Bottom line: The Aldi Stirling SC-270S is a discontinued, corded stick steam mop with separate water and detergent-solution tanks. It heats in about 30 seconds and includes washable pads and a carpet glider, but its published capacity, weight and reach differ between the CHOICE listing and the 2015 instruction manual. A used example can make sense only when it is inexpensive, complete, safe and supported by compatible replacement parts.
This review separates the figures reported by CHOICE from those in the manufacturer’s manual, explains the correct detergent and pad setup, and gives a practical inspection checklist for buying one second-hand.

Verdict in brief
The SC-270S is best viewed as a basic steam mop with a useful detergent dispenser rather than a current, fully supported appliance. Its documented advantages are quick warm-up, a long mains lead, two types of washable floor pad and a carpet-glider accessory. The main uncertainties are the model’s discontinued status, differing published specifications and the possibility that filters, tanks or pads may be difficult to source.

What the Aldi Stirling SC-270S is
The Stirling SC-270S is a corded stick steam mop sold by Aldi in Australia. The instruction manual identifies the appliance as model SC-270S, product code 51710, and is dated 20 August 2015. It uses mains power, heats water into steam and allows a separate detergent solution to be metered onto the pad.
CHOICE’s current public listing marks the model as discontinued and shows a $70.00 price and a three-year warranty. Those are listing details, not evidence that new stock or warranty service is still available. CHOICE’s member-gated Expert Rating and test-result fields are not publicly exposed, so there is no defensible independent cleaning score or comparative ranking to quote.

Do not merge the conflicting figures into a single “official” specification. CHOICE may be reporting a measured or catalogued value in its product database, while the manual gives the manufacturer’s technical specification. The same caution applies to reach: an 8.5 m CHOICE figure may describe total operating reach, whereas the manual’s 8 m figure explicitly describes the power cord.
What you receive and what each accessory does
The manual lists the following supplied accessories:

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Two washable microfibre pads: intended for normal cleaning. Their washable construction reduces the need for disposable pads, but a used machine may have pads that are worn, shrunken or permanently stained.
- One shag-pile cleaning pad: intended for heavier cleaning and greater water absorption. Confirm that the shag fibres and attachment surface are intact before use.
- One carpet glider: fits over the cleaning pad for carpet use as described by the manual. It is not interchangeable with the floor pads themselves.
- One filler cup: used to transfer water or prepared solution into the appropriate tank without guessing the volume.
Missing accessories do not necessarily make the mop electrically unsafe, but they reduce its practical value. A carpet glider is particularly difficult to substitute reliably because an ill-fitting part can obstruct the head or allow the mop to drag unevenly.
How to set up and operate the SC-270S
- Prepare the appliance. Place the mop upright on a heat-resistant surface near a suitable 220–240 V outlet. Inspect the power cord, plug, tanks and pad attachment before filling anything.
- Fill the water tank. Use the filler cup and stay within the tank’s marked limit. The manual specifies a 650 mL tank, while CHOICE lists 0.5 L; use the level markings on your individual tank rather than trying to force the larger published number into it.
- Prepare optional detergent solution. If you want solution delivery, use an appropriately diluted mixture at 1:5, or a ready-to-use steam-mop solution. The manual describes adding about 180 mL to the detergent tank, whose stated capacity is 200 mL.
- Fit a cleaning pad. Attach a washable microfibre pad for normal cleaning or the shag-pile pad for heavier cleaning and higher absorption. Never operate the mop without a properly fitted pad.
- Connect power and switch on. Keep the mop upright while it heats. Wait for the steam-ready light before moving it across the floor.
- Set solution delivery. Use the detergent-solution dial to vary how much prepared solution is dispensed. Start at a low setting and increase only when the surface and pad require it.
- Work in controlled passes. Keep the head flat and avoid turning the appliance over or using it on its side. Pause if the pad becomes saturated or the floor is receiving more moisture than intended.
- Shut down safely. Switch off, unplug and allow the mop to cool before removing the pad, emptying tanks or carrying out maintenance.
The manual’s approximate 30-second heat-up time is a starting point, not a guaranteed result for every used unit. A mineral-clogged filter, low water level, electrical fault or failed indicator can make the wait longer or prevent steam production altogether.
Water, detergent and pad choices
Water tank
The tank is filled separately from the detergent reservoir. Because the two published water capacities conflict, do not estimate remaining water from the specification alone. Follow the fill line molded into the tank and stop before the maximum mark.

