For Iceland walks on wet or uneven ground, choose waterproof hiking boots that fit comfortably and have a sole suited to varied terrain. Break them in before your trip, and match their height and weight to your actual route: a town stroll, a maintained path and a multi-day trek do not call for the same footwear. Ordinary hiking boots are not glacier-safety equipment.
Start with the walks you plan to do
There is no single boot that is right for every Iceland itinerary. Short walks around town or on maintained paths may not call for a heavy hiking boot; rocky, muddy or otherwise demanding trails place greater demands on water protection, grip and support. Choose for the longest or most challenging walk you genuinely plan to do, rather than packing for every possible terrain.

Conditions matter as much as the route name. The Icelandic Touring Association describes the Laugavegur trail as including rocky paths, snow-covered sections and river crossings. Its access guidance also notes that weather, snow and road openings affect when the route is accessible. Check the current information for your specific route before setting out: Icelandic Touring Association Laugavegur guidance.

What to look for in a boot
Fit that stays comfortable
A boot with useful features can still be a poor choice if it rubs or crowds your foot. Try it with the socks you expect to wear, then walk in it long enough to notice pressure, heel movement, toe crowding or rubbing. Visit Reykjanes advises hikers to choose boots that fit well and are worn in before a volcano hike: Visit Reykjanes volcano-hike preparation.

That guidance does not establish a universal size-up rule or a fixed break-in schedule. Let comfort during your own fitting and practice walks guide the decision.
Water protection and grip
For wet ground and varied trails, waterproof hiking boots with a robust, grippy sole are a sensible starting point. Visit Reykjavík recommends waterproof boots with a robust sole for traction on varied terrain, and the Icelandic Touring Association recommends sturdy waterproof boots for Laugavegur’s changing surfaces. See Visit Reykjavík’s hiking-gear advice.

These recommendations are not a guarantee that a particular tread will grip on ice. The cited guidance does not compare sole materials or certify any boot for icy surfaces. Choose footwear for the terrain you expect, and do not treat ordinary trail grip as a substitute for specialist equipment where it is required.

Ankle coverage, weight and stiffness
Visit Reykjavík recommends ankle support, which may be valuable on rougher terrain. A higher-cut boot is one way to get more coverage and structure, but it is not a universal requirement for every urban walk or maintained path. Consider the route, how the boot fits and whether its added stiffness and weight feel worthwhile for the distance you plan to cover.

Choose socks and test the combination
Visit Reykjavík recommends moisture-wicking and thermal socks with hiking boots. Bring a suitable pair and test the socks and boots together before travel; a comfortable boot can feel different when worn with another sock. The guidance does not specify a required material or thickness.
Glacier walks need separate safety equipment
A waterproof hiking boot does not make glacier travel safe. Iceland’s Environment Agency warns that walking on glacier tongues without crampons and other ice-climbing equipment is dangerous, and advises against glacier trips without the necessary experience and knowledge. It recommends organized trips with experienced guides as the safest option. Follow the guide’s activity-specific equipment requirements rather than relying on ordinary walking boots: Icelandic Environment Agency traveler safety guidance.

Check conditions before setting out
Iceland’s weather can change, and footwear cannot make an inaccessible or unsafe route suitable. The Environment Agency advises travelers to check weather and local conditions. For trekking, Ferðafélag Íslands also emphasizes Iceland’s weather and wind, along with navigation and wind- and waterproof clothing as basic items: Ferðafélag Íslands general packing guidance. Recheck conditions close to departure, especially for routes affected by snow or road openings.
