Unlike a simple upright steam mop, its hose, wands, nozzle and interchangeable brushes are designed to direct steam at different surfaces. Airflo and retailers describe it for kitchens, bathrooms, toilets, hard floors, windows, carpets, upholstery, clothing and curtains.

A machine that is excellent at loosening grout residue can still be slow or ineffective on a large, heavily soiled floor.

Discontinuation changes the ownership calculation. A new unit with a current warranty, documented consumables and readily available seals is easier to justify than an older AFS518W bought sight unseen. Existing listings can remain online after production ends, and a seller may describe an old item as “new” without providing meaningful manufacturer support. Ask for the serial or model label, a demonstration that steam is produced, and a complete accessory inventory before paying.

Where it performs best
Grout, tile edges and bathroom fittings
Detail work is the AFS518W’s strongest case. A ProductReview.com.au owner wrote, “Cleans tile grout beautifully.” Concentrated steam from the nozzle or a round brush can soften soap residue and loosen grime in lines that are awkward to scrub by hand. The same approach suits tile edges, taps, shower tracks, toilet hinges and narrow joins.
Work in short sections. Hold the nozzle close enough to loosen soil, then wipe the released residue with a clean cloth rather than allowing dirty water to dry back onto the tile. Change or rinse the cloth frequently; otherwise the steamer can redistribute the dirt.

The window brush and cloth are appropriate for glass panels and windows. Steam can loosen fingerprints and film, while the cloth collects moisture. Use a controlled pass and finish with a dry, lint-free cloth if you need a clear surface. Do not assume that every frame, seal or coating is steam-safe; test an inconspicuous area and keep the jet away from electrical components and unsealed joints.

Laminate cupboards and narrow grooves
Owner reports mention laminated cupboards, glass panels and hard-to-reach grooves as successful applications. These are short, controlled tasks where the AFS518W’s hose and small brushes provide more reach than a broad mop head. Keep dwell time brief on laminate, veneered wood, painted surfaces and adhesive-backed edging because heat and moisture can damage finishes or lift edges.
Ovens, mould and heavy deposits
Expectations should be lower for baked-on oven soil and mould. ProductReview.com.au reports include owners who found weak results on heavily dirty ovens or mould. Steam may soften contamination, but it does not replace mechanical scrubbing, a suitable cleaner where safe, or mould remediation. Never direct a hot jet into insulation, controls, vents or electrical components.
Why large floors are a weaker match
The AFS518W’s 1.2-litre tank and 4.5-bar headline pressure do not tell you how much floor area can be cleaned continuously. The floor head has to cover a broad surface, and steam output can cycle as the boiler restores pressure. One owner described roughly two minutes of work followed by about 30 seconds of reheating, and said floors took about three times longer than conventional mopping. Another report estimated only about 1.5 square metres of floor cleaning before the available steam was exhausted.
These are old, self-reported experiences rather than laboratory measurements, and the small ProductReview.com.au sample should be treated as directional. They nevertheless identify the relevant trade-off: concentrated pressure and many tools are more valuable for detail jobs than for moving quickly across an entire home. A floor-mop attachment was also reported to disengage during use, so check the locking mechanism carefully on any used unit.

Owner experience and reliability signals
ProductReview.com.au shows 2.7 out of 5 from six reviews on its 2026 page. The reviews were posted roughly 11 to 14 years earlier, so this is not a current reliability study. It is best read as a list of possible ownership outcomes rather than a statistical failure rate.
Positive themes
- Grout, tiles, laminated cupboards, windows, glass panels, bathroom fixtures and grooves were repeatedly identified as useful targets.
- One reviewer considered approximately 3.5-bar pressure effective for heavy spot work.
- The accessory range allows one canister to handle detail, window and floor-related tasks without buying separate machines.
Negative themes
- Noise and slow progress were common complaints; one owner summarized the experience as “Lots of noise but not a lot of cleaning action!”
- Steam output or indicator failures were reported, along with broken parts.
- A floor attachment reportedly disengaged during cleaning.
- Some owners were dissatisfied with warranty or parts handling.
- Heavy oven soil and mould were not consistently removed.
Because these reports are old and few, they cannot establish how every AFS518W will behave today. They do justify testing the exact unit, not relying on a stock photograph or a seller’s statement that it “works.”
Safe operating procedure
Use the manual’s limits as non-negotiable. It states: Do not operate machine without water in the tank.
It also states: Do not direct steam at people, animals or at electrical devices.
The tank limit is 1200 ml; do not overfill. The manual cautions against tilting the machine more than 45 degrees while it is switched on or still producing steam, and says the appliance is for household use and should not run unattended.

