AirPods 5 adds Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) to both configurations, while AirPods 4 came in a standard version and an ANC version. The bigger choice within the new lineup is whether to pay more for the Wireless Charging Case, which adds wireless charging, a case speaker for Find My, on-stem volume control, and slightly longer battery life. Apple’s noise-cancellation and battery figures are manufacturer claims, not independent test results.
What changed from AirPods 4 to AirPods 5?
The main change is broader ANC availability: both AirPods 5 configurations include it. To compare like with like, distinguish standard AirPods 4 from AirPods 4 with ANC. Apple says AirPods 5 removes up to 50 percent more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC; its comparison page describes the result as up to 1.5 times more ANC when tested under IEC 60268-24. These are Apple’s claims and test framing, not an independent measurement. Apple’s announcement attributes the change to a new multiport acoustic architecture and improved computational audio algorithms.

Apple also describes a more natural Transparency mode, Adaptive Audio that blends ANC and Transparency according to surroundings, and Conversation Awareness that lowers media volume when the wearer begins speaking. It says the new multiport acoustic architecture and next-generation Adaptive EQ improve sound across a wider range of ear geometries, and describes Personalized Spatial Audio as more immersive and dynamic. These are product descriptions and performance claims; the available evidence does not establish independent comparative listening results.

Prices are Apple’s US launch prices announced September 9, 2026—not current-price quotes. Battery figures are Apple’s “up to” estimates; the comparison page notes preproduction testing and says results vary with settings, environment, and use. Its figures distinguish listening on one charge from total listening time with the case. Apple’s comparison page lists the charging compatibility and feature details. USB-C charging requires a compatible charger; wireless charging requires a Qi-certified charger, and the case also works with Apple Watch chargers.

How does AirPods 5 compare with AirPods 4?
AirPods 4 was sold in standard and ANC configurations, so whether AirPods 5 is a meaningful step depends on which version you own or are considering. Standard AirPods 4 does not have ANC; the ANC model is the relevant baseline for Apple’s noise-cancellation comparison. Apple lists up to 4 hours of ANC listening on one charge and up to 20 hours with the case for AirPods 4 with ANC. Those match the base AirPods 5 figures in Apple’s comparison, while the AirPods 5 Wireless Charging Case version is listed at up to 5 hours per charge and 22 hours with the case.
The practical distinction is therefore not simply “new versus old.” AirPods 5 makes ANC standard across its two configurations, but the step from AirPods 4 with ANC to base AirPods 5 does not represent a listed increase in ANC battery life. The higher AirPods 5 configuration adds case and control conveniences as well as the longer listed battery estimates. For ANC itself, Apple advertises an improvement over AirPods 4 with ANC, but the figure should be treated as a vendor claim rather than a confirmed real-world advantage.

Is AirPods 5 worth upgrading to?
- Consider AirPods 5 if you want ANC and your current AirPods 4 are the standard version, or if Apple’s stated ANC improvement is a priority for you.
- Consider the Wireless Charging Case version if Qi or Apple Watch charging, the case speaker for Find My, on-stem volume control, or the extra listed battery time matters enough to justify its higher price.
- Keep AirPods 4 with ANC or seek a discounted pair if it meets your needs and the price gap is substantial. In September 2026, MacRumors reported Apple had stopped selling both AirPods 4 versions directly while third-party listings remained available; stock and prices can change. MacRumors’ buyer’s guide reported that retail context at the time.
There is no universal upgrade verdict without knowing the price you can actually get and how much you value ANC, charging convenience, and stem controls. Apple announced AirPods 5 on September 9, 2026, with availability beginning September 18; current street prices and stock are not established by those launch details.
