Gaming’s Shifts Are Uneven: What’s Changing for Players and Studios

The video game industry is changing on several fronts at once: revenue is growing unevenly across platforms, mobile publishers are leaning harder on retention and spending, and new tools and routes to players are reshaping production and access. But “changing at a faster pace” is a useful description of these overlapping shifts, not a measured industry-wide acceleration: the available reports do not establish a consistent historical rate of change.

What the latest forecasts say about the games market

Newzoo forecasts global games revenue of $213.9 billion in 2026, up 6.1% year over year, and 3.70 billion players, up 4.4%. It forecasts 1.65 billion spenders, or 44.6% of players, up 4.7%. These are forecasts, not final audited results.

Platform 2026 revenue forecast Year-over-year change What the figures suggest
Mobile $121.1 billion +6.8% Largest revenue segment; growth is increasingly tied to monetizing and retaining players rather than simply adding downloads.
Console $46.9 billion +5.1% Growth is associated with game releases, Switch 2, subscriptions and higher prices.
PC $45.9 billion +5.3% A substantial market with premium and mid-priced sales alongside other business models.

Newzoo also forecasts 3.10 billion mobile players in 2026. The platform values are Newzoo forecasts and should not be read as a guarantee that every segment, publisher or player base will grow at the same rate.

Why mobile growth is about more than downloads

Mobile remains the largest platform by forecast revenue, but revenue and downloads are not moving in lockstep. Sensor Tower’s February 2026 report on 2025 estimates mobile game revenue at $82 billion, up 1% for the year, while describing download growth as slower. Across mobile, PC and console, it counted 52 billion gaming downloads in 2025; mobile games were downloaded 95,000 times per minute on average during that year.

For established mobile games, the commercial challenge is increasingly to keep players engaged and encourage spending, not just to attract another install. Sensor Tower points to live operations, in-game events and collaborations with established intellectual property as engagement tactics. Oliver Yeh, Sensor Tower’s CEO and co-founder, described mobile as having “entered a more mature phase.” That does not mean mobile has stopped growing: Newzoo forecasts 6.8% revenue growth for the platform in 2026. It means download volume alone is a poor measure of the business.

Sensor Tower also reports that PC and console revenue increased 13% in 2025, alongside a 7% increase in downloads and an 8.4% rise in releases. Those figures describe a different pattern from mobile’s slower download growth and modest revenue increase; they do not establish that every PC or console market grew equally.

How production, discovery and access are shifting

Technology and distribution changes affect different parts of the value chain. Boston Consulting Group (BCG) identifies generative AI, user-generated content (UGC), cloud gaming and changes to app-store access as forces that may alter how games are made, found, played and monetized. Their maturity varies: a tool being explored in production is not the same as a new distribution route becoming broadly available.

Generative AI in development

Generative AI can affect production workflows, but the available evidence does not show that it has transformed every studio or replaced game-development teams. Its significance depends on how developers use it, what tasks it supports and how the resulting work is reviewed. It is best understood as a potential production change, not as proof that game creation has already been automated across the industry.

User-created content and communities

UGC gives players a role in making experiences and can extend activity around a game beyond content produced solely by its developer. In BCG’s online gamer survey, fielded July 9–18, 2025, 40% of 2,972 respondents said they were consuming more UGC than a year earlier. This is a survey finding about respondents’ reported behavior, not a measure of all players or of how much revenue UGC generates.

Cloud gaming and access

Cloud gaming can let players stream games rather than run them locally on dedicated hardware, potentially changing the devices needed to play. In the same BCG survey, 60% of respondents said they had tried cloud gaming; 80% of those who had tried it reported a positive experience. Those results indicate favorable experiences among surveyed users who had tried the technology, not universal adoption or the replacement of consoles and gaming PCs.

App-store access and distribution

Changes to app-store rules and access can affect how games reach players and how developers distribute and monetize them. The effects depend on the market, the applicable rules and how distribution options develop. BCG treats an opening-up of app stores as a potential source of change, not as a uniform change already completed everywhere.

What these changes mean for players and studios

For players

  • More ways to play: Cloud access may broaden the devices from which some games can be played, while leaving local hardware relevant.
  • More player-shaped experiences: UGC can make communities and player-created content a larger part of the experience.
  • More ongoing engagement: Live events and collaborations can keep mobile games active, though they also reflect publishers’ focus on retaining players and generating spending.

For studios and publishers

  • Different platform economics: A strategy built around mobile installs may not fit a PC or console release, where pricing, release timing and hardware or subscription dynamics matter differently.
  • Retention as a business priority: In a mature mobile market, returning players and monetization can matter more than continually increasing downloads.
  • New opportunities with trade-offs: AI workflows, UGC, cloud access and distribution changes may open new routes to production or audiences, while shifting costs, control or competitive pressure across the value chain.

How to interpret the phrase “faster pace”

The reports document simultaneous changes in market forecasts, player behavior, business models and technology. They do not provide a consistent historical measure proving that the entire games industry is changing faster now than during an earlier period. The pace also differs by platform and by part of the business: mobile’s monetization shift is not the same phenomenon as console release-driven momentum, PC sales, or experiments in cloud gaming and AI.

Figures from different publishers also have different scopes. For example, BCG estimates nearly $130 billion in mobile in-app purchases in 2025, nearly half of global industry revenue. That is a separate estimate and category from Newzoo’s platform revenue forecasts and Sensor Tower’s mobile revenue figure; the numbers should not be added together or treated as directly interchangeable.
