How to Cool a Server in a Small Networking Closet

Measure conditions at equipment intakes, confirm airflow direction, and make sure hot air can leave the closet before adding a fan or dedicated cooling.

Measure temperature and humidity at the equipment’s air intakes, then make sure each device can draw in cooler air and discharge hot air without obstruction or recirculation. A fan can improve airflow, but it cannot cool a sealed closet unless heat can leave and cooler replacement air can enter. If inlet conditions remain outside the equipment maker’s requirements, consider dedicated cooling or an HVAC assessment.

How to cool a server closet: start at the equipment intakes

A thermostat across the room may not reflect the warmer air reaching a server or switch. Check conditions near the equipment’s air inlets, especially while the devices are under their normal workload. ASHRAE’s datacom guidance focuses environmental recommendations on conditions at equipment inlets and treats measurement of the equipment environment as part of thermal management (ASHRAE datacom series).

Use a temperature-and-humidity monitor placed near the intake as a diagnostic tool. It can reveal whether conditions change after you rearrange equipment or improve ventilation; it does not remove heat from the closet.

Check airflow direction and clear the air path

Identify where each device takes in air and where it exhausts it. Most datacom equipment is cooled from front to rear, but some legacy telecommunications equipment and switches use different or mixed airflow paths. Check the manufacturer’s documentation rather than assuming that all devices face the same way (ASHRAE datacom series).

  • Keep the intake and exhaust openings clear of cables, stored items, doors and other equipment.
  • Arrange devices so hot exhaust does not flow directly back into an intake.
  • If a device’s airflow conflicts with the rack layout, consider a suitable rack arrangement or air deflector.
  • Recheck inlet conditions after changes; an apparently tidy rack is not proof that equipment is receiving cooler air.

When a fan helps—and when it does not

A rack fan panel or cabinet fan can assist air movement when there is a real route for hot air to leave and cooler replacement air to enter. It is not a substitute for removing heat from the closet. In an enclosed space with no exhaust route, a fan may simply circulate the same warmed air.

Before adding a fan, establish both sides of the airflow path: where replacement air comes from and where heated air goes. The right arrangement depends on the closet and building; opening the door is not a universal solution because building airflow, security and environmental conditions vary.

Compare ventilation with dedicated cooling

Ventilation and air management may be enough when cooler replacement air is available and heated air can be exhausted without feeding back into equipment intakes. Dedicated cooling may be needed when the closet’s inlet conditions remain too warm despite a workable airflow path. Compare the options using the conditions at the equipment, not a guessed fan rating or a generic room-temperature target.

Decision factor Ventilation and air management Dedicated cooling
Equipment inlet temperature under load Check whether it stays within the installed equipment’s requirements. Assess whether cooling can maintain the required inlet conditions.
Air path Needs a route for hot air to leave and cooler replacement air to enter. Must be planned for the closet and its heat load.
Airflow compatibility Must suit each device’s intake and exhaust direction. Must avoid hot-air recirculation at equipment intakes.
Humidity and condensation Check conditions against equipment requirements. Consider humidity and condensation risks in the installation.
Installation and operating cost Depends on site requirements. Depends on site requirements.

The information available here does not establish a universal cost winner or a fan CFM or air-conditioning capacity suitable for every closet. Sizing depends on equipment heat load, actual room conditions, airflow and how heat can leave the space. For persistent overheating or uncertain building constraints, consult an HVAC professional.

Use equipment-specific temperature and humidity requirements

Follow the environmental limits for the installed servers, switches and other devices. ASHRAE’s recommended envelope varies with equipment class and manufacturer specifications; it is not a single guaranteed limit for every device. Eaton’s buying guide summarizes an ASHRAE operating range of 18° to 27°C (64° to 81°F), but that secondary summary should not replace the applicable equipment documentation or current ASHRAE guidance (Eaton UPS buying guide; ASHRAE datacom series).

Apply the same care to humidity: use the environmental envelope specified for the equipment, including any noncondensing requirement. Do not infer a datacom humidity target from ordinary room-comfort advice.

Verify the result after making changes

  1. Place a temperature-and-humidity monitor near equipment air intakes.
  2. Record inlet conditions while the equipment is operating under its normal workload.
  3. Make one airflow change at a time, such as clearing an obstruction or improving the exhaust route.
  4. Measure again at the same intake locations and compare the readings with each device’s requirements.
  5. If inlet conditions remain out of range, seek a site-specific assessment for dedicated cooling or other changes.
