Identity theft can involve much more than a Social Security number. Names and addresses, financial and medical account details, government IDs, and online login credentials can all be misused. What a thief can do with any one piece of information depends on the account or service targeted and what other details or access they have.
What counts as personal data for identity theft?
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) defines identity theft as “Identity theft is when someone uses your personal or financial information without your permission.” The information involved can be used to impersonate you, access an existing account, or seek credit, services, benefits, or medical care in your name.

There is no single minimum set of details required for every kind of identity theft. A name or address alone does not automatically let someone open credit or take over an account; the risk depends on the target and any other information or access available.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Identifying details: name, address, and date of birth.
- Financial details: credit-card and bank-account numbers, as well as account information.
- Government and physical ID: Social Security number (SSN), driver’s license, passport, and cards such as a bank card.
- Health information: medical-insurance account numbers and health-insurance cards.
- Account access: usernames, passwords, and access to a device or authentication method. The FTC notes that multifactor authentication (MFA), such as a one-time passcode or biometric check, makes it harder for a scammer to log in even with a username and password.
These details can support different kinds of fraud, including new credit or utility accounts, unauthorized purchases, tax-refund theft, employment or benefits applications, medical care, and impersonation. A credit report cannot show every type of identity misuse.

How can thieves get personal information?
Information can be taken through physical theft, discarded records, or digital deception. USA.gov lists methods including wallet or mail theft, rummaging through financial or tax documents, card skimming at ATMs or payment locations, phishing by email, text, or phone, information exposed on social media, and risks when using public Wi-Fi. The FTC also warns against unsolicited contacts that ask for personal information. These are examples of methods, not a ranking of how often each occurs.
How can you reduce the risk?
Limit when you share an SSN
If an organization asks for your SSN, ask why it needs it, how it will be protected, whether another identifier is acceptable, or whether the last four digits are enough. Do not reply to an unsolicited call, email, or text asking for personal information; contact the organization through a channel you know is genuine.

- SECURE YOUR WALLET FROM e-PICKPOCKETING: Prevent potential identity and financial theft through your contactless cards. This is the simplest and most effective prevention solution! Block RFID and NFC signals, protect your personal information, and enjoy peace of mind wherever your travels or business take you.
- JAMMING CHIP: An antenna and jamming chip makes up the main components of the card. The antenna will sense incoming radio waves and draw power for the chip to create a jamming signal. Lifetime usage as the card does not require battery.
- BROAD WORKING DISTANCE: With a 2.4” working distance, your entire wallet stays protected. The premium RFID blocking card helps secure cards within 1.2” on either side, providing reliable protection against electronic pickpocketing.
- ULTRA-THIN & COMPACT: At the size of a standard credit card and at only 0.03” thick, the card will fit into any wallet, purse or card case. Keep your wallet compact with no added bulk from this card. Best for travel, business, and everyday use.
- TEST THE CARD: Test the card is working at your local supermarket. At the self-service checkout machines, combine the card and a contactless card on the payment reader. Payment with the contactless card will be blocked and an error message should occur on the reader.
Protect paper records and mail
Keep financial records, SSN and Medicare cards, and other sensitive documents in a secure place. Retrieve mail promptly, and shred documents with sensitive information before throwing them away. A paper shredder can help with that specific task; it does not protect data stored online.
Secure online accounts
Use strong, unique passwords and turn on MFA wherever it is available. If a breach exposes an account password, change it for that account and for any other account where you reused it. Check financial accounts if payment details were stored in the affected service. See IdentityTheft.gov’s recovery steps for guidance on responding to lost or exposed information.

Choose between a credit freeze and a fraud alert
Both measures concern applications for new credit, but they work differently. A freeze restricts access to your credit report; a fraud alert asks businesses to take steps to verify your identity before opening credit. Neither prevents every form of identity theft.
| Measure | What it does | How to place it | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit freeze | Restricts access to your credit report, making it harder for someone to open a new credit account. | Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion individually. The FTC says freezes are free. | You may need to lift it temporarily when applying for credit or another service that checks your credit. |
| Initial fraud alert | Asks businesses to verify your identity when someone applies for credit in your name. | Contact one of the three credit bureaus; it must notify the other two. | The initial alert lasts one year, according to the FTC. |
For more detail on these protections, see IdentityTheft.gov’s guide to your rights.

Review accounts and records
Check bank and card statements, bills, and credit reports for activity you do not recognize. Credit monitoring can alert you to changes on the credit reports it covers, but the FTC says it will not alert you to bank-account withdrawals or someone filing a tax return to claim a refund. Monitoring is therefore not a substitute for reviewing account activity directly.

- Secure access. Change relevant passwords and PINs, including passwords reused on other accounts.
- Use IdentityTheft.gov. The FTC-hosted service can help you file a report and create a recovery plan. Its guidance also recommends a free one-year fraud alert and reviewing your credit reports.
- Keep a record. Save copies of letters and messages, and note dates, names, and case numbers for calls.
- Follow the steps for the type of fraud. Credit, bank accounts, taxes, medical records, benefits, and other cases may require different contacts and actions.
Start with IdentityTheft.gov’s recovery steps; if account credentials or an SSN were exposed in a breach, consult its guidance for lost, stolen, or exposed information.
What can paid identity-monitoring services do—and miss?
Services sold as credit monitoring, identity monitoring, recovery assistance, or identity-theft insurance cover different things. Before paying, check which credit bureaus and records are monitored, what triggers an alert, what recovery help is included, and what costs or limits apply. The FTC cautions that identity monitoring has gaps, including many government-benefit claims; recovery services may help with paperwork, but people can complete some recovery tasks themselves for little or no cost. Insurance generally concerns certain out-of-pocket recovery expenses and typically does not reimburse money stolen by scammers. Treat these services as optional tools, not a guarantee against identity theft.
