The $20 difference is not a sound-quality upgrade. Both models use the same open-ear earbuds and the same core audio and noise-control features. It buys convenience and additional controls in the case-and-earbud package. If your charging setup already includes a Qi pad or Apple Watch charger, that convenience can justify the premium quickly; otherwise, the base model preserves the main experience for less money.
What AirPods 5 are
AirPods 5 are open-fit true-wireless earbuds. They rest at the entrance of the ear instead of forming a sealed tip inside the ear canal. Apple pairs that physical design with the H2 chip and microphones that support active noise processing, voice features and spatial audio.
Apple lists a custom high-excursion driver and a custom high-dynamic-range amplifier. The bass presentation favors control over spectacle. Kick drums and bass lines should remain defined instead of overwhelming vocals, but listeners seeking a forceful, club-like low end may prefer a sealed earbud that creates stronger physical isolation. AirPods 5’s open fit naturally reduces the sense of pressure and impact compared with a tightly sealed design.

Adaptive EQ is included on both AirPods 5 versions. Apple says it adjusts the tonal balance based on how the earbuds fit in your ears. Wearing both earbuds consistently and keeping their speaker openings clear gives the processing the best chance to work as intended.
How good is the ANC?

- Shared workspaces: The reduction can soften general room noise while preserving enough awareness to avoid feeling isolated.
- Travel and commuting: ANC is useful against portions of engine and road noise, although the open fit will not block the full range of a sealed earbud.
Where ANC has limits
- High-frequency sounds: Car horns and sharp noises can remain noticeable.
- Speech nearby: Conversations and indistinct voices may still cut through.

Transparency, Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness
Transparency mode is one of AirPods 5’s strongest practical features. Tom’s Guide found speech and notifications easy to hear while Transparency was active. Because the earbuds are already open-fit, the mode can sound natural: microphones add environmental audio while you continue listening to your own content.
Adaptive Audio blends ANC and Transparency rather than forcing you to choose one fixed mode. In a changing environment, that can reduce loud background sound without completely disconnecting you from announcements or people nearby. Conversation Awareness lowers or changes playback when you begin speaking, making a quick exchange less awkward than removing an earbud.
These modes are most useful when you move between places during the day. ANC can be appropriate while concentrating, Transparency can help when walking or listening for announcements, and Conversation Awareness can handle brief interactions. The earbuds’ open fit still means you may hear some of the environment even when ANC is selected.

The same openness reduces isolation. External sound can enter around the ear, and bass impact can feel lighter than with a sealed fit. Fit stability also depends on the shape of your ears; an open shell that feels secure to one person may need repositioning for another. Because no formal comfort or stability test is provided, treat the open-fit advantage as a design characteristic rather than a guarantee for every ear.

Choose AirPods 5 over AirPods 4 when sound and ANC matter
