Verdict: Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 is worth buying on PS5 if you have regular co-op partners and enjoy experimenting with weapons and class builds. Its 15-mission campaign delivers about 8–10 hours of strong shooting, while Horde mode gives a reason to keep playing. However, uneven Alien atmosphere, unstable frame rates and conspicuous bugs make it a qualified recommendation rather than an essential PS5 purchase.
The game launches for PS5 on August 25, 2026, with PS5 Pro enhancement, one-player solo support and online squads of up to four. Online co-op requires PlayStation Plus.

What Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 is on PS5
Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 is a third-person survival shooter from Daybreak. You play as a Colonial Marine facing Xenomorphs, Synthetics and bioweapon threats across a self-contained campaign. The sequel expands the formula with deeper squad mechanics, more substantial upgrades and perks, and a fully customizable Specialist class.
PlayStation lists one-player solo play and online multiplayer for up to four players. A four-person squad is the intended format, but AI synth companions can fill open positions when human players are unavailable. The PS5 version is also enhanced for PS5 Pro.

The story is designed to stand on its own. Game director Chris Cross told TechRadar that it is “its own story” and “self-contained.” The development team worked with 20th Century Studios on Alien-lore details. New players therefore do not need to finish the first Fireteam Elite before starting this one, although returning players will recognize some characters and systems.
Campaign length, missions and replay value
A compact 15-mission campaign
GamesRadar’s PS5 review measured the campaign at 15 missions and approximately 8–10 hours. That estimate describes a normal first run rather than every difficulty, collectible or build variation. It makes the story short by full-price blockbuster standards, but appropriate for a co-op shooter whose long-term loop is built around replaying missions and Horde maps.
The campaign moves through four biomes, including a surface colony and a ship. The changing environments help prevent every operation from feeling like another corridor, although the review found that the game does not always sustain the oppressive atmosphere associated with the films.

Horde mode is the main reason to return
Three Horde maps provide the principal post-campaign activity. Horde concentrates the game’s best pressure: coordinated squads hold positions, manage ammunition and focus fire while enemy waves intensify. It is also where class perks, weapon attachments and team composition matter most.
Replay value comes from increasing difficulty, trying different Specialist configurations and improving weapons rather than from a long narrative. GamesRadar recommends beginning on Standard difficulty, then moving to Intense or higher after your character and equipment are powered up.

How four-player co-op and solo play work
Four-player squads
The sequel is built around four-player co-op, a structure TechRadar reports was highly requested by the development team’s audience. A full squad can divide roles, cover multiple lanes during a defense and combine crowd-control tools with high-damage weapons. Horde mode benefits especially from communication because a player who abandons a firing lane can expose the entire team.
Online play requires PlayStation Plus. The requirement applies to multiplayer access; the PlayStation listing separately identifies one-player solo support.

You can play alone, with AI synth companions filling vacant squad positions. This makes the campaign accessible without arranging three other players, but it does not reproduce the adaptability of human teammates. Human squads can react instantly to a special enemy, rotate during a breach or coordinate cooldowns; AI partners are primarily a way to keep missions moving when you are the only human player.
Solo is therefore a practical option for learning maps, testing builds and following the story. If your main reason to buy is the tension of coordinated survival, plan on playing with people rather than treating the AI as an equal substitute.
Gunplay, weapons and Specialist builds
Shooting is the sequel’s clearest strength
GamesRadar’s review is most positive about the shooting and weapon variety. The smartgun gives you a distinctive way to handle targets, while flamethrowers create a close-range area-control option. Different weapons change how you approach a wave: you may prioritize precision fire, lane denial or sustained crowd damage depending on the mission and squad composition.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The review also praises the pressure generated by coordinated Horde squads. A weapon can feel powerful in isolation, yet the game becomes more demanding when several enemy types force the team to switch targets and maintain formation.
Perks, attachments and upgrades
Progression combines class perks, weapon attachments and upgrades. Evolving perk layouts encourage experimentation instead of locking you into one permanent role. You can adjust a build around the weapon you prefer or reshape it for a specific difficulty and team need.
The fully customizable Specialist class is the sequel’s largest build-focused addition. Customization gives you room to tune a character toward damage, support or control, although the available review does not provide a complete perk list or numerical breakdown for every configuration. The practical benefit is flexibility: two players using the same broad class can still bring different tools to a squad.
Alien atmosphere and lore fidelity
What feels authentic
The game uses recognizable Alien ingredients: Colonial Marines, Xenomorph encounters, industrial interiors, surface installations and a hostile ship environment. The developers worked with 20th Century Studios on lore, and the self-contained story avoids requiring knowledge of the first game.
The four-biome structure also gives the campaign room to vary its visual setting rather than presenting one uninterrupted facility. That variety matters in a game where missions are replayed for better gear and higher difficulty.

Where the presentation falls short
Atmosphere is less consistent than the gunplay. GamesRadar criticizes some enemy designs as out of place and notes that the pulse-rifle sound does not recreate the iconic movie effect. Those details matter to players buying specifically for film authenticity: a familiar weapon silhouette or enemy is not enough if its sound and visual treatment break the illusion.
The review’s overall description—“Aliens-flavored jankcore”—captures the trade-off. The sequel delivers a recognizable setting and enjoyable combat, but it does not maintain the polished, tightly controlled mood of the best Alien productions.
PS5 performance, bugs and technical condition
The PS5 version is playable, but technical roughness is a significant part of the buying decision. GamesRadar reports an unreliable frame rate and bugs such as a medkit that could not be picked up and corpses hanging from ceilings.
These problems do not erase the underlying shooting, but they can affect a co-op run at the worst possible moment. A missed pickup can remove a needed recovery option, while frame-rate instability can make a crowded wave harder to read. The available review does not establish a universal performance profile, a specific frame-rate target or a guaranteed patch schedule, so buyers should not assume that PS5 Pro enhancement means every issue is resolved.