- Inspect before filling. Check the power cord, plug, hose, tank cap, seals, wands and floor-head locks. Do not use a unit with damaged insulation, cracked plastic or a leaking tank.
- Measure the water. Use the supplied measuring cup if available and stay at or below the 1200 ml maximum. Do not add chemicals unless the model’s instructions explicitly permit them.
- Assemble the correct tool. Use the high-pressure nozzle or round brush for grout and grooves, the window brush for glass, and the floor/carpet tool for appropriate floor work. Snap both extension wands fully into place where needed.
- Prepare the surface. Vacuum or wipe loose grit first. Test steam on a hidden area of painted, laminated, sealed, adhesive-backed or otherwise delicate material.
- Keep the machine upright. Do not exceed the manual’s 45-degree tilt limit while powered or emitting steam. Keep the appliance where it cannot be pulled down by the hose.
- Work in short passes. Direct steam at the soil, then wipe immediately with the cloth. Avoid holding the jet on one spot, especially on wood, laminate, painted surfaces, grout sealers and plastic.
- Stop safely. Switch off, unplug and allow the unit to cool before opening the tank, changing attachments or storing it. Never leave it running unattended.
- Store dry. Empty remaining water, allow the tank and accessories to dry, and keep the cloth clean. Follow the manual’s descaling and seal-care instructions if supplied with your unit.
Replacement steam pads and parts
Appliances Online retains a specification page where a customer asked where to buy new steam pads. The response directed the customer to Airflo Distributors’ spare-parts division. That referral does not prove that pads are currently in stock, interchangeable across production batches or available in every region.

Before buying an AFS518W, contact the spare-parts channel with the exact model designation and ask for written confirmation of:
- the correct replacement steam-pad part number;
- current stock and dispatch location;
- compatibility with your floor-head version;
- the availability of seals, cloths, caps and attachment locks; and
- return terms if the supplied pad does not fit.
Do not assume a generic pad is safe merely because its dimensions look similar. A loose pad can detach, expose a hot surface or change how moisture is distributed. If no compatible pad can be sourced, the floor attachment’s practical value is substantially reduced, although the nozzle and detail brushes may still be usable.

Since the model is discontinued, condition matters more than a small difference in asking price. Request a photo of the model label and every accessory, then ask the seller to demonstrate steam production. A sensible inspection includes:
- steam emerging consistently from the nozzle after warm-up;
- no water leaking from the tank, hose or connectors;
- an intact pressure or steam indicator;
- both extension wands locking without excessive play;
- the floor attachment remaining engaged when pulled gently;
- a power cord and plug without cuts, exposed conductors or heat damage; and
- a tank interior free from severe cracking, scale or an unexplained smell.
Price the machine as an appliance with uncertain support, not as a current retail product. CHOICE’s A$199 figure is a historical listing, while current used prices, shipping and replacement-part costs vary by seller and location. A cheap purchase is not economical if a missing floor head, failed seal or unavailable pad makes the machine unsuitable for your intended work.

How to compare it with a current steam cleaner
If you are not committed to the AFS518W, compare a supported current model on the characteristics that affect your work rather than on bar pressure alone:

- the complete nozzle, brush, wand and floor-tool set is included; and
- you have confirmed a source for compatible pads and seals.
Choose a supported alternative if:
- you need to clean several rooms of hard floor quickly;
- you require predictable warranty coverage;
- you cannot test the used appliance before purchase;
- replacement pads or attachments are unavailable; or
- you expect steam alone to remove baked-on oven soil, mould or deep carpet staining.
Bottom line on the Airflo Multi Steamer AFS518W
The AFS518W is best understood as an older detail-cleaning canister with a useful accessory set, not as a high-throughput floor machine. Its 4.5-bar, 1,500-W specification and 1.2-litre tank look capable on paper, while owner evidence points to the practical limits: noise, interrupted steam, attachment problems and uncertain longevity. Because production has ended, verify the exact unit and replacement-pad path before spending money. If those checks pass and your jobs are mostly grout, tiles, glass and fixtures, it can still be a rational used purchase; otherwise, a currently supported cleaner is the safer investment.
