A £917,785 VAT figure on a £2,442 invoice is a serious mismatch, but the two amounts alone cannot reveal its cause. Check the untouched CSV text, the parser’s settings and column mapping, and the supplier’s invoice line by line before changing records or deciding that the invoice itself is wrong.
What the amounts do—and don’t—tell you
The title does not establish whether £2,442 is the invoice’s net amount or VAT-inclusive gross total, which VAT rate applies, or whether a special VAT treatment is involved. So there is no basis to treat £917,785 as a confirmed tax calculation or identify a specific parser defect from those figures alone.

As an arithmetic check only, if £2,442 were net and the supply were standard-rated at 20%, VAT would be £488.40. If £2,442 were a gross amount inclusive of 20% VAT, its VAT portion would be £407. Those examples are not a determination of the correct VAT for this invoice.

- Preserve the original. Save an untouched copy of the CSV export before opening or re-saving it in spreadsheet software. Work from a duplicate so you can compare the parser’s output with the original.
- Inspect the literal CSV value. Find the VAT field in the raw text and note its punctuation, decimal and grouping marks, quotation marks, delimiter, currency symbol, whitespace and sign. The displayed value in an application may not match the characters in the file.
- Check the import configuration. Confirm that the parser uses the intended delimiter, character encoding and decimal convention, and that each field maps to the right column. Look for a number read from the wrong column, a text value interpreted as a number, or a transformation that multiplies or aggregates values unexpectedly. These are possibilities to check, not established causes in this case.
- Reconcile each invoice line. Compare the supplier’s line descriptions, VAT rates, net values and VAT amounts with the corresponding parsed fields. Then compare the recomputed totals with the invoice’s stated total VAT and gross amount. HMRC’s full VAT invoice checklist describes the invoice details to use in this check: VAT Notice 700.
- Compare the export with any spreadsheet view. If the CSV came from a spreadsheet, compare its literal text with the displayed cells. HMRC warns that spreadsheet software can reformat CSV data—for example, by dropping leading zeros or converting VAT registration numbers to scientific notation—and advises keeping a working spreadsheet copy and creating the CSV from that copy: Keeping records for VAT (Notice 700/21). That is a documented data-integrity risk, not proof that it caused this invoice’s figure.
What to do if the invoice itself is wrong
First determine whether the inflated figure exists only in your import or also on an issued VAT invoice. If the issued invoice contains too much VAT, HMRC Notice 700 explains that the supplier may need to account for the higher amount unless it is corrected with the customer using a credit note. Consult the current guidance before altering accounting records or contacting the customer: VAT Notice 700.

HMRC also states that the total VAT on a UK VAT invoice must be expressed in sterling, even when other invoice amounts are shown in a foreign currency. Use the notice’s rules for the relevant transaction rather than assuming a currency-formatting change alone explains the discrepancy.

A case-specific diagnosis requires the CSV itself, the parser settings or code, and the invoice breakdown. Without those, a decimal-convention error, delimiter or column mismatch, or unexpected arithmetic transformation remains a hypothesis. HMRC describes VAT invoices as capable of being paper or electronic documents in its COG941020 guidance; whichever form you received, compare the source invoice against the imported data rather than relying on the parsed total alone.