Detergent solution
The manual says to use an appropriately diluted solution at 1:5 or a ready-to-use steam-mop product. It specifically warns against full-strength floor-cleaning detergent. Concentrated detergent can leave residue, over-wet the pad or place stress on the solution-delivery system.

The manual gives POWERFORCE Steam Mop Solution as an example of a ready-to-use product. That reference does not establish that the product is still sold, nor does it make that brand necessary. Choose only a product whose label permits steam-mop use and follow the stated dilution.
Which pad to use
Use a microfibre pad for routine hard-floor cleaning. Use the shag-pile pad when you need heavier cleaning or more absorption. Wash pads according to their care instructions and let them dry fully before storing them; a damp pad left attached can develop odour and may degrade the hook-and-loop attachment.
Heat-up time, power and day-to-day handling
The manual rates the SC-270S at 1400–1600 W on 220–240 V power and states a working pressure of about 1 bar. It is therefore a mains-powered appliance, not a battery mop with a defined cordless runtime. The documented heat-up time is approximately 30 seconds, after which the steam-ready light should indicate that operation can begin.

CHOICE lists a 3.7 kg weight and 8.5 m reach. The manual lists 3.5 kg and an 8 m power cord. Neither source establishes how those figures were measured, so use them as reference points when comparing models rather than as a promise of identical handling. The manual’s dimensions are 290 × 210 × 1220 mm; check storage space against the assembled height before buying.

Safety limits you should not ignore
- Steam can scald. Keep hands, feet, children and pets away from the head and the steam path. Do not open or remove tanks while the appliance is hot.
- Keep the mop upright. The manual warns against turning it over or using it on its side. Doing so can redirect hot water or steam and increase the risk of burns.
- Always fit a pad. Operating without a properly attached cleaning pad can expose the surface to concentrated heat and interfere with the intended steam path.
- Use only the specified solution strength. Never pour full-strength floor detergent into the solution tank.
- Respect the electrical rating. The 220–240 V, 1400–1600 W rating is the manual’s specification. Stop using a unit with a damaged cord, plug, insulation or signs of liquid entering the electrical housing.
- Do not defeat protection devices. The appliance includes overheat protection. If it cuts out, unplug it, let it cool and investigate water level, blockages and filter condition rather than bypassing the protection.
Cleaning, filters and replacement parts
The manual’s after-sales parts list includes a hard-water filter, microfibre cleaning pad, shag-pile pad, carpet glider, detergent-solution tank, filler cup, handle, mop head, power cord and cord hooks. This is useful because it identifies the components intended to be replaceable, but it does not guarantee that any of them remain in stock for a discontinued model.
Before ordering, match the model designation SC-270S and product code 51710, compare the shape and attachment points with your part, and ask the seller to confirm fit in writing. For marketplace purchases, check the return policy in case a part is listed as “universal” but does not seat correctly.
The manual gives an after-sales telephone number, 1300 886 649, and also lists an email contact. Contact details and inventory may have changed since 2015, so treat the manual as a historical reference and verify that the channel still operates. A hard-water filter is especially important if the appliance has been used with mineral-rich water; a clogged or missing filter can affect steam output, but the available material does not provide a replacement interval.
Buying an SC-270S used: a practical inspection checklist
Before you travel
- Ask for a photo of the rating label, model number and product code.
- Confirm whether the water tank, detergent tank, filler cup, two microfibre pads, shag-pile pad and carpet glider are included.
- Ask whether the unit heats, whether the steam-ready light illuminates and whether the solution dial changes delivery.
- Check for a working power cord with no cuts, exposed conductors, crushed sections or heat damage.
- Ask how the appliance was stored and whether it was emptied and dried after use.
When inspecting the mop
- Check the handle, mop head, cord hooks and tank seams for cracks or repairs.
- Inspect the pad attachment area. Missing fasteners or badly worn hook-and-loop material can allow the pad to detach during use.
- Fill the water tank only to its marked line and look for leaks before powering on.
- If the seller can demonstrate operation safely, verify that the unit reaches its ready indication in roughly the manual’s 30-second timeframe and produces steam without unusual electrical smell or noise.
- Test the detergent tank and dial only with a properly diluted solution, never concentrated floor cleaner.
- Confirm that the carpet glider clips on securely and can be removed without forcing the head.
Warranty and price judgment
CHOICE lists the original model at $70.00 with a three-year warranty, and the manual also contains a three-year warranty section. Those documents do not establish the remaining warranty on a used appliance. Value a second-hand unit according to its present condition, included accessories and the availability of pads and filters, not the historical retail figure.

