Every AirPods 5 configuration includes active noise cancellation (ANC), while the base AirPods 4 has none. AirPods 5 also raise water and dust resistance from IP54 to IP57, add volume swiping on the stem, and offer a more capable charging case. The upgrade is less urgent for owners of AirPods 4 with ANC because those earbuds already use the H2 chip, Bluetooth 5.3, an open-ear fit and a similar ANC battery rating.
AirPods 5 vs. AirPods 4: the short answer
Choose AirPods 5 if you are buying new, upgrading from base AirPods 4, or specifically want ANC, stronger water resistance, volume controls and the newer case features. Choose AirPods 4 with ANC instead only when its lower sale price is substantial and you are satisfied with its fit and performance.

There are two AirPods 5 configurations: a standard USB-C charging case and a Wireless Charging Case. Both have ANC. The wireless-case version adds Qi and Apple Watch charging, a Find My speaker and a longer rated battery life. AirPods 4 also come in two versions, but only the ANC version has noise cancellation.

What changed from AirPods 4 to AirPods 5?
| Feature | AirPods 5 | AirPods 4 |
|---|---|---|
| Active noise cancellation | Included on both configurations | Only the AirPods 4 with ANC includes it; base AirPods 4 has no ANC |
| Apple chip | H2 | H2 on both AirPods 4 versions |
| Bluetooth | Bluetooth 5.3 | Bluetooth 5.3 |
| Fit | Open-ear design | Open-ear design |
| Water and dust resistance | IP57 | IP54 on both versions |
| Stem control | Force controls plus volume swipe | Force-sensor controls; Apple does not list volume swipe |
| Case choices | USB-C case or Wireless Charging Case | USB-C case; the ANC model’s case includes its listed ANC-related features |
The biggest day-to-day difference is not the processor. AirPods 5 bring ANC to the entire line, while the base AirPods 4 leaves it out. The other meaningful changes are physical protection, stem controls and the charging-case options.

Noise cancellation: do AirPods 5 block more sound?
Apple claims AirPods 5 deliver “up to 1.5x more Active Noise Cancellation compared with AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation when tested in accordance with IEC 60268-24.” That is Apple’s controlled test claim, not a promise that every listener will hear 1.5 times the reduction in every environment.
Because AirPods use an open-ear fit, the seal around your ear is different from the seal created by in-ear earbuds with silicone tips. Fit, ear shape, background noise and the quality of the recording all affect the result. The practical question is whether the improvement matters for your normal commute, office, travel or exercise routine.
Against base AirPods 4
This is the largest ANC difference in the comparison. Base AirPods 4 have no ANC, so AirPods 5 can reduce steady external noise while you listen. If you regularly use public transit, airplanes, busy offices or gyms, that alone can justify the upgrade.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

The difference is incremental rather than transformational. Both models use the H2 chip, Bluetooth 5.3 and an open-ear design. AirPods 5 have Apple’s claimed ANC advantage, but the shared platform means owners of AirPods 4 with ANC should upgrade for a specific benefit rather than expecting a completely new listening experience.
In Tom’s Guide’s review, AirPods 5 had slightly better ANC than AirPods 4 with ANC. That publication’s reviewer considered the result an audible improvement, but it was an individual review observation rather than a laboratory measurement.
Battery life and charging cases
| Model | Rated listening time with ANC | Rated total time with case | Case charging |
|---|---|---|---|
| AirPods 5, standard case | Up to 4 hours | Up to 20 hours | USB-C |
| AirPods 5, Wireless Charging Case | Up to 5 hours | Up to 22 hours | USB-C, Qi-certified charger, Apple Watch charger |
| AirPods 4 with ANC | Up to 4 hours | Up to 20 hours | USB-C case |
| Base AirPods 4 | ANC is not available | Up to 30 hours | USB-C case |
These are Apple’s “up to” ratings under its stated test conditions. Actual time changes with volume, feature use, conversation detection and other settings. The standard AirPods 5 and AirPods 4 with ANC have the same rated four hours with ANC and 20 hours with the case. The Wireless Charging Case version of AirPods 5 is rated for five hours with ANC and 22 hours including the case.

Base AirPods 4 last longer on paper because they do not run ANC: Apple rates them for up to five hours per charge and up to 30 hours with the case. That figure is not a like-for-like ANC comparison.

