjoy the brighter presentation, but do not pay a premium expecting OLED-style contrast or specular highlights.

240Hz motion performance and gaming experience
At 240Hz, a new frame can arrive every 4.17 milliseconds. That reduces perceived blur and input latency compared with 60Hz or 120Hz, provided your graphics card can generate comparable frame rates. The Extreme overdrive setting carries Dell’s 1ms rating; the most aggressive mode can introduce overshoot on some VA transitions, so compare the available overdrive levels with a moving test scene and choose the cleanest setting rather than assuming the fastest label is best.
Club386 reported excellent Counter-Strike 2 play with little distracting ghosting. FreeSync Premium and VESA AdaptiveSync allow the refresh rate to follow the GPU’s frame rate, reducing tearing when performance moves below 240 frames per second. Adaptive sync is most useful when your game cannot hold a fixed 240Hz; it keeps motion coherent as frame rates fluctuate.
Connections and mixed PC-console setups
Connectivity is unusually complete for this price. There are two HDMI 2.1 inputs, one DisplayPort 1.4 connection, a USB-B upstream port, USB-A downstream ports and a USB-C downstream port providing 15W. The monitor also includes eARC. There is no 3.5mm headphone jack, so plan to connect headphones to your PC, console or an eARC-compatible audio device instead.

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S
The console-focused Console Mode caps the display at 120Hz, accepts a 4K input and downscales it to the panel’s 1440p resolution. It also provides source tone-map control. That makes the AW3226DM practical for a desk shared by a high-refresh PC and a current console, even though neither console can use the monitor’s full 240Hz capability.
- Connect the console to one of the HDMI 2.1 inputs with a suitable cable.
- Open the monitor’s on-screen display and enable Console Mode.
- Set the console to allow 120Hz output, HDR and VRR where supported.
- Choose the monitor’s tone-map option to match whether the console or display is performing HDR mapping.
- Run the console’s video-information screen and confirm 120Hz, 1440p output and VRR status.
If the console reports 4K input rather than 1440p, that is expected in Console Mode: the monitor is accepting the 4K signal and scaling it to its native resolution.
Stand, ergonomics and desk planning
The stand provides height and tilt adjustment, but it cannot swivel or rotate into portrait orientation. That is adequate for a conventional gaming desk, yet restrictive if you regularly share the screen with someone beside you or need a vertical monitor for documents. The curved panel also makes exact straight-line alignment less suitable for photo retouching, CAD or video work where geometry must look flat and predictable.

AW3226DM compared with the main alternatives
| Alternative | Sharpness and workload | Motion | Contrast and HDR | Best reason to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AW3226DM, 32-inch 1440p VA | About 92ppi; easier to drive at high frame rates | 240Hz | Strong VA contrast; HDR without local dimming | Large, smooth gaming at a mainstream price |
| 27-inch 1440p IPS | About 109ppi; sharper text | Often high refresh, model dependent | Usually weaker native contrast; HDR varies | Competitive gaming and desktop clarity in a smaller footprint |
| 32-inch 4K LCD | About 138ppi; much finer detail and higher GPU demand | Commonly lower refresh than 240Hz, model dependent | Depends on backlight; local dimming is not universal | Single-player detail, productivity and media |
| 32-inch OLED | High pixel density on newer 4K models | Very fast response; refresh varies | Pixel-level blacks and stronger HDR potential | Best dark-room contrast when the budget allows |
The AW3226DM wins this comparison only when its price and 240Hz target matter more than maximum sharpness or HDR quality. OLED remains the reference for black levels and response clarity, while 4K LCD is the better productivity choice at the same size. A 27-inch 1440p screen is the sensible alternative if your desk is shallow or you are sensitive to soft text.
Who should buy the AW3226DM?
- Buy it for: a large curved image, 240Hz competitive gaming, strong SDR brightness, VA contrast and one monitor for both PC and console.
- Choose another format for: razor-sharp 32-inch text, professional color-critical work, or HDR that rivals OLED.
- Check the panel carefully if: you play mostly dark games or work with large neutral backgrounds, because uniformity can vary noticeably.
- Budget for alternatives if: you need swivel or portrait positioning from the factory stand, or rely on a 3.5mm headphone connection.
Recommended setup
- Connect a gaming PC through DisplayPort 1.4, or use HDMI 2.1 for a console and other high-bandwidth sources.
- In the operating system and GPU control panel, select 2560×1440 at 240Hz.
- Enable FreeSync or Adaptive-Sync in the monitor menu, then enable the matching variable-refresh option in your GPU software.
- Begin with Standard mode and adjust brightness to the room; the measured default was 238cd/m² and maximum was 569cd/m² in Expert Reviews’ testing.
- Use sRGB mode when desktop colors look over-saturated, or Display P3 for wide-gamut game and video content.
- Set overdrive one step below the most aggressive option if you see bright inverse trails behind moving objects.
- Enable HDR only for games and video that benefit from it; switch back to SDR for desktop work if the image looks washed out or highlights do not gain convincing impact.
- For a console, enable Console Mode and verify 120Hz, VRR and HDR in the console’s own video-information screen.
How Expert Reviews tested it
Expert Reviews assessed build quality, stand setup, connectivity and on-screen-display usability before measuring image quality with an X-Rite i1 Display Pro Plus colorimeter and DisplayCAL. Brightness, contrast, gamut, color accuracy and 25-point backlight uniformity were recorded. Response times were measured with an OSRTT Pro CS, followed by subjective testing in bright and dark rooms, SDR and HDR video, productivity work and extended gaming. That combination explains why the review distinguishes the monitor’s strong SDR performance from its weaker HDR and uniformity results.
Final buying advice
Choose the Alienware AW3226DM when your priority is a big, fast gaming picture and the current price is near the $299/£269 launch-era references. Its 240Hz refresh, responsive VA behavior, useful HDMI 2.1 ports and console mode give it capabilities many inexpensive 32-inch displays lack. Accept the lower 92ppi sharpness, uneven-backlight risk and limited HDR before ordering. If those compromises are deal-breakers, spend the extra money on a 32-inch 4K panel for detail or an OLED for black levels; otherwise, the AW3226DM is a convincing large-screen value option.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the AW3226DM run 240Hz over HDMI?
The monitor has two HDMI 2.1 inputs. Use HDMI 2.1 for sources that require high refresh, HDR and VRR; DisplayPort 1.4 is the straightforward PC connection for 2560×1440 at 240Hz.
Does it display a 4K signal from a console?
Yes. Console Mode accepts a 4K input, downscales it to the native 1440p panel and caps refresh at 120Hz while providing tone-map control.
Is HDR better than SDR on this monitor?
Usually not. HDR reaches roughly 550cd/m² in Expert Reviews’ testing, but the monitor has no local dimming, so SDR often looks more balanced and consistent.
Is the stand fully ergonomic?
It adjusts for height and tilt, but it does not swivel or rotate to portrait orientation.