How to compare it with another steam mop
Because no independent SC-270S cleaning or ease-of-use score is publicly available, compare specifications and ownership support directly. The following checklist keeps the comparison fair:
| Comparison point | SC-270S information | What to verify on another model |
|---|---|---|
| Heat-up | About 30 seconds in the 2015 manual | Whether the figure is manufacturer-stated or independently measured, and whether a ready indicator is provided |
| Water capacity | 0.5 L in CHOICE; 650 mL in the manual | Usable fill volume and whether the tank is removable |
| Detergent capacity | 200 mL in the manual; about 180 mL solution fill described | Whether detergent is supported, required, diluted or prohibited |
| Reach | 8.5 m reach in CHOICE; 8 m power cord in the manual | Total cord length, swivel reach and outlet spacing in your rooms |
| Weight | 3.7 kg in CHOICE; 3.5 kg in the manual | Whether the quoted weight includes the cord, pad or accessories |
| Accessories | Two microfibre pads, shag-pile pad, carpet glider and filler cup | Number, washability and current availability of equivalent replacements |
| Maintenance | Hard-water filter and multiple replaceable parts listed in the manual | Filter-change guidance, part numbers and current stock |
| Support | Discontinued model; manual lists 1300 886 649 and an email contact | Current support channel, warranty terms and return process |
| Independent evidence | CHOICE test fields are member-gated on the accessible listing | Look for transparent, model-specific test methods rather than an unverified score |
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The documented material supports a specification and usability review: you can assess the tanks, heat-up claim, controls, accessories, safety instructions and parts list. It does not support a measured claim about floor wetness, cleaning performance, ease-of-use score or superiority over another steam mop. CHOICE identifies testing staff, but the public page does not expose a quotable test conclusion or Expert Rating for this model.
That limitation matters when reading listings that describe the SC-270S as “powerful,” “deep cleaning” or equivalent to a newer model. Those descriptions are not established by the accessible evidence. Treat the appliance’s condition, correct pad use and safe detergent dilution as the decisive factors for a used purchase.

A reasonable used purchase for
- Someone who wants a corded steam mop with a documented 30-second warm-up and does not need cordless operation.
- A buyer who values a separate detergent dispenser and washable pads.
- An owner able to verify the model, obtain compatible consumables and accept discontinued-product support risk.
Better to pass when
- The seller cannot demonstrate heating, steam production or a working ready light.
- The cord, plug, tanks or mop head show damage, leaks or improvised repairs.
- Key pads, the carpet glider or hard-water filter are missing and replacements cannot be confirmed.
- You need a current warranty, guaranteed parts supply or independently published cleaning comparisons.
Final assessment
The Aldi Stirling SC-270S remains a clearly specified older steam mop: 1400–1600 W, approximately 30-second heat-up, separate 200 mL solution tank, washable pads and a carpet glider. Its two sets of published capacity, weight and reach figures should be kept attributed to their sources, not blended. For a used buyer, the sensible decision is conditional: purchase only a complete, electrically sound example at a price that leaves room for replacement pads or filters, and confirm compatibility before committing to parts.
