AirPods 5 bring active noise cancellation (ANC) to Apple’s open-fit earbuds, and the result is useful for softening background rumble without silicone tips. But the fit leaves sound paths open, so voices and announcements can still come through; sealed earbuds provide stronger isolation. The $129 standard-case model is the lower-cost choice, while the $149 wireless-charging-case version adds wireless charging, stem volume swipe, and longer stated battery life. Those are US launch prices, not a guarantee of current retail pricing.
Are AirPods 5 worth it?
They are worth considering if you prefer earbuds without silicone tips and want Apple features with some reduction in everyday background noise. ANC is a meaningful addition for an open-fit design, but it is not a substitute for the isolation of a sealed earbud. Battery life with ANC is also limited for long stretches away from a charging case.

No. AirPods 5 use an open-fit design and do not include silicone ear tips. That can suit listeners who dislike the pressure or plugged-ear feeling of in-ear tips, but it also means the earbuds do not form a passive seal.

Fit varies by ear. Reviewers found that placement affects comfort, sound, and how much noise cancellation a listener perceives. If possible, try them before committing; a loose or unstable fit can make both listening and ANC less satisfying.
How good is the AirPods 5 noise cancellation?
ANC is helpful for reducing low-level background noise and general rumble, but it cannot block every sound around an open ear. T3 reported that train rumble and background noise were suppressed while announcements remained audible. Tom’s Guide characterized the improvement over AirPods 4 with ANC as slight in its direct comparison and said neither pair delivers the isolation of silicone-tip models.

SoundGuys reported a 59% average reduction in perceived loudness in its testing, but cautioned that open-fit placement varies and that the figure is a general guide, not a guaranteed result for every listener. Its review units were purchased and tested over four days.

In practical terms, ANC is most useful when you want to take the edge off steady environmental noise while remaining less isolated than you would be with sealed earbuds. If blocking voices, announcements, or other changing sounds is a priority, choose a sealed design instead.
AirPods 5 vs. AirPods 4 ANC: what the comparison tells you
Apple’s stated noise-reduction improvement is a comparison against AirPods 4 with ANC, but Tom’s Guide found the difference slight in its direct review comparison. Neither set’s open fit creates the same passive isolation as silicone-tip earbuds. The available findings do not establish a universal winner across ears or listening environments.

Which AirPods 5 case should you buy?

The $20 launch-price difference buys the charging option, stem volume swipe, and an extra hour of stated maximum listening time with ANC on. Choose the standard configuration if keeping the upfront cost down matters more; pay the premium if you will use those added conveniences. Apple lists ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, Personalized Spatial Audio, Adaptive EQ, and an H2 chip for AirPods 5.

How long does the battery last?
Apple lists up to four hours of listening with ANC on for the standard model. SoundGuys and Tom’s Guide report up to five hours for the wireless-case configuration. Total listening time with the case is reported at about 20 to 22 hours. These are rated or reported maximums, not guaranteed real-world runtimes; volume, fit, features, and use can affect battery life.

That single-charge runtime makes the wireless-case model the more practical of the two for longer listening sessions, but even its stated maximum may not cover a full workday or long trip with ANC continuously on. Plan to recharge during extended use.
