Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A brief blue glimmer can mean it is processing a request or receiving a software update, while a slowly spinning teal-and-blue light indicates startup or a restart after an update.
Identify the pattern on a standard Echo speaker
Look at both the color and the movement: the same blue light can signal different stages of an interaction.

| Light pattern | What it means |
|---|---|
| Cyan spotlight on a blue ring | Alexa is listening. Amazon’s Echo light guide describes this as the listening indicator. |
| Brief blue glimmer | Alexa may have heard you and be processing your request. Amazon also says a brief glimmer might indicate that the device is receiving a software update. |
| Slowly spinning teal and blue | The speaker is starting up. It can also show this pattern as it restarts after completing an update. |
Check whether you have a screen or a newer Echo model
Echo devices with a screen
On an Echo device with a screen, watch the light bar rather than looking for a speaker ring. A cyan spotlight on the blue bar means Alexa is listening; the spotlight moves briefly while Alexa processes a request. Amazon also describes a teal-blue bar as the ready-to-speak state, which lets you speak without first saying the wake word. See Amazon’s screen-device light descriptions for that indicator.

Amazon’s guidance for these newer models distinguishes three blue patterns: two pulsing blue lights mean the device is listening, blue moving through the ring means it is processing, and a pulsing blue light at the bottom means Alexa is responding. Use the model-specific light descriptions rather than assuming a standard Echo ring’s pattern applies.

Does a blue light mean Alexa is recording?
Amazon says an Echo shows a visual indicator when it detects its wake word or when you press the Action button to activate Alexa. The indicator shows that the device is recording the request to stream it to the cloud. Amazon says the stream includes a fraction of a second of audio before the wake word and closes when Alexa determines the interaction has ended. The blue light is therefore associated with an Alexa interaction, not a general microphone-muted state.
To disconnect the microphones, press the microphone enable/disable button on the speaker. Amazon says microphone power is disconnected and a dedicated red light comes on; voice interaction is unavailable while the microphones are off. A blue light alone is not the microphone-off indicator. See Amazon’s microphone and privacy guidance.

Blue light on, but Alexa does not answer
If the speaker indicates that it is listening but does not respond, work through these checks:
- Confirm the Echo is connected to power with the supplied power adapter.
- Check that it has an active internet connection.
- Make sure the microphone has not been muted; the microphone-off indicator is red.
- Move the speaker away from walls, other speakers, and background noise.
- Press the Action button to try activating Alexa directly.
- Unplug the speaker, then reconnect it and allow it to start up.
These steps follow Amazon’s Echo troubleshooting advice.
