AirPods 5 vs. Other Wireless Earbuds: What to Compare Before Buying

Compare AirPods 5 and competing earbuds by the factors that matter in daily use: fit, noise control, phone compatibility, battery conditions, case features and current local price.

There is no universal winner between AirPods 5 and competing wireless earbuds. Start with whether you prefer an open fit or silicone ear tips, then compare noise control, phone compatibility, battery conditions, case features, durability and the current price where you live. A specification advantage cannot tell you whether a particular pair will fit your ears or sound better to you.

Which earbuds belong in the comparison?

These alternatives cover different priorities rather than forming a single ranked list. Manufacturer claims and editorial picks answer different questions: specifications describe what a product is designed to offer, while a reviewer’s “best” label is that publication’s judgment.

Model Why it is relevant What to check
AirPods 5 The open-fit reference point for this comparison. Whether its fit suits you, and whether its noise control and phone-specific features meet your needs.
AirPods Pro 3 A sealed-fit Apple option for shoppers who want silicone tips and stronger isolation. Try the tip fit if possible. Apple says Pro 3 provides “up to 3x more Active Noise Cancellation” than AirPods 5 when tested in accordance with IEC 60268-24; this is Apple’s comparative claim, not an independent head-to-head result. Apple’s AirPods comparison
AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation An open-fit Apple alternative for someone who wants to avoid silicone tips while considering ANC. Compare its fit and noise control directly with the models you are considering. What Hi-Fi?’s comparison, published February 4, 2026, describes its open design.
Samsung Galaxy Buds4 Pro A useful sealed-fit comparison for Samsung and Android shoppers. Some features depend on compatible Galaxy devices and software; check the requirements for your own phone. Samsung’s product page
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) A cross-brand option to consider when noise cancellation is a leading priority. TechRadar names it its best noise-cancelling pick in its earbuds roundup. That is TechRadar’s editorial choice, not a guarantee that it will be best for every listener.

How do fit and ear tips change the decision?

Open-fit earbuds sit at the entrance of the ear without a silicone tip sealing the canal. Sealed in-ear models use tips to create a closer fit. Neither design is inherently more comfortable for everyone: ears differ, and an uncomfortable or loose fit can make a pair impractical regardless of its specification sheet.

  • Choose an open design if you dislike the feeling of silicone tips or prefer not to seal the ear canal.
  • Consider a sealed design if you want the physical isolation that comes with a tip creating a seal.
  • Try the fit when possible. A poor seal can affect perceived isolation, so noise-cancellation comparisons are more meaningful when the earbuds fit correctly.

How should you compare ANC and awareness modes?

Active noise cancellation (ANC) reduces outside sound; transparency or ambient modes are intended to let more of it through. Adaptive and conversation features are separate functions, not interchangeable names for ANC. Decide which situation matters most to you—such as commuting, quiet listening or hearing people nearby—and compare the relevant mode rather than relying on a single “noise control” label.

  • Up to 32 (8h + 24h) hours of battery life and speed charging: With 8 hours of battery life in the earbuds and 24 in the case, the JBL Vibe Beam provide all-day audio. When you need more power, you can speed charge an extra two hours in just 10 minutes.
  • Hands-free calls with VoiceAware: When you're making hands-free stereo calls on the go, VoiceAware lets you balance how much of your own voice you hear while talking with others
  • Water and dust resistant: From the beach to the bike trail, the IP54-certified earbuds and IPX2 charging case are water and dust resistant for all-day experiences

Apple’s “up to 3x” Pro 3 comparison is tied to the IEC 60268-24 test condition stated by Apple. Treat it as a manufacturer claim with that test and comparator attached, not as a promise of three times the perceived quiet in every setting. When independent ANC measurements are available, compare models tested under comparable procedures and conditions.

How can you compare battery life fairly?

Battery figures are only useful side by side when their conditions are clear. Check whether a number means listening time on one charge or total time with the case, and whether ANC, spatial audio or other features were enabled. Manufacturer figures produced under different test conditions do not constitute a common lab comparison.

Will the earbuds’ best features work with your phone?

Phone ecosystem can matter as much as the earbuds themselves. Before buying, verify that the specific feature you care about works with your device, operating system and required app; a feature name on a product page does not mean every phone gets it.

For iPhone users

Check which Apple-specific features are available with your iPhone and software version. Do not assume that a competitor’s headline audio feature is available on iOS simply because the earbuds can connect to an iPhone.

For Samsung and other Android users

Samsung says Galaxy Buds4 Pro UHQ audio up to 24-bit/96 kHz is available only on specified Galaxy device families and supported software. Its US product page also says the Galaxy Wearable app is not supported on iOS. These are limited-availability claims, not universal Android or cross-platform promises. Samsung’s February 25, 2026 launch announcement also notes that Super Wideband calls depend on the device and mobile network.

What sound, call, case and durability details matter?

Manufacturer feature claims and listening or call-test results are different kinds of evidence. Sound is personal, and call quality can vary with the phone, calling app, network and surroundings. If calls are important, look for tests involving your likely setup or try the earbuds in the apps you use.

Compare the case and physical protections model by model. Look for the charging method, any case tracking or speaker feature, the available controls, and each product’s own water- and dust-resistance rating. Do not infer that a feature or rating on one model applies to another product in the same brand’s range.

How should price affect the choice?

Check the current price in your market at the time you buy. A launch price is historical context, not a current offer, and local discounts can change which model represents better value. What Hi-Fi?’s February 4, 2026 comparison records these launch prices:

Model UK launch price US launch price Australian launch price
AirPods 4 with ANC £179 $179 AU$299
AirPods Pro 3 £219 $249 AU$429

These are region-specific launch figures reported by What Hi-Fi? in February 2026, not verified current street prices. The source also notes discounts; check local retailers for today’s price.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Decide on fit: open earbuds or a sealed tip, based on what you can comfortably wear.
  2. Choose the noise-control priority: ANC, awareness of surroundings, or a balance of the two.
  3. Check your phone: confirm compatibility for the particular features you intend to use.
  4. Normalize the specifications: compare battery figures only with their charge basis and test settings in view.
  5. Inspect the model-specific details: controls, case functions and water- or dust-resistance rating.
  6. Compare local prices: use current offers rather than relying on launch prices or a reviewer’s value judgment.
  7. Try before committing if you can: fit and sound are personal, and neither can be settled by a specification alone.
