What Amazon changed with these tablets
Amazon’s three new tablets use standard Android and include the complete Google Play Store. That means access to Google apps such as YouTube, Netflix, Gmail and Google Docs alongside Amazon software including Prime Video, Kindle, Audible, Amazon Music and Luna.

Older Fire tablets used Amazon’s Fire OS and Amazon Appstore. Owners could often find popular services through Amazon’s catalog or workarounds, but Google’s app ecosystem was not integrated in the same way. The new tablets are Google-certified Android devices, making Play Store availability the central upgrade for anyone who has been blocked by missing apps, delayed updates or inconvenient alternatives on a Fire tablet.

Amazon’s Devices International vice president Eric Saarnio called the release “the biggest leap we’ve ever made in developing tablets in our history.” The practical part of that leap is not only faster hardware; it is the combination of Android, Google Play and Amazon’s services on one device.

The 12 Pro can be configured with up to 16GB of RAM. Amazon also offers a Nanomatte anti-glare version starting at $549.99. The battery figures are manufacturer estimates for video playback, not independent endurance tests, so actual runtime will depend on brightness, wireless use, app activity and settings.
Why the Alexa Tablet 11 is the default recommendation
The 11 sits between the other models in both price and capability. Its 2.5K resolution should provide a sharper view for web pages, comics and video than a basic HD panel, while the 90Hz refresh rate makes scrolling and supported animations appear smoother than on a 60Hz display. Its 8GB of RAM gives it more headroom than the Tablet 8’s 4GB for switching between browser tabs, streaming and communication apps.
At $329.99, it is $100 more than the Tablet 8 and $170 less than the Tablet 12 Pro. That middle position matters because the 11 includes the main platform change—full Android and Google Play—without requiring the Pro’s higher price or accessory budget. Dual Dolby Atmos speakers also make it better suited to watching shows without headphones than a small, travel-focused tablet.

Buy the 11 when your routine includes streaming, reading, email, social apps, video calls, shopping and occasional document work. Its 64GB base storage is the main limitation to consider; people with large offline video, music or game libraries should check the storage options before ordering.
When the Alexa Tablet 8 makes more sense
Portability is its defining advantage
The Alexa Tablet 8 has an 8.7-inch display and weighs 329g. That size is easier to hold in one hand for ebooks, recipes, airline travel or short viewing sessions, and it takes less space in a small bag. Wi-Fi 6 provides modern wireless connectivity, while Amazon rates it for up to 14 hours of video playback.
What you give up
The base model has 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage and a 60Hz screen. Those specifications are adequate for reading, casual streaming and light browsing, but they provide less multitasking margin than the Tablet 11. The smaller panel also shows less content at once, which means more scrolling in websites, documents and split-screen layouts.
Select the 8 if weight and grip comfort are your primary constraints. Paying extra for the 11 is more sensible when the tablet will be your main home screen or when you regularly move between several apps.

Why choose the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro
A workspace-oriented screen
The 12 Pro uses a 12-inch display with a 3:2 aspect ratio, 120Hz refresh rate and 280 pixels per inch. The taller 3:2 shape leaves more vertical room for documents, web pages and note-taking than a typical widescreen video panel. The 120Hz mode is intended to make scrolling and pen movement feel more fluid, although there is no independent comparative performance test establishing how every app behaves at that rate.
More memory and newer wireless hardware
The base configuration includes 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, and Amazon offers configurations with up to 16GB of RAM. Wi-Fi 6E can use the newer 6GHz band when paired with a compatible router. Quad Dolby Atmos speakers provide a larger audio system than the dual-speaker arrangement on the Tablet 11.
Keyboard, pen and anti-glare options
Amazon lists a dedicated Pro Keyboard for $149.99 and a Pro Pen for $89.99. The pen uses the USI 2.0 standard and supports 4,096 pressure levels, tilt detection, magnetic docking and wireless charging. The Nanomatte anti-glare configuration starts at $549.99, a $50 premium over the regular 12 Pro starting price.

