AirPods 5 bring active noise cancellation (ANC) to Apple’s open-ear, silicone-tip-free design, and both variants include it. They’re a compelling value if you want that fit, use Apple devices and find them at a good local price. The fixed shape will not suit every ear, and the open fit is not the best choice if you need a sealed fit or strong low-frequency isolation.
What are AirPods 5, and which versions have ANC?
Apple announced AirPods 5 in September 2026. Its Australia newsroom announcement says retail availability began September 18 in Australia and more than 65 other countries and regions. Both versions have ANC; the main difference is the charging case and controls.

Apple lists an open-ear design, dual beamforming microphones and IP57 dust, sweat and water resistance. That rating is not a promise that the earbuds are waterproof for every activity. How effective is AirPods 5 noise cancellation?
Apple says AirPods 5 reduce up to 50 percent more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC; its product page also describes them as up to 1.5 times better at blocking noise than the previous generation. These are Apple’s own comparative claims, not a guarantee of the result every listener will get. Apple says its comparison test took place in July 2026 with AirPods 5 paired to an iPhone 17, prerelease firmware and iOS 27, following IEC 60268-24. The comparison was against bestselling wireless open-ear headphones commercially available at the time, and Apple notes results depend on settings, environment and other factors.

Independent reviews give a more practical picture. RTINGS found ANC performed very well against airplane, street and conversation noise in its testing, while noting low-frequency engine rumble and the fixed fit as considerations. Tom’s Guide found ANC good for earbuds without silicone tips, but reported that some high-frequency sounds—including horns and indistinct chatter—remained audible during its listening test. ANC can make an open-ear design more useful in noisy places, but it does not turn the fit into a sealed earbud. If strong isolation from low-frequency noise is your priority, compare sealed in-ear options before buying.
Will the open-ear fit suit you?
AirPods 5 avoid silicone tips, which may appeal if you dislike the pressure or feel of in-ear buds. The trade-off is a fixed shape: there are no tips to swap to adjust the seal or fit, so comfort and stability depend on whether the shape suits your ears.

RTINGS describes the earbuds as light and suitable for walking or moderate exercise when the fit works, but less suitable for some intense movement. If your earbuds often loosen during exercise, or you want an adjustable, sealed fit, this design is a riskier choice. Try them if possible and check the retailer’s return policy.
How long does the battery last?
For AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case, Apple rates playback at up to five hours per charge with ANC on and up to 22 hours with the case. RTINGS measured 5.1 hours of continuous playback and 22.5 hours including case recharges for the Wireless Charging Case unit it tested. Apple’s figures are manufacturer ratings; RTINGS’ are results from its test, so neither guarantees your runtime.
RTINGS considers the earbuds compact for travel, but notes that the per-charge battery may call for a top-up on longer trips. If you need long uninterrupted listening, that is a meaningful limitation even if you can recharge from the case.

What do AirPods 5 cost, and is the wireless case worth extra?
Prices vary by market and date. Apple’s September 2026 Australian announcement listed recommended retail prices including GST of A$219 for AirPods 5 and A$249 for AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case. Tom’s Guide reported U.S. prices of $124 and $149, respectively, and U.K. prices of £119 and £139 at the time of its review. These are dated figures, not a promise of today’s local retailer price; check current prices where you live.
Choose the standard version if USB-C charging is enough and you do not need stem volume swipe or the wireless case’s charging and location features. The Wireless Charging Case variant makes more sense if you will use Qi or Apple Watch charging, or value those added controls and case features. Compare the actual price difference in your market rather than assuming the more expensive case is automatically a better deal.
Who should buy AirPods 5?
- Consider them if you prefer an open fit without silicone tips, want ANC, use Apple devices and can get a price that suits your budget.
- Consider the standard version if you only need a USB-C case and want to avoid paying extra for wireless charging and stem volume controls.
- Consider the Wireless Charging Case version if you will use its Qi or Apple Watch charging, stem volume swipe or case speaker and location support.
- Look elsewhere if you need a secure sealed fit, better isolation from low-frequency noise, or longer uninterrupted playback between charges.
Are Apple’s software features available to everyone?
Apple’s launch announcement promotes Siri AI, head-gesture responses and Live Translation, but availability depends on supported Apple devices, current operating systems and firmware, languages and regions. Apple says Siri AI is rolling out in beta and was initially unavailable in the EU; some features are also unavailable in some languages or regions. Check Apple’s current compatibility and regional availability information before treating any of these features as part of your buying decision.
