The company’s FY2026 annual report says each share carries one vote; it also gives the Partnership the exclusive right to nominate—or, in limited circumstances, appoint—up to a simple majority of directors. Those are different kinds of power: shareholders hold the economic interests, while the Partnership has a distinctive role in board selection.
Who owns Alibaba’s shares?
Alibaba is a publicly listed company, so investors who hold its shares own portions of the listed holding company. There is no single person or institution identified in the company’s disclosures as the owner of all of Alibaba. Shareholdings change over time, and a filing reports a dated snapshot rather than a live ownership register.

Alibaba’s FY2026 annual report, published June 18, 2026, reports substantial shareholder interests as of March 31, 2026. It lists BlackRock, Inc. with 983,512,344 shares of long interest, or 5.14%, classified as an interest in controlled corporations. That disclosure describes a reported share interest; it does not establish that BlackRock has equivalent board control. Alibaba also cautions that information about non-director holders was derived from public Hong Kong Stock Exchange filings or other available information and may not be complete or accurate. Alibaba Group FY2026 annual report and filings.
The same report gives Joe Tsai’s aggregate reported interest as 1.43% as of March 31, 2026. This is a director-and-CEO disclosure, not a complete list of founders’ personal holdings. The cited disclosure does not establish Jack Ma’s current personal ownership percentage, so older figures should not be treated as a current answer.

Who has influence over Alibaba’s board?
Share ownership and board influence are not interchangeable. Alibaba says it has one class of shares, with one vote per share. At the same time, its Articles give the Alibaba Partnership the exclusive right to nominate or, in specified circumstances, appoint up to a simple majority of directors. The Partnership’s nominees still require majority approval from shareholders voting at the annual general meeting.
As described in the FY2026 annual report, Alibaba’s board had 10 directors, four of them Partnership nominees. The Partnership had not fully exercised its nomination right. If a nominee is not elected or leaves the board, the Partnership may appoint an interim director in specified circumstances until the next scheduled AGM. The relevant Articles provisions can be amended only with approval from shareholders representing 95% of votes present at a general meeting. These arrangements are set out in the company’s governance overview and annual report.
What is the Alibaba Partnership?
The Alibaba Partnership is a management body, not another name for Jack Ma or a block of shares. Alibaba’s FY2026 annual report says it had 18 members. Partnership votes follow a one-partner-one-vote basis, and new partners are elected annually after nomination and review. Jack Ma and Joe Tsai are designated continuity partners on the Partnership committee; that governance role should not be confused with their individual shareholdings.

Alibaba describes its structure this way: “Unlike dual class ownership structures that employ a high vote class of shares to concentrate control in a few founders, our approach is designed to embody the vision of a large group of management partners.” That is Alibaba’s own characterization of its governance model, not an independent assessment.

Does Jack Ma still own Alibaba?
Jack Ma may hold Alibaba shares, but the available FY2026 disclosure cited here does not provide a complete current personal percentage for him. It does identify him as a continuity partner, a position within the Partnership’s governance structure. That role does not, by itself, tell you how many shares he personally owns.
Is Alibaba owned by the Chinese government?
The cited company disclosures describe Alibaba Group Holding Limited as incorporated in the Cayman Islands and publicly held by shareholders; they do not identify the Chinese government as the owner of the listed company. That answer needs a structural qualification: Alibaba says some PRC internet businesses operate through variable interest entities (VIEs) and contractual arrangements because Chinese rules restrict or prohibit foreign investment in certain areas.

In this structure, a shareholder owns shares in Alibaba’s listed holding company, not direct title to every underlying Chinese operating entity, asset, or license. Alibaba consolidates VIE financial results under applicable accounting rules and relies on contractual arrangements for relevant business interests. Its annual report’s corporate-structure discussion explains the arrangement; it should not be simplified into a claim that shareholders directly own the VIEs. What “owns Alibaba” can mean
| Meaning | What the FY2026 disclosures establish |
|---|---|
| Economic stake | Shareholders own the listed company. BlackRock’s reported long interest was 5.14% as of March 31, 2026; this is a dated filing figure, not a live ownership total. |
| Share voting rights | Alibaba says it has one class of shares, with one vote per share. |
| Board influence | The Partnership can nominate or, in specified cases, appoint up to a simple majority of directors; its nominees are subject to shareholder approval. Four of the 10 directors were Partnership nominees in the FY2026 report. |
| Underlying PRC operations | Some businesses operate through VIEs and contractual arrangements; listed-company shareholders do not thereby directly own each VIE’s assets or licenses. |
Alibaba filed its FY2026 Form 20-F on May 20, 2026, for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026. Its 2026 AGM voting results are dated September 23, 2026, but meeting results are not a replacement for a dated shareholder-interest table. Alibaba investor relations filings and the 2026 AGM page provide those distinct records.