Durability: IP57 versus IP54
AirPods 5 are rated IP57 for dust and water resistance. AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with ANC are rated IP54. A higher rating gives AirPods 5 more protection against water exposure and dust, which is useful for workouts, commuting and unpredictable weather.
Apple says these products are intended for non-water sports and exercise. The resistance is not permanent; Apple also warns that it can decrease with normal wear. Do not treat IP57 as permission to swim, shower with the earbuds or deliberately submerge them. Dry the earbuds and case before charging if they become wet.
Controls and everyday handling
AirPods 5 add volume swipe controls on the stem. You can adjust volume with a gesture instead of reaching for your phone or asking Siri. They retain the force-based stem controls used for common actions such as play, pause and calls.
AirPods 4 use force-sensor controls, but Apple’s comparison does not list the AirPods 5-style volume swipe for either AirPods 4 version. If you frequently change volume while your phone is in a pocket or bag, this is a small feature that becomes useful quickly.

AirPods 5 with the standard case
The standard AirPods 5 package uses a USB-C charging case. It is the lower-cost way to get AirPods 5 ANC, IP57 protection and volume swipe. It is the sensible configuration if you already charge over USB-C and do not use Qi or Apple Watch charging.

AirPods 5 with the Wireless Charging Case
The Wireless Charging Case can charge through USB-C, a Qi-certified charger or an Apple Watch charger. It also contains a speaker for locating the case with Find My. In addition to those convenience features, Apple rates this version for one extra hour of ANC listening and two extra hours of total listening with the case compared with the standard AirPods 5 configuration.
Those additions are hardware differences in the case, not improvements to the earbuds’ chip or fit. If you rarely use wireless charging and do not need case locating, the standard case avoids paying for features you may not use.
Sound, calls and software features
Apple’s current comparison lists the H2 chip, Bluetooth 5.3, Personalized Spatial Audio, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness and Voice Isolation for the relevant AirPods 5 and AirPods 4 configurations where supported. These shared platform features mean AirPods 4 with ANC do not fall behind on the main Apple ecosystem capabilities.
Tom’s Guide reported that AirPods 5 sounded better to its reviewer, with cleaner treble and more controlled bass. The same review found call quality effectively tied between AirPods 5 and AirPods 4 with ANC. Its scorecard gave AirPods 5 77 out of 100 and AirPods 4 with ANC 68 out of 100. Those scores and listening impressions are one reviewer’s observations, not standardized laboratory results.
Personalized Spatial Audio, Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness can be valuable if you use Apple devices that support them. They should not, however, be treated as reasons to replace working AirPods 4 with ANC by themselves, because those models share the same H2-based feature platform.
Fit: the open-ear decision comes first
AirPods 5 and AirPods 4 use an open-ear design. That fit lets some outside sound remain audible and avoids the sealed sensation many people dislike, but it also means your ear shape strongly affects stability, bass response and perceived noise cancellation.

If your current AirPods 4 sit securely and comfortably, AirPods 5 should be familiar. If your AirPods 4 loosen during movement, changing to AirPods 5 is not guaranteed to solve the problem because the basic open-ear approach remains. Conversely, if you prefer awareness of surrounding sounds, both generations preserve that character better than a fully sealed design.
Try the fit before committing when possible. A better ANC specification cannot compensate for earbuds that do not stay in your ears or that create pressure during long sessions.
US pricing and value
Tom’s Guide checked US prices in 2026 at $124 for AirPods 5 with the standard case and $149 for the Wireless Charging Case model. It also found AirPods 4 with ANC at a $149 sale price against a $179 manufacturer suggested retail price. Prices, promotions and stock can change, so treat those figures as a dated comparison rather than a permanent price list.
| Configuration | US price in Tom’s Guide’s 2026 check | Best value case |
|---|---|---|
| AirPods 5, standard case | $124 | Lowest-cost route to AirPods 5 ANC, IP57 and volume swipe |
| AirPods 5, Wireless Charging Case | $149 | Worth the premium when wireless charging, Find My case locating or extra battery rating matters |
| AirPods 4 with ANC | $149 sale price, $179 MSRP | Reasonable only when discounted and the existing feature set meets your needs |
At that check, the standard AirPods 5 undercut the discounted AirPods 4 with ANC while adding the newer case generation, IP57 rating and volume swipe. The wireless-case AirPods 5 matched the AirPods 4 with ANC sale price but offered more case functionality. Recheck the live price before buying because a sale can reverse the value calculation.
Should you upgrade from base AirPods 4?
Usually, yes, if you want ANC or stronger protection. Base AirPods 4 have no ANC, IP54 rather than IP57 and no listed volume swipe. AirPods 5 provide all three improvements while keeping the H2 chip, Bluetooth 5.3 and open-ear approach.
- Upgrade when you commute, fly, work in noisy rooms or exercise outdoors and want ANC.
- Upgrade when sweat, rain and dust exposure make the IP57 rating worthwhile.
- Upgrade when you want stem-based volume adjustment or a Find My speaker in the case.
- Keep base AirPods 4 when you prefer their five-hour single-charge and 30-hour case ratings and do not need ANC.
The battery comparison is important: base AirPods 4 last longer because ANC is absent. If your priority is maximum runtime and you intentionally listen without noise cancellation, AirPods 4 can still be the better fit.

