AirPlay vs. Screen Mirroring on Samsung TVs: What’s the Difference?

AirPlay is Apple’s media-sharing feature and the route iPhone and iPad users use to mirror a screen. Samsung Galaxy phones use Smart View for whole-screen mirroring.

AirPlay and screen mirroring are not competing Samsung TV modes. AirPlay is Apple’s way to send selected media to a compatible Samsung TV—and the feature iPhone and iPad users use when they want to mirror their entire screen. “Screen mirroring” describes what appears on the TV. On a Samsung Galaxy phone, the equivalent whole-screen feature is called Smart View.

AirPlay vs. screen mirroring: the practical difference

What you want to do iPhone or iPad Samsung Galaxy phone
Show the whole device screen on the TV Open Control Center and choose Screen Mirroring; it uses AirPlay. Open Quick Settings and choose Smart View.
Send selected photos, video, or audio Choose the TV using AirPlay from Photos, a supported app, or an audio output control. Use the relevant app or available casting controls; the exact options depend on the app and TV.

Mirroring puts the device display on the television. Sending selected media is different: it directs a photo, video, or audio stream to the TV without necessarily showing the rest of the device screen. Samsung distinguishes app-level casting of specific content from mirroring the phone display. Some apps or services may restrict mirroring, so not every item will necessarily display.

  3. Open Control Center on the iPhone or iPad and tap Screen Mirroring.
  4. Select the Samsung TV from the device list.
  5. If the TV displays an AirPlay code, enter it on the Apple device.

Check compatibility by TV model, not year alone

Samsung’s compatibility guidance is not expressed identically across regions and support pages. Its US phone-connection page says Samsung Smart TVs released since 2018 support AirPlay. Samsung’s UK AirPlay page lists particular 2018–2021 QLED, UHD, Frame, Serif, Crystal UHD, projector, and Smart Monitor products, while another UK mirroring guide says AirPlay is available on Samsung TVs manufactured after 2019. Those statements do not establish that every TV from a given year is compatible.

Check the full model number against Samsung’s support page for your region. You can also look in the TV settings for Apple AirPlay Settings: Samsung says that if this item is absent from the TV’s Settings > General menu, the set is not supported. Menu locations can vary by model and software version.

If the TV does not appear or the connection fails

  • The TV is missing from the list: Confirm that the phone and TV share the same Wi-Fi network, then verify the model supports the feature you are trying to use.
  • AirPlay does not begin: Check that Apple AirPlay is enabled in the TV settings. Accept the connection on the TV or enter the displayed code if requested.
  • The connection still fails: Check the TV’s mirroring or connection permissions. Samsung also recommends restarting the phone and TV; if devices still cannot find one another, restart the router or app.
  • Wireless sharing is impractical: HDMI can be a fallback if the device supports video output through a compatible adapter. Samsung describes a separately sold USB-C-to-HDMI adapter option and cautions that it cannot guarantee the performance of third-party adapters for older devices. Match the adapter to the device’s port and confirm video-output support.