PS5 editions, prices and add-ons
| Option | Price | What it includes | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | $49.99 | Base game | Players who want the campaign and core co-op without extras |
| Premium Edition | $69.99 | Base game plus Ripley’s Hive Exterminator Pack and Herk’s Mondo Pest Pack | Players who already want the included add-on packs |
| Premium upgrade | $19.99 | Upgrade from the Standard Edition to Premium content | Standard owners who decide later that they want the Premium packs |
| Rain’s Jackson’s Star Pack | $9.99 | Separate add-on pack | Players who specifically want this extra content |
Prices are the suggested retail prices announced for launch and may vary by region, taxes and store promotions. The Premium Edition costs $20 more than Standard at the stated prices, matching the separate $19.99 upgrade. The available information identifies the named packs but does not provide a complete item-by-item contents list, so do not treat Premium as a gameplay expansion unless the store description says otherwise.
Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 compared with the first game
The sequel is easier to recommend to newcomers than a direct continuation might be. The story is self-contained, and GamesRadar says you do not need to have played the first game. Returning players will recognize some characters and systems, but the available review material does not provide like-for-like measurements for the first game’s campaign length, frame rate or edition pricing. The comparison below therefore focuses on what is established about the sequel and what remains unquantified.
| Comparison point | Fireteam Elite 2 on PS5 | First Fireteam Elite |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign | 15 missions; about 8–10 hours in the PS5 review | Not stated in the available evidence |
| Replay activity | Three Horde maps, higher difficulties and build experimentation | Not stated in the available evidence |
| Squad size | Online squads of up to four; AI synths fill gaps; one-player solo support | Not stated in the available evidence |
| Build system | Customizable Specialist class, evolving perks, weapons, attachments and upgrades | Returning players will recognize some systems, but no direct feature accounting is provided |
| Story continuity | Self-contained; prior-game knowledge is optional | Serves as the earlier game in the series |
| PS5 technical evidence | Review reports unreliable frame rate and launch bugs | No comparable PS5 measurement is provided |
| Launch pricing in the cited material | Standard $49.99; Premium $69.99 | Not stated |
In practical terms, the sequel’s strongest case over simply revisiting the earlier game is its four-player focus, expanded Specialist customization and new campaign setting. The evidence does not support claiming a quantified improvement in every system, so expectations should be based on those documented additions rather than an assumption that the sequel is uniformly more polished.

Buy the Standard Edition if
- You have at least one regular co-op partner and want a focused four-player shooter.
- You value weapon variety and build experimentation more than a long single-player campaign.
- You are comfortable with occasional frame-rate drops and visual bugs.
- You want to follow an Alien-inspired story without playing the first game.
- You would rather pay $49.99 for the base experience before deciding on extra packs.
Consider Premium if
- You already know you want the Ripley’s Hive Exterminator Pack and Herk’s Mondo Pest Pack.
- You prefer buying the $69.99 bundle instead of adding the $19.99 upgrade later.
- You are choosing add-on content for collection value rather than expecting a longer campaign.
Wait or skip if
- You require stable performance and minimal launch bugs.
- You are buying primarily for exact movie-authentic sound design and atmosphere.
- You expect a 20-hour-plus campaign from the initial purchase.
- You will play entirely alone and do not enjoy repeating missions or Horde waves.
Practical tips for your first PS5 run
- Start on Standard. This is the review’s recommended entry difficulty and gives you time to learn enemy behavior, weapon ranges and mission layouts.
- Use the early missions to test builds. Try the smartgun, flamethrowers and other available weapons before committing your perks and attachments to a single style.
- Keep the squad together in Horde. The mode’s pressure comes from coordinated waves; spreading out can leave one lane without enough damage or crowd control.
- Move to Intense after upgrading. Once your weapons and perks are developed, higher difficulty provides the intended test of build choices and team coordination.
- Use solo play as a learning mode. AI synth companions let you practice, but human teammates are the better choice for deliberate role coverage and rapid reactions.
- Check the store edition carefully. Confirm whether you are buying Standard, Premium or the separate Rain’s Jackson’s Star Pack, and verify your region’s final price before checkout.
Final assessment
Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 succeeds where a co-op shooter needs to: the weapons are enjoyable, builds invite experimentation and four-player squads create genuine pressure. Fifteen missions provide a concentrated campaign, while three Horde maps and higher difficulties supply the repeatable activity.
It falls short of a must-own PS5 recommendation because the Alien presentation is uneven and the launch build shows technical roughness. The pulse-rifle audio, certain enemy designs, unreliable frame rate and reported bugs all weaken the sense of polish. For a group of friends willing to accept that roughness, Standard Edition offers a fair entry point at $49.99. Solo players can complete the game, but they should buy for the shooting and build system rather than expecting AI companions to deliver the same experience as a coordinated human squad.