Should owners of AirPods 4 with ANC upgrade?
Only for a defined improvement. AirPods 4 with ANC already provide ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency, Conversation Awareness, the H2 chip, Bluetooth 5.3, an open-ear fit and a four-hour ANC rating with 20 hours from the case. That makes the practical leap to AirPods 5 modest.
Reasons to move to AirPods 5
- You want Apple’s claimed up-to-1.5x ANC improvement over AirPods 4 with ANC.
- You need IP57 rather than IP54 protection.
- You regularly adjust volume and want the new stem swipe.
- You want the Wireless Charging Case, Apple Watch charging, Qi charging or a Find My speaker.
- The current sale price makes replacement inexpensive after considering the features you will use.
Reasons to keep AirPods 4 with ANC
- The earbuds fit securely and sound good to you.
- You are satisfied with four hours of ANC listening and 20 hours from the case.
- You do not need IP57, volume swipe or wireless case charging.
- The AirPods 5 price is close to full retail while your current pair remains reliable.
A working pair of AirPods 4 with ANC is not made obsolete by AirPods 5. The shared H2 and Bluetooth 5.3 platform preserves most ecosystem functions, so replace the older pair when a specific hardware improvement solves a real problem.
Which AirPods 5 case should you buy?
Choose the standard case when
- You want the lowest purchase price.
- You already use USB-C and rarely charge wirelessly.
- You do not need to locate the case with a built-in speaker.
- The standard model’s four-hour ANC and 20-hour total ratings meet your routine.
Choose the Wireless Charging Case when
- Your desk or bedside charger is Qi-certified.
- You already use an Apple Watch charger and want one charging option for both devices.
- You sometimes misplace the case and want the Find My speaker.
- You value the five-hour ANC and 22-hour total ratings.
The earbuds themselves are the same AirPods 5 generation in both packages. The premium pays for the case’s charging, locating and battery differences.

A practical buying checklist
- Identify your current model. Base AirPods 4 have no ANC; AirPods 4 with ANC already have the H2 platform and similar battery ratings to standard AirPods 5.
- Decide whether ANC is essential. If yes, eliminate base AirPods 4 from consideration.
- Check fit before specifications. AirPods 5 retain an open-ear design, so a familiar fit is a major advantage for existing AirPods owners.
- Choose the protection level. Select AirPods 5 for IP57; accept IP54 on AirPods 4 when your use is mostly dry, everyday listening.
- Choose your case. Pick standard USB-C for the lowest price; pick the Wireless Charging Case for Qi, Apple Watch charging, Find My locating and the higher battery rating.
- Compare the live US price. The cited $124, $149 and $149-sale figures were checked by Tom’s Guide in 2026 and can change.
- Set expectations for ANC. Apple’s 1.5x statement is a tested maximum claim under IEC 60268-24, not a guarantee of identical improvement for every listener.
Common reasons an upgrade disappoints
Expecting a completely new platform
AirPods 5 do not replace the H2 ecosystem with a dramatically different architecture. AirPods 4 with ANC owners receive refinements and hardware conveniences, not a wholesale change in software features.
Assuming IP57 means waterproof
IP57 is a stronger rating than IP54, but Apple still positions the earbuds for non-water sports and exercise and warns that resistance declines with wear. Deliberate submersion, swimming and charging while wet remain poor practices.
Buying the wireless case without using it
The Wireless Charging Case is valuable only if you use its charging methods, locating speaker or extra rated battery. Otherwise the standard AirPods 5 package delivers the same earbuds and core features for less.
Ignoring the open-ear fit
ANC performance and bass depend partly on how the earbuds sit in your ears. A specification advantage cannot overcome a loose or uncomfortable fit.

| Buyer | Best choice | Why |

| New buyer using Qi or Apple Watch charging | AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case | Adds wireless charging options, Find My speaker and higher battery ratings |
| Base AirPods 4 owner | AirPods 5 | Largest functional gain comes from adding ANC and IP57 |
| AirPods 4 with ANC owner satisfied with fit | Keep current earbuds | H2, Bluetooth 5.3, open-ear fit and similar ANC battery life reduce the upgrade’s urgency |
| AirPods 4 with ANC owner wanting stronger ANC or case features | AirPods 5 | Apple’s claimed ANC improvement, IP57, volume swipe and new case options address specific needs |
| Listener who does not want ANC and prioritizes runtime | Base AirPods 4 | Five hours per charge and 30 hours with the case, with no ANC power draw |
For most shoppers starting from zero, AirPods 5 offer the more complete package. For owners of AirPods 4 with ANC, buy only when the ANC claim, IP57 protection, volume swipe, wireless case or current price solves a problem you actually have.
