Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Neither handwriting OCR nor human transcription is universally more accurate for old letters. In a 2026 benchmark, the best tested system came close to its human-created reference on 50 pages of legible early-19th-century administrative handwriting. That result is promising, but it is not a controlled demonstration that OCR beats expert transcribers across old letters. For a family letter or other important document, use machine output as a draft and check uncertain details against the image.
What does “more accurate” mean?
Accuracy scores compare a transcript with a reference transcript; they do not establish that the reference is perfect or that every meaningful detail is correct. Two common measures are character error rate (CER), which counts character-level differences, and word error rate (WER), which counts word-level differences. A low score can still conceal an error in a name, date, place, or number that matters greatly to a reader.

Human readings can be uncertain too, particularly when the writer’s letterforms or spelling are unfamiliar. The most useful check for an individual letter is therefore comparison with the source image, not treating either a machine result or a human transcript as unquestionable.
What published tests show
2026 benchmark: strong results on a narrow handwriting sample
In Reading the Archive by Machine: An OCR Benchmark for Historians, 1612–1921, published July 10, 2026, Jim Clifford, Jacob Polay, Jessica Jack, Mark Humphries, and Lianne C. Leddy compared six recognition systems with human-transcribed archival references. The handwriting subset comprised 50 pages of legible early-19th-century administrative documents, including Lower Canada and fur-trade-era clerical hands.

| System | Semantic CER | Semantic WER |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini 3.5 Flash | 1.52% | 3.79% |
| Infinity Parser 2 | 2.72% | 6.79% |
| Chandra 2 | 3.89% | 10.51% |
| olmOCR 2 | 5.34% | 11.76% |
| GLM-OCR | 7.98% | 15.89% |
These are benchmark authors’ machine-versus-reference scores on that specified corpus and evaluation protocol, not a direct contest between machines and expert human transcribers. The authors also report that a Gemini 3 Pro run on the same corpus achieved 0.91% CER. The benchmark is English-dominant and narrow in period, language, and difficulty; its gold transcription on the hardest pages is itself an interpretation. It also notes that systems may refuse, truncate, modernize spelling, or fabricate text. Do not treat these results as a forecast for a particular family letter.
2025 study: correction can substantially improve machine drafts
A 2025 Historical Methods study by Mark Humphries and co-authors tested large language models on a diverse corpus of 18th- and 19th-century English handwritten documents. Its abstract reports initial LLM transcription results of 5.7–7% CER and 8.9–15.9% WER. Correcting an LLM’s own output and conventional handwriting-recognition output achieved scores as low as 1.8% CER and 3.5% WER in the study’s corpus and method. The authors describe those corrected results as near-human levels; they are not a universal comparison for all old letters. Read the study in Historical Methods.

Why a machine can look right and still be wrong
Recognition tools can produce fluent text that hides an invented or modernized word. A plausible-looking result may be harder to catch than an obvious unreadable passage. The 2026 benchmark specifically tracks hallucinated words as a failure mode. Historical spellings, unfamiliar letter shapes, damaged pages, and obscured writing also make the tested results less transferable to a reader’s own document.
The purpose of the transcript matters as well. A rough search aid can tolerate more mistakes than a faithful quotation, family record, or historical argument. In either case, names, dates, places, numbers, and surprising phrases deserve attention beyond what an overall CER or WER score can tell you.

How to transcribe an old handwritten letter
- Start with a clear image of the whole letter. If available, enlarge uncertain areas while keeping the full page nearby for context.
- If you use handwriting OCR or HTR, label the result as a machine draft rather than a verified transcript.
- Check names, dates, places, numbers, and unexpected phrases against the image. Do not assume a fluent sentence is faithful.
- Compare uncertain letterforms with repeated examples elsewhere in the same letter. The U.S. National Archives advises: “Compare similar letters in the document to help confirm that you are reading the text correctly.” A long “s,” for example, can resemble an “f” in older writing; repeated forms and context can help distinguish them.
- Preserve the writer’s original capitalization, abbreviations, names, dates, misspellings, punctuation, and spelling when making a faithful transcript. Put interpretations or normalized spellings in a separate note.
- When a word cannot be read, mark it as “[illegible]” or use another explicit uncertainty convention. Do not silently substitute a plausible guess.
The U.S. National Archives transcription tips provide further guidance on copying what is visible and handling unreadable text.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which approach should you use?
| Approach | Useful when | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Human transcription | You need close attention to wording, context, and unusual details. | A person can also misread unfamiliar handwriting; verify uncertain readings against the image. |
| Handwriting OCR or HTR | You want a draft or search aid and the writing and image are suitable. | It may invent words, truncate text, or modernize spelling; do not infer accuracy for damaged or difficult pages from results on legible samples. |
| Hybrid workflow | You want machine assistance while preserving a check against the original. | Review the output, especially consequential details, and mark uncertainty instead of guessing. |
The reviewed studies do not establish a controlled, representative statistic for how much more accurate expert human transcription is than current OCR across all old letters. What they do show is that systems can perform very well on particular tested material, and that correction can improve drafts. For an individual letter, image quality, handwriting, historical spelling, and the cost of an error should guide how much checking you do.