The 12 Pro is the appropriate choice when the tablet must handle longer writing sessions, multiple visible windows, handwritten notes or a desktop-style accessory setup. Its price rises quickly once the keyboard, pen or Nanomatte screen is added, so compare the complete configuration rather than only the tablet’s starting price.

Google Play: what changes for a Fire tablet owner
On these models, Google Play is part of the Android software experience rather than an unofficial installation. You can use Google’s catalog for apps such as Gmail, Google Docs, YouTube and Netflix while retaining Amazon’s services. This is especially important if your current Fire tablet lacks an app, receives it late or requires a browser-based substitute.
Google Play does not automatically make every Android app ideal for a tablet. App developers still control tablet layouts, update schedules and compatibility, and the available evidence does not establish edge-case compatibility for every application. It does establish that the devices are Google-certified and ship with the full Play Store.

Alexa+ is built into all three tablets and works through voice or touch. Amazon describes a Dynamic Tab and a personalized “For You” feed that surface recommendations and ongoing content. This makes Alexa+ a visible part of the tablet interface rather than a voice feature hidden in settings.

TechRadar reported that Alexa+ can cost $19.99 per month for non-Prime users, while Prime members receive it at no additional charge. Subscription terms can change, so verify the current offer and eligibility when setting up the tablet.

A Kindle mode reported by TechRadar can silence notifications, reduce blue light and extend battery life. Use it when reading is the priority; switch back to the normal profile when you need alerts or full-color media.

Availability and purchase timing
Amazon announced shipping from October 14, 2026, in the United States, Mexico and Canada. The company said shipping would begin October 19 in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. Orders for the initial North American markets opened October 8. Amazon.com and selected retailers including Best Buy and Target were named as sales channels.
Because availability, configurations and delivery dates can differ by country, select your region before comparing prices. The figures in this article are US starting prices; taxes, storage upgrades and the Nanomatte finish can increase the checkout total.
Should you upgrade from a Fire tablet?
Upgrade when app access is the problem
An upgrade is most compelling if you depend on Google apps or services that are missing, outdated or awkward on your current Fire tablet. Full Google Play access removes the need to choose between a limited Appstore catalog and browser workarounds. The faster refresh rates, extra RAM on the 11 and 12 Pro, and larger displays are additional benefits, but app access is the clearest reason to move.
Keep your Fire tablet when it still meets your routine
If you mainly read Kindle books, watch Prime Video, listen to Audible and use a small set of existing apps, a working Fire tablet may not need replacement solely because new models exist. The new devices are not accompanied by independent evidence here of superior sustained gaming, long-term battery life or benchmark performance across all three sizes.
A practical upgrade checklist
- List the apps you use every week and identify which ones are unavailable or inconvenient on your Fire tablet.
- Decide whether you value minimum weight, a general-purpose screen or a workspace-sized display.
- Choose storage based on offline video, music, photos and documents rather than today’s free space.
- For the 12 Pro, add the keyboard, pen and Nanomatte premium to your budget before comparing it with a laptop or another tablet.
- Check the shipping country, configuration and current Alexa+ terms at checkout.
What is not yet established
Hands-on coverage of the 12 Pro has noted that all three devices still require full testing before a final value verdict. There is no defensible basis yet for claiming that one model is the fastest in benchmarks, delivers the longest real-world battery life, performs best in sustained gaming or handles every Android app better than the others. Amazon’s playback numbers are useful for comparing the company’s own claims, not guarantees of your personal runtime.
On the information currently available, the buying decision is straightforward: choose the Alexa Tablet 11 for the broadest balance of screen, memory, audio and price; move down to the Tablet 8 for portability; and pay for the Tablet 12 Pro only when its 3:2 display, higher refresh rate, Wi-Fi 6E, extra memory or productivity accessories solve a specific need.
